Combine fire stopped in the field

Ойын-сауық

No one was hurt. We thought had roller bearings on the center draper belt fail. It wqs actually a chain throwing sparks. My header lit on fire while I was cutting wheat. The video starts after most of the fire is mostly contained. We got it under control and I drove it to the river to wait on the volunteer fire brigade. No GoPro that day, so it's not the best quality.

Some of us carry water on the combine for just such an emergency. I have seen a couple of combines with 50 gallon tanks and enough hose to reach all the way around the machine.

Half a million dollar combine, a 10,000 dollar water trailer is just a drop in the bucket for the difference of saving or loosing.

Damn, that was intense and scary. We had an 8120 completely destroyed by fire, now we have a tender trailer with a sludge pump at the ready at all times. Fire extinguishers are not enough for any type of combine fire. Just when you think you got it, it comes back and is too late by then.

Lucky we mainly grow grain sorghum/milo, corn, and cotton. We are more worried about cotton pickers catching on fire, and we always have water fir the pickers, but all farm machinery can go up fast.

If you have a header and feeder house fire the first thing you do is take the header off.

We like to live dangerously here in the States... Just kidding. I have seen combines burn up even after the trucks got there. Heavy with water he got stuck in the field before he got to the machine. Local county unit had to wait on another truck but it was too late.

This is the reason I carry a cordless battery powered leaf blower on my combine,at least once a day I blow off the header and feeder house and two fire extinguishers.

Belts, bearings and things can cause a spark at any time and place and any dry buildup will only take seconds to blaze up! Hopefully nothing was ruined and you fellas will be up and running soon!

@@TrevorStruthers Is there a reason to drop them quickly in normal operations? I would expect the cylinder that raises them to have an outflow restrictor ("leaky one-way valve") directly on the port, so that its lowering speed is limited and I wonder whether I'm missing something that would make that infeasible of ineffective.

@@robertobryk4989 You can adjust the speed at which they go up and down. They can go down as fast or faster than free fall if you want. I do a lot of tapping on the inputs, not really holding it cause when you hold the button, the header drops out fast.
