Combat Boots or Sneakers? Modern Operational Footwear

bonetactical.com/
Times have changed considerably since the days when jungle combat boots were a viable option as effective operational footwear. The more we begin to operate in densely populated areas and shoe design/production technologies increase, we start to see the best shoes for the job looking more like sneakers and less like boots. Tactical athletes are also become more athletic, and a good pair of shoes can really help increase performance. Greg Tambone takes you through the the line-up of his favorite footwear for serious missions, and he shares what you should look for in your next pair along the way as well.

You can have the best shoes in the world but if you aren’t rocking high quality wool socks with them you’re gonna pay the price! Rain or shine, wet or dry, hot or cold - wool socks always.

I’ve worked in the footwear industry for over 12 years, specially work boots, and most of what you said is accurate. You’re definitely more knowledgeable than the average person. There is a lot of junk and marketing gimmicks in the footwear industry. There’s a lot factors to consider when picking out a good boot and not necessarily brand specific. PS: Try 5-star glue with activator to fix your favorite boots. IMO, that stuff is superior to shoe goo.

Bone Tactical, hope you didn’t take offense, What I said was a compliment. The human foot is complicated and there’s so many things to consider for each individual. Arch height, arch length, pronation, supination, etc.. Flexible soles are better for some and rigid soles are better for others. Arch supports/insoles depend on the individuals arch type. There’s many more things to consider, I could go on for a while. Again, what you said is mostly accurate. You get to do the cool stuff, I’m just an Al Bundy.

What I look for in a rugged outdoor shoe is the stealth/rock-climbing sticky rubber, but also stitching all around, from the rubber toes guards to the soles themselves. I don't trust glue; as soon as you get a shoe wet, it begins to fall apart, regardless of the supposedly quality. Clip rocks a couple times with a rubber toe that's secured only by glue, and inevitably it's going to start peeling back. Once that happens, moisture is going to keep seeping in and it's pretty much game over from there. Also, mid-height is preferred over low cut -- the latter just allows too much debris to slip inside.

  • @BoneTactical

    @BoneTactical

I agree, but hard to find stitched to boxes. I usually have to stitch shoes like that myself or by several pairs and switch them out as they wear and-or use shoe goo

My experience working in law enforcement and as a fireman. Bates were my favorite because of my wide feet, they were so comfortable/light for all day wear. 5.11s were crap and got destroyed after a few months of any heavy use, Rockies were definitely imo too heavy. Merrells hiking shoes are great and lightweight for everyday wear. Also are more low profile. Now that I’m getting into private security, merrells is my choice. Never wore asics, but one of my best friends who served several combat tours in Afghanistan, and is now a patrolman swears by that brand, said it was worth every cent.

Ethan Stang worth $3.60? Vs. two days work? Let me impart some knowledge in you young man. If they cost $360 new, the first time your neighbor put them on they depreciated 50%, this rule applies to about everything but gold and guns. So if the first time he wore them, they became worth $180, then he wore them until they became visibly worn and therefore depreciated at least another 50%. They were then worth maybe $90 a year ago to someone who REALLY wants them. At the point they became damaged they became virtually worthless in the US. Goodwill would not accept them as a donation because they couldn’t sell them for $5, you paid with two days work? What’s your time worth, $1 a day? Your neighbor is taking advantage of you young man I hope you learn to be assertive!

For regular street wear, minimalist zero drop. I wear a cheap knockoff of vivobarefoot, add super light rigid inotec insoles, to make anything sharp on the ground less of an issue. It feels like running in a low top cleat on a turf field. The low fulcrum point makes rolling an ankle very unlikely. There's a few brands that go into this category, the cheap knockoff is Whitin, then there's the legit Vivos, Groundies, Merrell, a few others. They hurt at first, then your calves get bigger, feet get tougher.

Glad you did this video, nice to see a little bit of your perspective on footwear. Been wearing boots for most part for last several years. I tried Original SWAT, Bates, Rocky, Garmont, Belleville, GoRuck, Viktos and Salomon etc. If I had to rate the boots I like the most that I own presently: 1: GoRuck MACV-1 (gen 1), 2. Viktos 8 inch - Strife Warfighter Boots (discontinued) and 3: Salomon Quest 4D Forces Boots and Salomon XA Forces Mid. The GoRuck MACV-1 (gen 1) they're versatile, I can wear it working out, work and get away with it in a suit if need be, if clean them up and they have the best out the box insoles that I have seen from any footwear and the wide toe box makes keeps my toes happy, they just can be slippy in wet conditions, the gen 2 supposely aimed to fix this problem with different insole pattern. Viktos Strife good insoles they hold up and last, and has a wide toe box, also can be slippy in wet conditions not a real issue for me when comes to those boots. The Salmons for me, they rub the sides of my toes on both sides.......eventually I had squatted, bent, kicked, slided and submerged them so much they broken in better in the "toe box department", insoles out the box doesnt work for me. Prefer the Salomon Quest 4D Forces Boots most of time over Salomon XA Forces Mid. The Quest 4D just fit my feet better. Not planning to buying anymore Salmons once they unserviceable off to the graveyard. Either way their tools. Just my some my experiences with the boots. Greg I suggest you take a look what GoRuck has to offer in the footwear department (They have coyote boots) , if you have a problem with their gear they will take care of you and actually listen to criticism and keep their word. That hard come back. Also if you look for some insoles/Orthotics that will hold up and last. Try looking up D3O insoles. D3O being the material. They may suit your uses/needs. I would be interested to see your thoughts on it. Hope the Lowa boots that are coming work out for you. I love to see review. Sorry for the long rant. -AJ

I spent a long time in the ARMY and used all kinds of boots. They are not that great. Recently I found a shoe company that makes activewear shoes and they are incredible. They fit the role of "sneakers" or "tennis shoes". The company is ON and I've bought three pairs already for different applications. They don't need any "break-in" period and are extremely light and hands down the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. I use them at the gym for core and x-fit training, the range, the field, and for everyday use. They have waterproof versions and not, tons to choose from. I highly recommend these shoes. I wouldn't use these for serious work shoes, construction sites, when lifting heavy stuff you might drop, mechanics, mud, etc. They are the perfect shoe for urban use.

I bought a pair of coyote brown Bates Cobra 8 boots which have the tough leather, quick-dry fabric upper, ventilation holes on both sides and incredibly lightweight for its size (you can flex the boot without issue). I bought them for their good fit and comfort, they have a leather heel cup and they seem suitable for outdoor use. My worry is how durable would the sole be if I were to use it for hiking the PCT or the Sierras.

I bought a pair of real army boots. But I have a curvature in my legs that makes them really hard to walk in. Because the ankles are locked straight. I'm guessing it's to prevent twisting your ankle. They cramp up muscles I never knew existed. Someone needs to make a nice tactical shoe. Make teflon layered, puncture/ small arm Bullet proof, gell layer the entire inside. Not just the sole. Forge steel toed. With Ankle stabilizing design that hinders 60% of the movement of the ankles instead of locking them strait. 40% movement would be comfortable and still save your ankle.

They’re average at best. Had to wear them back in the day and hated them. If you like Bates (which are really trash) you’ll love danners. If you want to go top tier get lowas. I’ll do a two year review on my lowas soon. They’re insanely BA

  • @Ciph4n

I loved Lowas but I can no longer justify the price of their footwear. I have recently bought Salomon trail shoes and experienced the stiffness and slight narrow footbed, but I work them by hand flexing and save them only for trail hiking, rocks, gravel, mud. I can attest that the stiffness with the pathfinder shoe was awesome to have in those scenarios. Everyday wear and walking they are awful 😆. By far my most fav boot is timberland mt madsen, just a little to hot for summer weather as they are all leather upper

Bone Tactical nice! Do a review, there isn’t much on KZread about these. The owner of the company did an interview about a year ago and mentioned they are their lightest weight shoe and more geared toward an urban environment and are probably good for light to medium use. You’ll probably put them through the ringer, but if they’re comfortable they’re worth getting and just replacing as need be. They’re not cheap, so hopefully the quality is there. Great channel btw, keep it up!!
