L tried to get Light off balance by being in his face with his weird sitting habits and just telling him he's L. Personally I think he was working too hard and not smart enough. Having someone like Matsuda butter Light up until he confessed (as happens with lots of real life serial killers), or Columbo quietly getting under his skin slowly might have yielded better results.

@@nyxeo It's also the fact that L and Light both desired a total victory over the other. It was a game. They made sometimes inefficient plans for the sake of keeping the gane going. Part of why Light lost to Near is because he still saw it as some kind of game, but Near wasn't playing. Columbo would pick Light apart in days if not hours.

Hot take: Columbo would have had better success than L at catching Light. Now, I'm not just saying this because Columbo is the greatest detective ever. Columbo's whole shtick is that he's a master of catching people who are (supposedly) smarter than him, feeding their egos and acting like a bumbling fool. This would honestly be the _perfect_ strategy against Light, someone who's so cocksure and so obsessed with defeating his intellectual equals, that he'd completely overlook the Lieutenant until the last second- and by then it'll be too late.

I can also picture Columbo trolling Light by coming up with the theory that Shinigamis don't exist, explain the murders in a more mundane way and still show him he's his prime suspect. Seeing a bumbling detective actually closing in on him for the wrong reasons would drive Light insane and end up confessing everything to prove shinigamis are real to Columbo whose only reaction would be a quiet smile before saying "Oh, and just one more thing..."

I'm willing to give Light more credit than that. He is a self-righteous, egotistical, sanctimonious asshole. But, he has shown an ability to maintain composure under fire and he is a good reader of people. I don't think he would fall as easily as most of Columbo's usual suspects. He has shown the ability to maintain his cool and he is not quick to show his anger. He is also able to needle others for information himself. I don't think he'd get everything out of Columbo, but he might get something. He would at the very least give him some trouble, however Columbo's tactics would successfully allow him to have virtually free reign of Light's personal life and usual haunts. It would allow him to set up moves of his own, either preempting Light's moves (kind of like how L did early on) or readying attacks and counters in response. I think the real scary thing is that Light would underestimate Columbo (especially in their first and maybe second meeting), leading to Columbo making moves Light either fails to predict, or more disastrously, fails to understand.

There are two interpretations: Colombo can see Ryuk, because he's a mythical being of immense power. Colombo can't see Ryuk, but pretends to because he's onto Light and wants him to slip up. I don't know which one is better.

Then at the finale before Light is arrested, he manages to discover Columbo's name on some paperwork at his desk. Light, wanting to brag and ensure Columbo knew it was him who killed him, writes down that the lieutenant will have a heart attack shortly after Light has given his speech. Columbo then goes to Light to explain his case, how he suspected Light from the very beginning, but he couldn't understand how Light was doing it. Light, of course, begins to laugh maniacally, going into one of his "divine" monologues about his justice, and finally explaining how a normal mortal like Columbo could never understand how a god like Light operates. Columbo asks to be enlightened, and Light obliges since Columbo is a dead man anyway. Light explains that he's found Columbo's real name and that he's already written it onto his Death Note; Columbo will die within seconds after Light's speech. Columbo politely corrects Light about a few things. He suspected that Light was involved somehow, he just didn't understand how. It was only after a bit of research and conversations with Light that he began opening up to the idea that something bigger than "Earthly machinations" were going on, something that a "simple mortal" like himself could never understand. He investigated Light, found the drawer with the Death Note, and since he knew Light was so smart, Columbo took the drawer to people "smarter than himself" to make sure there were no traps. He reveals that the note book Light is using right now is not the same, and the paperwork at his desk was "unfortunately a typo" that Columbo has been meaning to get fixed. With the instructions written within the book, combined with Light's confession, more than enough has been filled in for the Detective. Other police officers file in, showing that Columbo planned his "death" the entire time. This was just another confession from an arrogant criminal.

Its underrated how fucking powerful the line, "Oh, you can just call me Detective" is. He KNOWS Light is furiously trying to scribble his name in the Death Note and is openly fucking with him over it.

Honestly Death Note does work very well in the trappings of a Columbo episode. The story opens on the Killer, exploring his motivations and giving away exactly how he carried out the murder. Then the detective enter 1/4 of the way in and we see him slowly put all the pieces together from the killers point of view as the noose slowly tightens.

Colombo himself is a Shinigami-like being. Rather than the Death Note, he possesses the Detective Note. Instead of ensuring people’s death, it is capable of ensuring people’s conviction.

Had to watch a few episodes of Columbo to find out and yeah he's exactly like this. He's literally the investigative embodiment of "nothing personal kid". One of the episodes has him getting the criminal to convict himself by identifying the camera that his wife's last moment was taken with. Great stuff.

I really want to see a show where it’s just Columbo in random settings that aren’t his own, and he’s just there, he’s just Columbo but in that universe, and somehow, he fixes all the problems in 1 episode that the series he crossed over into took their entire span to fix (ie outing Palpatine, figuring out who’s doing all the Death Note killings, getting the One Ring to Mordor, etc)

Columbo didn't guess what Light's father's occupation was. He did the same thing as L, deduced the person most likely to have access to the names and faces of a criminal database, figured it was Light by the personality you'd most likely have if you're referencing spirits of the dead, and used the tip they (Kira) dropped in writing to discern it was him. From there, him actually touching the Note would've been a formality, he already found Light and guessing a spirit of death looks *gangly* only *sounds* like he's describing Ryuk... but that description could apply to almost anything reasonably spooky. The dialogue is vague enough you can't tell if Columbo cold read Light and is bluffing him or if he used sleight of hand to touch the note. Either way, this isn't a conversation he'd have unless he had Light dead to rights. Good stuff.

Pay attention, he's gonna say the "one more thing" line !" And he did and I was like "Granny, how do you predict this stuff ?". I thought she saw it before, but she claimed not to. And I believe her now, it's just the way it goes.

In the manga if you misspelled or otherwise messed up a person's name three times, it would become impossible to ever kill said person with the death note, to prevent users without the eyes from just guessing. Columbo is now, even more than before, unkillable.

Yes, I was mistaken, it is four times not three, going along with the Japanese superstition about the number four being linked to death because they phonetically sound similar in the Japanese Language. That's why it's death after 40 seconds, details surrounding the death need to be written before 6 minutes 40 seconds (400 seconds) etc. Kinda mad I messed that up honestly.

All this awesome Columbo-posting inspired me to look up the real thing, so I just watched the 1968 film "Prescription: Murder". I went into it skeptical since maybe the memes had blown him out of proportion a bit, or maybe his debut wasn't quite as smooth and it took him a few appearances to really hit his stride, but I gotta say, right from day one, Columbo was a mesmerizing master, just brilliantly done! Thanks so much for turning me onto him. Oh, and, just one more thing... your impressions are just impeccable.

It started as a 1962 stage play, so they had nearly 6 years to get the characterization down before they made "Prescription: Murder."

Strong enough that he refused to let Light out of his sight until either he found conclusive evidence he was Kira or conclusive evidence he wasn’t.

It's honestly kind of comical how hard Light's plan would have failed if Misa was more of a wildcard, or L knew about the ability to write on torn pages, or anything like that.

In all the series he never gives out his first name. There was a scene in a later season where someone was yelling at him and asks for his first name and he replied “lieutenant”.

@@benjaminoechsli1941 I *think* the way it works is that, unless you are currently the 'owner' of a Death Note, *then* you can consistently see a Shinigami HOWEVER, if you are *not* the 'owner' of a Death Note (like when Light gave it up in prison), then you lose the ability to see Shinigami, and in the case of former 'owners', you lose any memories Death Note once you let go of it

The link would be drawn, the cameras that line Japanese streets might be able to show that Light met up with Naomi and that someone with his clothing style, height, and build was at the train station where Raye met his end. Interpol and the FBI would have caught Light so fast that he would not even be able to make it to episode ten. He would be fucking done. Hell, L wasn't stupid and could have made the connection. He already knew Kira's general location, age range, and occupation (student). All he would have had to do is call up Soichiro Yagami and say "Hey! I want to search your house!" And, Light's father would do nothing due to his commitment to justice. L could even make it a surprise visit or time it while Light is busy attending school. He would likely find Light's notebook storage compartment and learn how to open it. Then, his desire for 100% proof of Light's guilt would be satisfied and our friendly neighborhood walking psychotic God-complex goes in the can and either dies when he needs to, or Ryuk kills him. Case closed. Honestly, if they really tried their hardest, Raye and Naomi might not have died.

I don't know if that works. I think the Death Note needs your original name, the one you were given at birth. So you can't change your name and be safe from it.

@@Manudyne I always wondered that. Say you legally change your name and go by that name and very few people know your birth name. I'd say you're pretty safe from a death note as long as whoever owns the note doesn't have shinigami eyes.

For those complaining about plotholes, there are 4 methods we can theorise about as to why Columbo noticed Ryuk: 1. Columbo's secret origin is that he actually started out much like Light, but has since renounced the Death Note 2. Columbo sneakily touched the Death Note's pages when Light was distracted 3. Columbo cannot see Ryuk, but has gotten a physical description of Shinigami and so is bluffing to get a reaction out of Light 4. He's Columbo

knowing Columbo he was able to talk to that guy Light kills by spooking him with Ryuk on the bus and got the description there. Or some other policeman did and jokingly told the description to Columbo

The line "righteous violence" popping out of nowhere really gets me for some reason

"Oh I came over here to Japan because my wife wanted to visit now that I'm finally retired. However I don't like flying, but a fella I helped out some years back offered to get me a trip by sea. The best part about taking the boat, er... ship... oh I can never tell which is the right word to use. Anyways the best part is I got to bring my car too, no charge. But wouldntyouknowit just before we were going to go she gets sick. However she insisted that I go and take a proper vacation for once in my life. Well anyways while I'm here taking in the sights I bump into Naomi Misora and her husband. Small world, I worked with her briefly in Las Angeles when I was the local liaison with the FBI. Well apparently her husband was working on that Kira case then the next day his bus gets hijacked and the day after he winds up dead. Now that really got my attention, I went to find Naomi because I feared for her safety. Wouldn't you know it I find her just outside the police station walking like she was in a trance. I tried to get her to come with me and answer a few questions, but the more I tried to stop her from going wherever she was going the more stressed she got. Then bam she has a heart attack right in front of me.... I feel I owe it to her and her late husband to solve this Kira case for them."

Now I don't know how the Japanese do it, but over in Los Angeles, when a fella robs a bank he likes to go to ground for a while, figure out what to do with the score. Mrs. Columbo has a whole list of things to do if I ever come into a windfall like that! It might take me two whole weeks just to sort out which part of the house to get fixed first! So how come a guy who comes into that kind of cash, and blows three people away in the process, finds himself holding up the very bus and FBI agent visiting Japan on a murder case is riding on? Talk about bad luck for Mister Osoreda! To try and get a ransom score like that, a smart fella, a fella so smart he ain't worried about the police or anybody catching up to him during this kinda heist, I gotta figure he had a partner on the bus, make sure everything went ok. I looked into the passengers the driver remembered from that day and there was Ray, some high school girl and...well what do you know! It completely slipped my mind but, well you were on the bus too weren't you?"

@@dragonfell5078 well if I was going to write a death note columbo story. The way I see it, if there is anyone who could defeat the death note, it's columbo. Especially if it got in the way of him asking someone some questions. Like many of his cases where he actually saves the victim just in the nick of time. I think he would preform CPR or get ahold of one of those public AEDs to keep the blood pumping long enough to find out what happens if a victim of the death note gets a heart transplant. That's why I put the "her and her late husband." In that sly way he tells the truth to the killer without them even knowing.

"Oh, and one more thing, Ms. Amane. Your eyes are red and yellow all over. Might wanna get that checked out."

I love the ending’s implications. Either Columbo is bluffing, but knows what a Shinigami looks like (at least roughly enough to give enough credence to his question), or he can actually see Ryuk, which has a whole level of questions and implications.

Honestly I think Colmbo could totally defeat Light. He thrives off of luring in Arrogant suspects and making them slip. However,I think the supernatural nature would definitely throw him for a curve atleast initially.

Whats hilarious is immediately after watching this short, i was flipping through the channels and saw the tail end of a columbo episode, man you got the mannerisms down perfectly

Columbo would mispronounce Ryuk's name on purpose so Light would incriminate himself
