In 2014, Jim Foley was kidnapped by ISIS while reporting on the conflict in Syria as a journalist.
He was held hostage and tortured for almost two years before he was executed.
A photo of Jim taken in a bunker circulated after his kidnapping. The photo showed him reading one of Irish writer Colum McCann's novels. Jim would retell the story in that book to his fellow hostages while in captivity.
After Colum saw that photo, he contacted Jim's mother, Diane Foley.
Together, Colum and Diane worked to tell the story of Jim's life and how it was worth much more than its awful end.
