Hi there, Liron here!
Today I want to share with you a quick tip & painting process that I think will help many watercolor painters (and painters in general perhaps?).
🎨USING PURE COLOR 🎨
This is a topic I covered in several past videos. This time I wanted to BETTER DEMONSTRATE IT.
In this video I demonstrate how using pure colors, and multiple colors can help achieve a more wholesome and interesting result.
🎨DRAWING, VALUES & COLOR 🎨
I'm a big proponent of the drawing + values idea, and that colors are secondary.
With that being said, sometimes even when I get the values and drawing correctly, something is missing.
I find that if I not all three primaries are clearly present, something's missing.
Sometimes it's also true for green.
Including all four in my opinion leads to a very interesting result.
🎨CONCLUSION 🎨
I hope this video helps you, or inspires you to try a different approach.
Also, I cannot stress enough how important DRAWING is.
A quality drawing is hard to mess up with paint.
I highly recommend you check out my beginner's drawing course here:
bit.ly/2Gn4rOIDrawYT
And I'll talk to you again real soon (:

This is beautiful!! How do you decide what color goes where in a painting like this?
@LironYan
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you ^_^ Very spontaneously (: I tend to use lots of yellows where I know it will stay light, because yellow is generally lighter. I then vary it with red, usually. Blue tends to be darker (and red too sometimes), so I'll use these where the shadows are. So that means blue, purple and green shadows (all the mixes of blue + red / yellow). And sometimes I'll throw all of that out the window and just improvise! Give it a try (;

@@LironYan bruh, my art has changed so much just from this TINY piece of information. I can't even compare it to anything prior because I've never done watercolor but holy crap you TAUGHT MEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah! A Yancosky palette with light, bright colors. Cool. Drawing, values then colors. Something that Stan Miller stresses.
I LOVE watercolor paintings on old architecture and old cars! I have a photo of an old car in our rural driveway,covered in ice that I really want to paint. The car is in several old rusty colors so it will be fun to paint!
Thank you for your kind reply. I only heard about this type of brush yesterday for the first time, and it's great to see it in action when you use it. Your punchy and clear style of painting has caused me to put down other mediums and take out my watercolours again. I love the way you do not overwork your colours but leave the brightness of the paper to pop through.

Wow thank you so much! 😊🙏🏼 It’s so hard for me to “see” my own style, so that actually helps a lot!
Just was looking back through some of my 2017 screen shots and there you were. I love your art instruction, Liron!!!
The graduation using analogous colors was delightful and made the painting have a lot of liveliness. Terrific!

You are so right! It is beautiful!! I agree that color is fascinating and I would love to see more about it! Thank you!!!
The right values are what makes this look so good. As always, color doesn't matter as long as the values are right. And yes I still struggle with it. Thanks Liron !

My pleasure, thank you 🙏🏼😊 I have trouble with the mid-values usually. I tend to go dark shadows and light highlights, without enough in-between.

Great Video Liron as usual. I like your explanation on how you decide to choose your colors which I must say fascinates me. Love your negative painting and the way you treat highlights. You like to keep your colors to bleed in one another. Well what I can add more. It is simply great.

Bingo! You are so right! Very well shown. I will say, though, that I find mother nature to have more interesting and more abundant colors than anything man-made... of course I'm including people and animals but its true of land/sea/sky scapes also. I do enjoy painting things (for lack of a better word) but mama nature has them beat for colors.
@LironYan

I get it, and I agree! But I would also say this one has a bit of mother nature, the rust is a naturally occurring phenomenon (; Haha! But in any case, I really need to train myself in seeing the different colors of nature, because for some reason they are easier for me to see in these types of objects. Thank you ^_^
Haha, well your subject didn't look promising, but you produced something unexpected with your use of color. I totally get what you say about the primaries. They should really all be there in some way, because they appear in life! I just got a new little set of paints for my holiday, and I shall use them on our 12 hour flight!

Flights are a great time to paint and draw (; And yes! Almost any subject can be made interesting, as long as you have a vision. I easily see beauty in mechanical objects with lots of straight lines, for some reason. Thank you ^_^

@@LironYan your brain likely has engineering/ architectural design abilities and you have strong systems thinking. This links visual-spatial skills with function. How things work mechanically and physiologically, and in multiple space dimensions. I come from a family of engineers and didn't realize when I was younger that it was also associated with art and being a maker. Or why I had friends who were geologists and musicians. I composed music and liked to problem solve. Spent many years in healthcare before recognizing my art was indeed a basic need and I should allocate time for it. Hope others don't wait as long as I did.
I enjoyed your video. I would like to order Daniel Smith watercolour paints. What colors do you suggest? I can afford a red, a blue, a yellow, perhaps two blues. I can make my own green, violet and brown.
you are awesome!! Love your style. Do you have a video on how to mix colors? If not please make one :)

A lways interesting. Could you tell me what shadow colors to use for brown objercts and black objects?Thanks.
@LironYan
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊🙏🏼 That would depend on the environment (: Is there light that reflects from somewhere else? Does the object seem warm? Cool? Don't be afraid to try "weird" choices until you find what works for you!
Love this picture! Did you notice you have painted the reflection of the landscape within the front window?
@LironYan

I haven’t planned to - but wow - what a win 😉😎 This is the magic of focusing on the “abstract” shapes, and getting the values right. Things get painted relatively accurately. Thank you!
As a new painter with no training, I would never know to use colors underneath as a base coat to enhance shadows. I would have painted a straight maroon mixture hoping for the best result. How do you train your eye to see things in a different color dimension? I'm amazed with your perception!
I have just found you, this picture seems advanced teaching do you have a beginner video I can go to please, by the way very nice paiting
