"Colors" For Orchestra (Full Album Orchestration) (BTBAM)

Музыка

I remember being a freshman in college and thinking that it would be awesome to transcribe this entire album for orchestra. At the time, I had only just finished "Foam Born", and the task seemed literally impossible. Like, fr bruh how I'm finna do this?
After completing dozens of other transcriptions, compositions, and other musical projects, I finally got the stones to take on this absolute monster of a project. I am so happy to share it with y'all. Share it with all of your Metal/Orchestra-lovin friends!
This album changed my life when I first heard it in 2008. It is among my favorite albums, and I consider it a masterpiece of modern progressive metal.
Here is the link to the PDF's of all of the scores:

    Alright, if there are a hundred of you, we might be able to pull it off. I'm gonna set up a kickstarter. I've run the numbers multiple times, and (unless there is a very generous orchestra), this project will run between $5k-20k. Going set it at $10k, do a little ad placement and hope for the best. Y'all use your Reddit powers to spread the word if you want to see this happen! Should be up by July and will run through the end of the year

    @@Maremons I've tried proposing this to my orchestra. With virtual orchestras becoming popular, there might be a way to get this done. With the internet, you could probably find enough people willing to do a virtual orchestra version of this. I know I would do it!!!! You could probably round up a whole string section through Mark Wood's Rock Orchestra Camp group. Also, how much are you selling copies of the score for? I'm interested in purchasing the score anyways just so I can have fun learning the parts.

    Colors is my favorite album of all time and I love this version because it sort of allows me to explain what I find so beautiful about it to family members and friends who aren’t metal fans at all. If I showed them the original they’d be like “why do you like this? This is just screaming” but when I show them this they love it and it helps them understand what I hear in the original that I like so much. Thank you so much for making this!

    I never used to listen to metal, but I couldn't get enough of this album the first time I stumbled across it. I listened to it "despite" the vocals, and eventually they grew on me, allowing me to discover all sorts of amazing metal bands! This album literally single-handedly opened up the metal genre to me, which has since been a HUGE part of my life. I'm also a classically trained pianist, and am a regular attendee of the local symphony orchestra, so what you've done here BLEW MY FREAKING MIND. I LOVE YOU! (This is really super good!)

We both had picked it up at different Best Buys when it first came out in 2007, but neither of us had even left the parking lot. We both had just sat there and listened to it from start to finish. I love hearing metal music redone as orchestra because you can experience a much greater depth of the melodies which are generally more difficult to perceive through all the heavy distortion. I am witnessing one of my all-time favorite albums through new eyes thanks to you dude. Cheers

    Thank you so much! This is probably the best description of the reason WHY I make these transcriptions. Not everybody enjoys the sound of distorted guitar, which is a matter of preference, and I understand that. Still, everyone should be able to appreciate this album (at least, I think so), and if I can introduce even one person to this music by way of these orchestrations, I will happily spend as much time as is needed to create them. Thanks again! All the best to you! \m/

    Oh, I really wanted to do this for the parallax II but didn't think it was possible. I would have done it for a wind orchestra because I'd love to perform it with them in real life too.

  • @Maremons

    @Maremons

    Anything is possible! I am actually working on that one for orchestra now, haha. I've found the that the cello and double bass in particular are instrumental (pun intended) in representing the low chug of the guitars. Strings are the only family that can play the lower repeated notes effectively at these tempos. It's already a chop destroyer for bass clarinet, bassoon, tuba, and trombone, so I didn't want to write outside their capabilities. If I can find an orchestra ambitious enough to try it, I will definitely invite you to play! Thanks for listening! \m/
