    Blue is such a great color for monochromatic drawing because it works for dark contrasts and crisp edges, but also offers a huge range of tints and shades. Thanks for touching on the ethical issues with use and interpretation of images- that is something every artist needs to think about! So glad we got another great video from this channel before the weekend!

    I really liked how you talked about AI. I know someone who is an artist, and they post their work online. Many people steal their art and AI generated photos have elements of their style without their consent. Also, I am so excited for your coloring book, I’ve bought your 2023 planner already!

    I've seen award winning artists have their artwork scraped from internet images and the AI program actually attempted to mangle the artists signature in order to hide it. You could still see it though. 😕

    As an 80s baby, with curly hair, and loves Blue I enjoyed the concept and coloring of this one. That’s a lot of blue pencils. I guess not putting away everything has its benefits. If you put all your swatches in a binder you can utilize them down the road by color, without having to take that time again. So, while it didn’t benefit you now, it’s not perzactly time wasted. People; drawing people is so difficult. Give me a puppy, a kitten, an elephant and I can eventually work it out, but I just can’t get people well. I have some anatomy courses to try to attempt to get better. I’m pleased you are keeping the conversation about AI going and openly spoke about certain points that need said and some of what we discussed; about copyright, using it for a reference tool not creating the final piece, and legalities catching up with the moral and ethical values and giving that respect to artists and photographers. As someone who has had both art and photos on a bunch of those sites you mentioned, and many more friends that do as as well, I don’t at all appreciate not being asked permission. Many of those sites we post images to sell products; licensing for that use only not resell of the image. I also sell reference photos for artists, so this doubly awful. I do think it’s not fair to put the more sophisticated AI systems with the lesser systems into one group, even though I think they all overstep ethical boundaries. Not all AI image generators are created the same, nor do they work the same, nor create the same kind of output. The more intricate and complicated systems, which I believe is what you reference, input information. Some have users input the information, choose the images to input or generate a selection of images that the system should pull in to “learn” from the internet, and then output a chosen or random thing that may resemble another’s art and may not. Much of it just looks like a blurry adaptation. Particularly those designing the algorithms scientifically. I believe only a few of these may use images only in the public domain. Their final result is still debatable on whether the AI used actually came up with the image after “learning” or if it is compiled. It’s not drawing nor painting like a human nor any other animal really, but there is much more to these. I’ll explain findings later that delve into this more. AI is not comparable to a human drawing the art nor even a human inputting coding and algorithms as they’ve done and used to do in the 60s to the 90s in particular: using codes to create colors, shapes, patterns, and so forth. As you said they take lifetimes of experience from dozens to millions of artists and photographers, billions to trillions of images, in a short time span; something no single human could do even if they spent a lifetime learning and drawing. Even more of a difference are the simpler systems which heavily rely on others’ work and simply mesh two or more images together. At it’s most basic that is what they are doing. These are more obvious, possibly because their algorithms are less complex or due to reverse-engineering another’s work not quite the same or resources. Their output/final image so clearly is a compilation of other images it should be non-debatable, especially if other artists’/photographers’ watermarks and signatures are visible. It’s happening and there more of these than the sophisticated versions. Some even argue that it shouldn’t be referred to the same, but they do also go by AI. It’s undeniably obvious when its output barely alters a well known film photo or artwork. Unfortunately, I’ve seen some of these even used for covers. I know I typed this in our previous discussion, but it just is so fitting for this AI image generation and writing generation conversation: To paraphrase Jurassic Park, “They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” So much of the whole AI process is negating ethics and morals and other human beings essentially. This is why every science fiction story that ventures into AI goes into these issues. As LAION states on their site, as you use this example, they DID download images and use them to compute before (allegedly) deleting them. This appears to be a general practice, although some retain screenshots or thumbnails for reference to their datasets. Once the AI has images stored in it’s own system in its own way it might be difficult to fight copyright infringement… the developers use this as a loophole. This gives the impression they know it’s wrong and are finding way to avoid getting trouble for it. Not asking for permission, and so far not apologizing after either. Rather than seeking permission and even supporting the artists they trained their AI with by paying for licensing to use, they chose to “steal” others’ work. By their own explanations of how their system outputs, as well as other separate systems, is that AI generally has very poor results for specifics. The images are often blurry and only show patterns that were frequently repeated in the images they sourced from. This seems to add to the argument, based on their own FAQs, about using multiple images in a work that gives a result far more complex with the final result being a compilation not a “drawn” piece from “learning.” AND they are in turn making their data sets of images they “borrowed without permission” (art theft) available for others to use. So even if their particular AI does not do this, they make it available for others to do so without the time to acquire all that information themselves. I find it ironic that they claim their data sets of others’ work falls under creative commons which states: “Share - copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format Adapt - remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially. The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.” How precisely can they license work they are neither authorized nor licensed to use? Generally a license does not grant resell. Those that do are VERY specified. This is too close to going to a gallery, taking pictures of all the images, and then trying to sell the pictures and claiming its original. I learned A LOT prior to this one, but I must admit researching this LAION does not negate any of my prior thoughts. On the contrary this supports all my qualms, concerns, and worries. One MIT site broke it down as being like the AI seeing an image, breaking the patterns down into blocks (which I imagine means pixels), and then trying to reconstruct the image with blocks (pixels) from that image and others. “They can find patterns in art that people have made, but it’s much harder for these models to actually generate creative photos on their own.” I agree with you about what it should be used for and I agree wholeheartedly that something needs to be done soon and that these companies need to be more responsible and held accountable. By the way, art you still dreaming of blue pencils and swatching after all that. ;0)

    Before Covid, I was in colouring groups (which I avoid now). A girl posted a picture she had coloured and I just KNEW I had to have a go at it too. I asked where she got it. "A friend sent it to me." Oh, well, that can usually easily be solved. I saved it into my files and asked Google Images. Oh, it came up right away! The WHOLE picture, that is. On the bottom was two lines asking people not to colour this in as it was her drawing in black ink pen (gorgeous, BTW). She wanted it left as it was. Her name was there, and I think it was posted on Deviant. I saved it to my files and posted it, covered so it couldn't be copied, and told her that her 'so-called friend' had cut off the bottom. She replied: "I don't care." I have had quite a few photos stolen because I didn't know you could do that! Very novice of me. They have been sold on Ebay and I run across them on Google Images and in various online articles. Very disheartening. If an artist (drawing or photographing) 'sees' an image in B&W, it should be left that way. This colouring, in my favourite colour...blue (actually green-blue, not blue-green)...is gorgeous! It doesn't look like she is an alien, but that she is walking down a dark alley at night. Gorgeous capture! This would make me buy the book! And I do judge books by their cover, many times.

    Did not expect the AI art discussion but I certainly enjoyed hearing your opinion! I also have mixed feelings and currently my main concerns are: profiting off AI art with no compensation to the original artists that were used to train the AI and also the fact that AI art is impossible to tell from actual human made art and therefore NEEDS to be somehow marked as AI art, otherwise it's rife for exploitation by people who will claim to be "artists" but the only work they put into their art was coming up with a clever prompt and rerendering the image until they got something they liked, which I think objectively doesnt deserve as much respect as people who put years into perfecting their craft. But I'm also not entirely against AI art because I want art to be accessible and I always found it very sad that people who could not draw/paint/specialize in some rendering software were unable to visualize their ideas. The way I see it is as a more advanced picrew (tool where you can make your own avatar online in different styles) except with a much broader spectrum of possibilities, which in its current form is unfortunately very exploitable, especially in a capitalist society. I think AI art could be ethical but there are some very bad incentive structures currently that make it not so.

    There are already plenty of artist drawn bases and sites made by real people (think Dolldivine) who have more than happily created software for people to use to visualize design. The Sad thing is that art takes hard work and isn't a natural born talent like many claim it is. The best way to learn is to put the work in yourself or find a safe and ethical way to bring your ideas to life that DOESN'T involve cheating people because you don't want to put the time or money into it.

  • @BlueCoolOla

    @BlueCoolOla

    Жыл бұрын

    @@scipunkdollstudios4081 Of course, art is not a naturally born talent, but it is a fact of life that (especially in a capitalist society) most people will never have the time/money to perfect the skills necessary for art, and being able to do that has been a massive sign of privilege. Personally, if let's say, a single mom of three kids who works two jobs just to stay afloat wants to generate some pretty art because it brings her joy, I don't feel comfortable telling her that's wrong. And I also don't find it fair to call it "cheating" as long as you don't pretend you made the art yourself and you don't try to make money off it. Sometimes people want to look at pretty images based on ideas they come up with and there's nothing inherently unethical about that.

  • @scipunkdollstudios4081

    @scipunkdollstudios4081

    Жыл бұрын

    @@BlueCoolOla The problem with it, hence what makes it unethical, is that it's being used for capitalism off of stolen art. A single mom using it for a hobby is *one* thing the bulk of the problem ISN'T hypothetical hobbiest who want to have fun. It's those who have come to conventions, built up shops, and are attacking artists who don't want their work stolen.

    Sarah, this is absolutely stunning!!! Wow... just, ... "Wow!!!!" My major concern with AI is the amount of power that's needed when using it. At a point in our planet's life where we are in crisis, the thought of AI in the hands of 'just anyone'... Sorry - but as the example closest at hand at this moment is art, and because artists are using it, when artists of any level don't actually *need* it to create beautiful art, absolutely scares me. While we're experiencing rolling power cuts to conserve energy, and we're removing lightbulbs out of multiple-bulb fittings, or using an LED lamp when a fully lighted room isn't needed, or, for a great many people, not turning on heating, but using hot water bottles and extra clothing because they can't afford to pay for basics because of soaring prices, someone else is busy using huge amounts of power for something that is a crazy luxury... (not just artists!) Sarah, please understand that I'm not singling you out. It's just that you've talked about it here. Part of me says, "Well, you watch art-tubers make videos with all their energy consuming gadgets. Aren't you being a hypocrite?" And that part of me says, "Yes, I guess I am." But I make up for it with other changes in lifestyle - eg like sweeping the floors instead of hoovering, not having a tumble dryer, not using the central heating, only using the car for essentials now - things that are needed these days because of my low budget, but which more than make up for my laptop use, and they are things that I've done since before this major crisis. It's why my fuel bills are far lower than average for my type of house. I took Prince Charles and David Bellamy seriously way back in the day, when so many people were laughing at them. I'm lucky, really, because, having been brought up in a situation where 'frugal' was the norm, I've never been extravagant, so the extra changes I've made recently aren't really difficult. Anyway, I feel so much better without the heating, and the baby hot-water-bottles in the pockets of my gilet are fantastic at keeping me warm as toast! Even so, yes, I do feel I'm being a hypocrite so I'm trying to cut back on my laptop use for watching TV and art tube... This hypocrite's signing off now to continue the debate in my head, though knowing that I'm not going to find the answers. I love your work, and a few others' too, so it really would be *very* tough to turn you off! 😊

What if....you assigned each brand/box it's own colour and wrapped a piece of Washi around each pencil. Then when you're done, it would be somewhat easier/faster returning them to their proper place?! Love the '80s page. Would really love to see you revisit this one but with actual '80s colours, i.e. neons- pink, green, yellow, purple, electric blue and maybe some metallic gold or silver thrown in for Bling !! I got the color planner as a Xmas gift. Really didn’t expect that one and I’m so excited to use it. The funny thing about it is I completely forgot I sent your video about it to my mom like a “Heyy this looks sooo cool! I’d love one of these” I figured she’d forget about it so I forgot about it. And the second I ripped the wrapper and saw those colorful squiggles I was soo excited! Not only is it awesome but it meant a lot my mom listened and remembered even when I didn’t. I had a very nice Xmas this yr bc of that.

    I'm no painter of coloring books. I hated it as child not to draw my own ideas. but to watch your one-color challange was very interesting. I own about 60 to 70 colorpencils. only 48 are artist quality. I think I will go into colorpencil painting. it's really magic what possibilities they offer.

    Yaaaaay my favorite color! This is gonna be good! Edit: I'm not an expert on digital art or vectors or anything like that, but I find it easier and less time-consuming to turn the pencil sketches themselves into vectors by using the "extract line drawing from image" tool, cranking up both the white and black values, then erasing any mistakes and rough edges and tweaking the features. Edit2: regarding AI, since the robots are eventually gonna own us anyway, we might as well cash in on their not-so-hard-work before they grow sentient enough to start the robopocalypse. (jk) But seriously, art sites and competitions can just put rules banning pure 100% AI generated art, and only allow use of AI art as references or even small photoshopped pieces of them as long as most of the work was done by human hands. Maybe even make this a worldwide law or something just like copyright laws. Solves most of the problems, no?

    Challenge: if you make it to 1 million subscribers by 2024, how about you have to do a drawing with every colored pencil you own *It would definitely be a pretty big drawing but it would be super entertaining to watch* Edit: in addition I mean all of the colored pencils/brands you use on a regular basis, not all of the ones that you own- I’m not entirely sure that would even be possible 😅

    Suggestion: put together a whole bunch of sets of colors and give them to 1) school children 2) kids of the homeless 3) underprivileged kids 4) seniors; maybe they are taking a class or maybe they are in a home of some sort. Don't worry about brands, just pick good colors. Maybe give them some of your old coloring books, too. And I'm waiting for your new coloring book to come out...!

    Lmao you nailed the aesthetic so well - the first thing I thought of when seeing the page was Black Mirror's San Junipero, which is very much set in the 80's...kinda (hard to explain if you haven't seen it). And as for the vector art, I didn't realize there was strong apps now for ipads for creating vector- I'm used to doing commissions on my computer with Illustrator, which yeah... that hair had to be such a pain to do. Ironically it was vector art that started draining my passion for art, which then made me switch up and go back to traditional art, and now I've done mostly watercolor in the past few years. Vector is such a great tool for making art but it can be.... annoying.

    This is Adobe’s Illustrator for iPad! It’s actually more intuitive to draw with than using a tablet on the computer, in my experience. Although I usually switch to a computer for final touch ups (the files are the same format)

    Sarah could you do a colouring book for watercolour with coldpressed paper I’ve wanted one for such a long time but no one‘s been able to create one Kristy Rice did but it’s hot press. I would also love a marker colouring book that has marker paper would you be able to create one of those? I just learnt a new hack that if you put clear just so either on top of the colouring page or behind it it stops barking from going through the other side.

    Wonderful video. And I love the color blue haven't been chosen coincidentally while I am in the midst of a cold snap in my area. Congratulations on creating a new coloring book. I love the '80s theme in this picture and the hairstyle especially. Blessings to you and yours and Merry Christmas. PS absolutely love the new calendar! I use inktense on the name page and they went down like butter. they are still one of my favorite tools to use especially when I have the fun of seeing how the colors change once they are activated.😉😃
