    The Guy No, rwd usually does better in my experience. I don’t need to put my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 in 4x4 until the snow gets up to the plastic air dam on the front. I always run Cooper Adventurer AT3 S4 tires, which are rated extremely high for snow and ice. The only time I need 4x4 is on steep hills coming to a complete stop, or on pure ice. My truck is even a open rear diff!

  • @deereman8237

    @deereman8237

    5 жыл бұрын

    The reason so many like fwd on the snow, is because the rear end can’t kick out around a corner, which falsely gives the image of traction, but when headed up a hill, the weight is transferred toward the rear of the vehicle, giving it more traction.

    I live in Colorado Springs now. I have for 13 years, and chains in the city aren't legal UNLESS the vehicle actually needs them (USPS uses chains on mail trucks, semis, etc.) I believe 26,000 is the minimum for the "Colorado Chains Law." And of course in the mountains there are plenty of passes and places that require you to have them as well even on regular cars, just not city driving.

    Here's a tip for anyone scrolling through the comments section who could use some help in the drive-on-ice department: The maximum traction you will ever achieve on ice is just before the tire begins to spin/slip. Key word: BEFORE. If you're spinning, you're leaving untapped potential on the table. Back off and EASE into the power, ramp up the throttle like there's a pile of eggs under the peddle that you don't want to break. Find the threshold of traction, when you break past it (begin to spin), back off and then ease back into it. If you can't find and maintain a threshold of traction, at least make an attempt to pass through the threshold by pumping the accelerator. Each time the wheel spins up and breaks traction and then slows down and "grabs" traction again, you will pass through the peak of available traction 2 times, repeat this over and over to attempt forward progress on particularly terrible spots. Most traction control systems do NOT find the threshold of traction, rather, they REQUIRE that you break the threshold of traction before they begin to override throttle input and apply brakes to spinning tires, but it's too late, at this point, holding the throttle down just results in spinning tires slowly, which is no better than spinning tires fast. Do not rely on the traction control, it is a reactive system that does NOT find the maximum available traction.

    @Mad Adam try driving for a taxi company who won't install winter tires on their cabs, like I do. That's why I didn't go out in that. Doesn't make sense to me to try and make a hundred bucks or maybe get stuck in a ditch 🤷‍♂️

    This is sad. I have a Subaru Legacy with winter tires and that car wouldn’t have even struggled a little bit on that hill. I’ve gone up much steeper hills with more snow on the ground and have been just fine.

    @@Uncle-Cookoo works if the road wasn't solid ice with snow cover. I was there that day as well. I started down the hill fine and then the vehicle started to pick up speed. All the way down Fillmore. I was the car with the flashers. I took my car out on a pile of rocks and curb so I didn't take out 8 cars at the Red light in front of me. My range rover did great when I went home to get it right after. Ice takes over. That morning there was no snow. Colorado; wait 5 minutes and the weather changes.

    I drive this road everyday and people should know that you get off 25 one exit further north at Garden of the Gods, which is level, and drive to Centennial, down the hill (a smaller hill than Fillmore) South to Fillmore, creep downhill, slowly if that's the direction you need to go. Otherwise you are at the top. I do it every day, usually without that much snow. I got caught in a snow storm last winter on my motorcycle (rain was predicted for later that day) and I drove down that hill. Of course the snow was very light and slushy. Scary none-the-less. I drive my motorcycle all through the winter here, except for days like this of course. If there's a chance of snow or ice, it stays in the garage and the 4X4 comes out. (BTW, Centennial is at the top of the hill where it levels out)
