The west side by Grand Lake was the East Troublesome fire in 2020. It threw embers over the continental divide and started to burn in towards Estes. At the same time the Cameron peak fire was burning to the north and east. Combined they were most destructive fires in Colorado history as measured by acres burned and natural resources lost. The two fires combined burned over over 400,000 acres.

I couldn't make it to our yearly CO trip due to health issues. I have been watching these CO videos, to help fill the void in my soul. Love the drone shots big time. For me, it doesn't have to be hard core trails, and flexing the rigs to the max all day long. Just getting away from it all, for a short time, deep into the lands is all that matters. The natural landscape scenery, is what thrills me the most. See you next Friday! 🤟

Another epic video, I love it out west and can’t wait to get back out there. We made an eleven day trip last summer. Spent 5 days in Wyoming then headed north into Montana and back down through the dakotas and home. Not enough time to take in what I would have liked. But it got the kids pumped to wanna go back out. If you are ever around Cody Wyoming, take the chief joseph highway to bear tooth pass ! It will take you to “ the top of the world store” which wasn’t open while we were there because the pass had just opened the day before. But it will drop you right into red lodge Montana and is a really scenic drive ! I really love Colorado too and is on our list of hopefuls nexts list. Keep up what y’all are doing, because i stopped watching television because of great channels like y’all’s 👍👍

Great video. I love the wilderness and going to remote places. However, I also love our National Parks. I have been fortunate to have visited 31 of the 63 Parks. Being around the crowds isn’t fun but I’m willing to put up with it to see amazing sights, learn some cool history and talk to the rangers (plus the gift shops are fun!!).

You guys got me hooked on Gaia and the new overlanding layer is a game changer. The NPS layer is indispensable inside national parks especially with the family needing bathroom breaks. I can spend hours working on my maps combining Google maps in my research. Beautiful video once again.

Yep you're right about the pine cones.... They actually figured it out on accident.... They almost had that type of tree go extinct I think.... And just by chance... by accident... The fire happened and then they finally learned how those trees germinate.... I forgot what type of tree it is... It's legit though... We talked about it in my 400 level biogeography class. It was sort of an example of over conservation...

Van Lifers, RVers... Many are no different than us... but there is in Colorado a phrase I have heard to describe that point... I personally am not fond of it as it comes across as elitist... but the locals there would seem to call it "The Subaru line"... That point where the guys in the Subarus can no longer "off road". But the rock crawlers could look at us with the same disdain. When they have 40+ inches of tire and enough articulation to put their front tire on the hood of a stock Rubicon they can in turn go places out overland Jeeps and Toyotas cannot. In the end, Van Lifers are not that different from the origins of overlanding. RVers... Well some are retirees... some are just boondockers doing much the same as us, but in a format that many consider easier for the family... My mother often told me of our camping in the mountains of Arkansas with our popup behind our old station wagon when I was a preschooler in the early to mid 70s (my only memories are of me trying to help get ready for camping, somehow knocking the wheel chock out and getting my arm caught between the camper and car trying to "fix it" (I was scared, but not injured, though it took 2 doctors, detailed explanation of my x-ray, and a nurse to convince me it was not broken) or many camping trips in grade school), waking up in a cloud one morning (mom was afraid I would wander into the fog and fall off a nearby cliff... me waking up one morning with a row of spider bites the full length of my arm and side where I had pinned the spider as I slept... Even if they stayed in a campground we always went to the full primitive sites (no water or electricity)... Where my folks that different from the overlanding we do now??? Where they deserving of the disdain because they could not afford 2 cars plus a 4x4 with tents to get us further into the woods? Was my dad's friend better because he owned a IH Scout 2 (o.k. I AM a li'l jealous of him for that SUV) that he took "boondocking" (to him a catch all term for off roading, and camping remotely) and would put the family in a cabin tent with army surplus cots and pool float type air mattresses at the same camp sites as us while we had a pop up camper (that he could not afford because he had the IH)
