Colorado Hummingbirds Beating the Snow

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hummingbirds begin to return to Colorado in mid-April. A late May cold snap has these poor little guys desperate for food to survive the frosty night ahead. The Front Range Gardener has a soft spot for birds, and these guys need all the help they can get.
This unusual weather really stresses birds. Supplemental food can really make the difference in surviving until daylight. Please hang your hummingbird feeders with fresh nectar.

Thanks for the info and beautiful filming. Glad they can find food in your place - Snow ? In Newark yesterday(90 degrees) found the 1st expired hummingbird of the season ( hit windows) A Friend & I rescue songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, TRT made a video named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. In Newark most of the birds that hit the glass skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to the cement pavement. We bring injured to TRT for a 2nd chance, Rewatched few time, can not get over the snow - so happy you cared enough to put out food, LOVED THIS VIDEO read that some farmers are using hummingbirds (place feeders) in their raspberry & Blueberry farms a female will catch 2000+a day of harmful small bugs to feed young , these small bugs are hard to get rid of on the infected crops.

You bring up an excellent point: hummingbirds eat more than just nectar. It was 90 in Denver Thursday and snowing Friday. That's how crazy Colorado weather is. Thanks for watching.

We noticed more visitors to our feeder but not as many as you had. Good job!

What’s their natural food source if they didn’t have feeders? Would they simply migrate south?

In the wild, hummingbirds eat nectar from flowers and also small insects. Having food will not prevent them from migrating.

@@FrontRangeGardener There’s snow on the ground in the video. Surely there aren’t any flowers left at that point. All the natural floral sources would be damaged by the freezing temperatures. Also do you know what natural floral sources there would be native to Colorado at this time?

@@grundlecheese6675 I recorded this video in May 2022. There are a few early spring flowers like dandelions. However the number of birds at my feeders show that these guys were desperate for food.

I don't think they can survive the cold.
