Color Grading Tutorial: Free Cinematic Looks in Final Cut Pro 7, Premiere & After Effects

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here's an easy color-correcting tutorial about how to get a popular "cinematic" film look without paying for additional plug-ins or software -- you can use the editing software that you already are using.
Using Final Cut Pro 7, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere I'll show you the basics of how to tint your darks toward teal and make your highlights and midtones warmer. Tools used include the 3-way color corrector, Levels, Curves, and Red Giant Software's free Colorista Free plugin. For those who own Magic Bullet Looks, I show you how to create a quick look as well.
Here's where to get Colorista Free for Premiere, After Effects or Final Cut Pro:

    @CLAPBUGGAZ yeah, I do something similar for most of my music videos. Every piece has a unique character and feel, so I always do my secondary color grading according to the color palette, look and atmosphere of the video. But I often use a form of these same techniques and tools.

    Hi, Is there any plugin or software which can match 2-3 different camera footage because in this case the editing will be much easier for me. I heard about a software which match the footage according to the audio level. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Garrett, I'm new to your channel and I really enjoyed this tutorial. One other question I have for you is what kind of footage were you working with? Raw? ProRes Flat? and what Camera did you use... pretty much what were your settings if you don't mind sharing. I'm going to be shooting a short for my class and I wanted a looks similar to the movie "her" and I think your footage was very close to that. Thank you

    Hey man! For this, I shot on a canon 5d3 and used the Technicolor Cinestyle color profile, which is really flat. You can also search for 5tu's ultra flat color profile, which does something similar but doesn't involve any downloads or custom installations on your camera. So much of the look is based on lighting, though! The color profile is only a point of reference. Good luck!

    Thanks. so much! In that case I have on last question for you, how many lights did you set up for that look? Basic 3 point lighting or more?

  • @garrettgibbons

    @garrettgibbons

    Ricardo Castelin I think this was a two-light setup on the subject, and there was one 800 watt light bouncing off of the ceiling to light the background, though there were practical bulbs at the location that we turned on for texture and to light the background.

    Garrett Gibbons looks awesome. Do you have a tutorial or can you write up or do one on camera setting? I have a canon t3i. EFS 18-55 lens, Rokinon set T1.5 Full Frame Cine Lens DS. I do mainly indoor shooting for film on flat profile. I do realize I would have to adjust ISO and Aperture based on light and desired effect. My current camera settings are as follows: Frame Per Seconds 24, Shutter Speed 50, ISO 1600, Aperture 9, Custom Faithful (Sharpness 0, Contract 0, Saturation -2, Color Tone -2. Any guidance you can provide is appreciated. My biggest challenge is when I upload the clips in post like Adobe Premiere or speed grade and try to apply LUTs, it does not come out they way the LUTs supposed to look.

  • @garrettgibbons

    @garrettgibbons

    9 жыл бұрын

    Frank, I'll tell you that many of your settings are good. Make sure that you are correctly white balanced for the scene, too. If you are in the shade but have white balance set to sunny out subject will look very blue, for example. That may be what is throwing off your LUTs? Also, I prefer to shoot as close to wide open as possible, and only use an aperture setting of f/9 if it is for a documentary style shoot where I need a deep depth of field. I recommend f/4 or so for a shallower depth of field and a more contemporary look. I hope that helps.

    Garrett Gibbons Yes, these are helping me alot. I am not very well versed on how to do the white balance for filming on DSLR. Do you have any info/direction you could provide? I do white balance for photography, but not for filming.

  • @garrettgibbons

    Just set the WB preset for the lighting conditions you are shooting in. For example, if in the shade, set the WB for the shade preset. The principles of WB for film and photo are the same, but unless shooting raw video (and planning to color correct in Resolve) you can't as easily change the WB in post with video as you can with a raw photo.

    Desaturate the image heavily and add in duotones to get the right look. The bleach bypass look of Saving Private Ryan is achievable in a lot of different ways. I could make a tutorial at some point if there aren't many out there, but I suspect some quick Googling will find some good info!

    Thank you but i don't know exactly what you u mean by duotones? Yes i will look around but I have Final Cut Pro 7 and Magic Bullet Suite so i have to conform to that...

  • @garrettgibbons

    FCP7 is powerful and stable! Magic Bullet is awesome too. Duotones involve tinting the dark areas of an image towards one color and tinting the light areas towards another color. For example, tinting the darks towards blue and the lights towards amber can create an eerie feeling.
