Color Grading PRORES RAW For The First Time | Sony FX6 & Atomos Ninja V Footage

In this video I see what it’s like to colour grade ProRes RAW footage from the Sony FX6 using the Atoms Ninja V. I wanted to find out how fast it runs, what it’s like to grade, what kind of dynamic range you get and whether it’s worth the large file sizes. Enjoy!

    Hi Harv! I´m using Premiere pro. When you apply the Arri luts, are these "techincal" luts or "creative" luts? Because in PP you choose, in Lumetri, if its a technical lut or a creative lut. I dont see you make that choice in Final cut? Thanks for a great channel!

  • @HarvVideoAudioStuff

    @HarvVideoAudioStuff

    Hmm, my guess would be technical as they’re basically doing a log to rec709 conversion (albeit very flatteringly) 👍🏻 have you tested between the two? What kind of difference does it make? Many thanks

    @@HarvVideoAudioStuff Yes, I think so to. You cant see any difference if you apply it in input lut (technical) or creative? Dont know why it is two options? Thanks!

    Thanks Harv!… for the work I’m doing, the Raw still seems excessive?… but I’m curious how to execute creating the file in the first place? Might sound like a stupid question? But it seems obscure to me. I’m working with a Sony a7S III and a Ninja V. I know the Ninja can record “Raw”… but I’m not sure how to make sure I’m sending that out the HDMI of the Sony?? Also what do you do with the odd image on screen? I’m used to Slog II and the Ninja allows,for a LUT so I have an idea what I’m getting…. But how do you deal with ProRes Raw??? [for viewing]. 😊

    @@rich9785 Thanks! And yeah, OK, if you don’t mind? Can you explain what you get out of the “raw” workflow? Other than really LARGE files? I’ve had such great success with good old Slog II ProRes 422 10bit workflow. I’m having a hard time understanding “why” RAW? Also, I assume that RAW means no Slog [and other picture profiles] correct? I really don’t understand what RAW means in this case? How raw IS “RAW”? Or is it still actually another Codec? [that’s just less messed with than the codec’s I’m used to using?

    @@Studio51media sorry man.. I don’t have the tech speak to flesh it all out.. and I’m still working it all out.. but keeping researching it .. I’m heading toward HDR so it makes sense for me and I love 12 bit. I know it’s big but it just feels Kickass to me.

  • @Studio51media

    @@rich9785 It’s OK I appreciate the honesty! And yeah, 12 bit makes sense to me… as I have completely proven to myself that the internal codec of my old A6300’s [4.2.0 - 8 bit] was NOT workable when using multiple cameras. White balance / color correction proved absolutely impossible when using 4.2.0 -8bit]… long story but the point is that each camera “pulled”certain colors [that fell between the limited 4.2.0 -8bit color resolution] in different directions..As an example; when I matched “flesh tones” between cameras, it was then, obvious, that each camera was interpreting certain pastels completely differently…so then… If I [instead attempted] to matched the offending pastels…the flesh tones would go wacky… and around and around I would go. I found that very small “Hue” adjustments could help a little… but the problem became much more workable after I bought Ninja V’s, and yes, the old A6300’s can output 10 bit 4.2.2 from the HDMI! [even though they can NOT record that internally!!]. An additional benefit of using the Ninja V’s is the “thermal” issues also went away, So it was a “win-win” My understanding is that the RAW the Ninja V captures is 16 bit! ? [assuming you HAVE a camera capable of 16 bit HDMI output??] I believe my A7S III IS capable of 16 bit Raw… just not sure I need it?? Nor how to make it happen? LOL

    @@Studio51media you’ve spent some time on this Brad .. I shoot with an A7s3 with the NinjaV .. 4K 12bit recording in ProRes Raw.. Which is awesome for adjusting colour temp and iso after you shoot. But search up ‘The DP Journey’.. he’s amazing at this stuff and produces great explanatory vids.. check his raw vids out man. Colour spectrum is key also.. and DP Journey covers this too. Well worth a look man. What I’m learning is we have to be colourist experts to actually get a good result.. which sucks because I don’t want to spend time ‘processing’ .. I want to be shooting.. I don’t know about you but it seems to take a lot of effort over a long period of time to get something beautiful. Bugger it.

    Harv, What monitoring lut are you using with the ninja if any? Because technically you wouldn’t be able to use the phantom LUTs for monitoring because prores isn’t a log file, correct?
