Colombia debates future of child surrogacy | DW News

Surrogacy is a multimillion dollar market that only a few countries have legalized.  In Colombia, paying women to have babies for would-be parents is neither legal, nor strictly forbidden. Surrogates can be found online, or via medical facilities specializing in match-ups. The Colombian congress is debating whether legislation is needed - in the meantime it's business as usual.

The children are not complaining…now that they’re adults are happy to be alive and with parents that want them so much that they’re willing to pay to have them

I'm not the original poster, but on Reddit I saw kids (now adults) born via surrogacy who seemed glad the process had existed and that their parents had taken the trouble to do it. I'm sure it's not all kids.@@AlexJaneson

@2:30 I disagree with regulation if it includes the government getting a cut, which it usually does. They probably want a cut of the profits.

surrogacy is the ultimate form of prostitution, if we are going to allow it while there are still orphans crying themselves to sleep then it absolutely should be heavily regulated & taxed by every gov't involved.

I see it as a win:win. Women are being compensated for being a carrier of someone else's baby and benefiting economically in their country and the prospective mother or parents are benefiting from the experience of having and raising a child. The more regulations that arise, the more expensive and hurdles prospective parent(s) will face.

How can you expect the surrogate mother to give up 9 months of her life and risk her own life and health to help this childless couple for free? Of course she has to be compensated. That’s not selling babies. The baby is already genetically the same as the American parents. The surrogate mother has no relation to the baby. She can’t sell what isn’t hers. She is allowing the use of her body to bring their child to term. There is nothing wrong with that.

I think with good regulation, including the vetting of the adoptive parents as for any other adoption, and the exclusion of exploitative for-profit surrogacy agencies, paid surrogacy should be legal. and it would probably make sense to give the birtth mother the unilateral right until the handover to withdraw from the deal and keep the child as her own... though she would then have to return the money, which would be a problem.

❤ Seems being part of surrogacy is a brave act & it's being a "HERO" for the future family of people who are not biologically able to have their own children... idea of "helping" others is a great idea, just not make it like a pure "business" ... and make sure all parties are protected and respected ... Hindrances to voluntary decision to help and to assist others to gain a chance to form a family seems a VIOLATION of human rights (a dictatorship) to the person who voluntarily deciding to be a surrogate and to the people who desires to complete a family or begging for help of having a child - this hindrances are like DICTATORSHIP, an ideology of being "ideal " on narrowed rules and perceptions...

surrogacy occurs in one of two situations either you had a baby you couldn't abort in time & don't want to keep, or a rich lady doesn't want to ruin her figure so you're taking her money to have a kid you'll never hold. either way it is an aberration

this pushed policy seems a push with a secret eye on the possible abuses, rather than the actual benefits to some ;-) It's a good thing here that you hear Columbia is VERY worried about possible abuses... while the western world countries where they are pushing it or have already legalised it, you never heard any political talk on the possible abuses :-p Some ppl that want kids shouldn't have them: peadofiles for one but also pppl who aren't in a functional relationship to begin with ;-) The other idea that's pushed these days is the 'babies without men' train that just wants to rely on spermbanks, untill they found out their kid actually has a few hundred half brothers and sisters :-p All if it gets pushed through very quickly, and clearly the legislations for it are all faulty to say the least

anonymous childbearing or birth is unethical. BUT if the surrogate or sperm or egg donor is willing to become a co-parent in raising the child as a friend of the family (and not just for money, or with NO money involved) then it is okay and an agreement between friends. THAT is ethical. You can do that in the US outside of the IVF system or go to England where such practices are NOT done anonymously or for money.

  • @barbarac9805

If the surrogate wants to remain anonymous, what's unethical about it? Surrogacy is a loving service to people that are unable to conceive, why shouldn't the surrogate be compensated? You seem to be unaware that surrogacy happens everyday, all over the world and has for a long time.
