Collegiate Shag Basic - Practice Collegiate Shag - Dancing Fast

How to Dance Collegiate Shag Fast is really only about a few things, your efficiency, how you're thinking about your movements and practice! So are you ready to Practice Collegiate Shag with me? Fast? This video goes through different beats per minute practice rounds to help you build up to that next level. I'm doing this solo and you can do it with me, anywhere. So go ahead and practice shag with me! Dance all of them or skip to the speed you want to practice. To keep it easy, we are doing the Collegiate Shag Basic only which is a 6-count but we are doing different variations of the shag basic throughout the song.
***If you're a lead, mirror my footwork. So weight starts on your left and you'd kick with your right. Verses a follow footwork where your weight starts on your right and you kick with your left.

The band you're listening to is Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five featuring Hilary Alexander and I talk more about them and how awesome they are here: 02:13 and you can find more about them here: www.campusfive.com/
I started Live.Collegiate.Shag on Instagram to drive interest in the dance and I've had a ton of people who want to learn who aren't near any of the hot spots. You can find a map under Resources here: livecollegiateshag.wixsite.co... if you want to find Collegiate Shag near you.
You can find some of the basic Collegiate Shag Footwork in this video: Double Kick Basic, Step Kick Basic, Kick Butt Basic, Cross Kick Basic, Tap Back Basic, Slide back basic, shag breaks, 3 kick basic (no quick quick) - these are all 6 counts with most of them in the Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick pattern. This is not an instructional video but it doesn't mean you can't learn from watching, also all these footwork variations can be found in vintage clips.
Thanks so much for practicing Collegiate Shag with me. See you on the dance floor

I understand. I think that it takes some time to learn to trust the dance community that you enter. I'd suggest trying to find a dance location and just going to watch. See if you feel comfortable and then slowly try to dance here and there. You'll build friendships and eventually trust and then it won't be weird.

Long time Lindy Hoper who has been also working a Bal and some Slow bal this past year .Just getting to a serious attempt to learn Collegiate shag now after years of dabbling with it here and there at workshop classes and taking a short series years back. I am at the point with my Shag where I need to take my own advice I give when teaching Lindy and learn those basics as thoroughly as possible and get good clean basics in my muscle memory and get to the point I where I can also do them in all sorts of directions on the floor. This video with a variety of solid basics demonstrated and the progressive tempo increases is an awesome resource at this point and I am among those setting some goals based on this vid. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Maybe one day I will be able to lead the style well enough to enjoy a Collegiate Shag dance with you at an event one day :) I will be subscribing for sure to see what other helpful videos you have out there. Great job and thank you for making this!

@@LiveCollegiateShag Honestly, I have a question now. Lol. My girlfriend has crazy legs, kind of like Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz. We're having trouble getting her to keep her "claps tighter." We were thinking about putting those elastic aerobics bands around her ankles or tying her ankles together with a desired slack in between. We were wondering if there was a more conventional way of accomplishing the results we're looking for? We've tried working our way up from about 150 BPM to 200 and she can keep up physically just not rhythmically. Any advice?

As a person who is completely new to shag and has had ankle and foot injury issues last year, I would like to ask, do you focus on tightening your abs, or is it tightening the glutes, or something else? 4 жыл бұрын

Hi Debbie! Thanks for asking. I'd say my core is engaged while I'm dancing but I'm also very relaxed. I'd say I'd be more worried about your foot wear. Make sure you have good arch support in your shoes. Your muscles are going to be sore for awhile from Shag just because it's a completely different movement (people will say they've tried running to get in shape for shag but it never works, the only thing that gets your body in shape for shag, is practicing shag). Have you seen my shoe video? *as for glutes... if you have a large butt like I do, you might have to tuck it or tighten it to prevent it from doing a counter bounce, I had that problem when I first started though most people have that problem with their boobs... our bodies are all so different. Hope this helped. Feel free to ask more questions at live.collegiate.shag@gmail.com

Thank you Hector. For your double kick don't make the second kick as big as the first. You're almost doing a small pump, or baby kick while your foot is already out there. So try to look in a mirror and see (side angle) if you're doing two full kicks for each double kick. Weird to type this but I hope that makes since.

  • @LiveCollegiateShag

For leads (often the man) they would do the opposite foot. So they would kick first with their right foot. Where as the follow (often the woman) will start on the same foot I did and the first kick is with the left. I wouldn't suggest learning both at first as it can be confusing. Unless you plan on switching roles. I find it is best to start with one and get good at it before adding other elements. Have fun!

Hahaha I can only imagine. Lol what were you searching for to find this if not Collegiate Shag? I'm surprised it came up under anything else. Yes, unfortunately different parts of the world have different meaning but vintage dances have been called the shag for a long time. This dance was created in America in the 1930's by College kids and became popular in the 1940's. What is the history behind the word Shag in Britain? :) I hope this helps make the word a little more innocent or at least it can be a conversation starter the next time you're with friends
