That LSU team in 2019 was stacked, they won the National title. Burrow set a bunch of QB records that year, they were virtually unstoppable. As for tickets, it's usually students and family get priority first, but after a few days, if a certain number hasn't been reached, it's open to the public. So teams that don't have a strong fanbase or pretty much suck, they often get their stadium 'hijacked' by visiting team.

The UGA-Notre Dame game was a confluence of at least two factors if I remember correctly. The first was that Georgia had not played ND (one of the bluebloods of college football) since the 1980 National Championship game so fans were excited to travel to Indiana. The second was that Hurricane Irma was threatening to make landfall in Georgia so many people evacuated and decided to make a trip of it. Apparently UGA fans also took over a Chicago Cubs baseball game or two while in the area.

Us Georgia fans would love to have you! But be forewarned, the Florida Gators are a pretty big rival. Georgia travels really well and both of those games they showed were years in which they played in the National Championship game. In fact, when heading to Notre Dame, Georgia fans were turning down offers around $5,000 from Delta Airlines to take a later flight because they overbooked the flights. There's a video on KZread filmed from the crowd of the Georgia fans there singing the fight song which includes the line 'to hell with [insert opposing team name]'. Notre Dame is a Catholic school so their stadium DJ tried playing music to drown them out and it still didn't work.

Many Georgia fans made a whole weekend out of going to Chicago, then driving the 95 miles to Notre Dame for the game, but they also made it a monster sports weekend. Legendary retired Georgia coach, Vince Dooley, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Chicago Cubs baseball game on Friday night- the U-G-A! chants took over that stadium, as the Bulldog fans took in the sights at Wrigley Field. Then the Chicago Bears played the Atlanta Falcons (professional team from Georgia) on Sunday in Chicago. Georgia and Notre Dame rarely ever play each other - the last time before then was 1980, when UGA beat them for the National Championship

While yes, the away team is allocated tickets for the visiting team section, just like a normal EFL team would, the difference is that resale of the tickets is perfectly allowed. Any other tickets not grabbed by season ticket holders are permitted to be bought by anyone regardless of who they support, so while there is a visiting section at college football games, it doesn't mean you have to sit there. These types of situations where a visiting team's fans take over a stadium are usually when a team that is terrible is playing against a team that is either really good, or has an extremely loyal fanbase. Nebraska and Georgia are examples of really loyal fanbases. Alabama and LSU were examples of teams that were in contention for National Championships those particular years. Vanderbilt is an example of a team that is historically very bad at Football.

You have to keep some things in mind.... -1 Most of these big time football schools, which are doing the takeover have alumni and fans all over the country who don't live in their schools state or find it hard to get tickets to games. Much easier to see your team on the road especially if the opposing team sucks. -2 there is a huge resale market for tickets. Students will go, but others may willingly give up tickets if the team sucks. At most schools, student tickets are the only allocated tickets and that's usually reserved to upper classmen and a lottery system... -3 if you can, get to Ohio State/Michigan. OLDEST and most ruckus rivalry game to this day. It's why it is just refered to as "The Game". There is no better...

The Nebraska Cornhuskers were dominant in the 70s and 90s, fielding one of the greatest teams of all time in the 90s. We have 5 National Championships. Although we've fizzled out a bit in the 10s and 20s, we still hold the record for most consecutive sellout home games in history with like 330+, going back to like the 60s. And we're known to have the nicest and most welcoming fans, even when losing. We'll invite the opposing fans to tailgating, partying the weekend before, after the game and the next day. Colorado on the other hand... it used to get VIOLENT. Mild riots, violence, flipping cars out of rage. We don't get to play them very often anymore though.

One thing to keep in mind is most of the major universities have alumni and fans spread across the country. So, the entire visiting crowd isn't traveling solely from the state where the university is. Yes, there is usually a large number coming from that general region, but many of them are coming in from other large cities too where it may be just a short drive or flight.

Notre Dame is in South Bend Indiana. About an hour and a half's drive from Chicago. Even though it's in another state, Chicago has defacto adopted Notre Dame as one of it's team's. There's a HUGE Irish Catholic population in Chicago, and a lot of graduates of the University end up moving to Chicago. Many of the local Football products end up playing there as well. They've played quite a few games in Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears over the years.

One of the famous quotes about Notre Dame Stadium comes from the movie Rudy where the character of coach Dan Divine says "No one - and I mean, no one - comes into our house and pushes us around." So it's kind of funny to see Georgia fans take it over like that. It's wild too, because Notre Dame Stadium is very much the kind of college football hallowed ground that earns that kind of quote. That would be not at all unlike most of Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge being taken over by opposing fans.

"The original Alabama"? Really? Not a fan of Bama but c'mon. Bama has won 6 titles and played in 8 championship games in 10 years, including 7 playoff appearances with a record of 6-1 in semifinal games. The only time they've lost in the semifinals was 2014. Nebraska is one of the winning-est programs and was great under Tom, but to compare them to Bama?🤦‍♂ Not to mention Bama was Bama in the 60's & 70's when Bear Bryant was there winning 6 titles in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, and 1979. Ohio State would have a better argument of being "the original Alabama". Woody Hayes won national titles in 1954, 1957, 1961 and 1970. Keep in mind there were consensus national titles and non-consensus national titles back then.

I live in California and went to a recent Stanford/Notre Dame game, and the stadium was about 3/4 full of Irish fans. And there are sections. Teams like Vanderbilt (SEC) and Duke (ACC) are kind of weak sister schools in their respective conferences because they have much higher academic standards (which makes it harder to recruit players) and smaller allocation of funds to the athletic programs. As a result, bigger and better teams like Georgia, LSU, and Alabama (which is not even in the same conference as Duke) are able to bring a massive traveling fan base and dominate those team's stadiums. Of course because it's much easier to field a really good basketball team (all you need are 11 players as opposed to about 100 for football) both Vandy and certainly Duke are often basketball powerhouses.

One game you guys should take a look at the Red River Shootout (Oklahoma vs Texas) game for the atmosphere. Every year it's played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas in the middle of the State Fair grounds of Texas. The stadium is just about halfway between the two campuses and it's a very easy drive for both sides. The tickets are split down the 50 yard line. Texas on one side. OU on the other. The insanity of that game is also the fact that it's literally in the middle of a fair that draws thousands daily for a month. And just throw in another 95000 people where half hate the other half.

Schools like Vanderbilt and Duke don't have a very strong tradition in football and they usually aren't very good, so naturally there's an enthusiasm gap whenever one of the bluebloods comes to play at a school where football takes a backseat to baseball or basketball respectively. On the flip side, the college football programs that are contenders year in and year out become nationally recognized brands with fans all over the country. You won't have to search very hard to find Alabama and Ohio State fans in any area where college football is even slightly relevant to the culture. Whenever you see one of those fanbases take over a stadium, you have to ask yourself how many of them are locals.

LSU had the chiefs running back in Edwards-Helaire too that year. Cant remember if JJ was on the team too but my intuition says yes. I dont want to look it up and pretend I know.

Bad teams don't sell tickets so there are generally a lot for visiting fans to buy. What then happens is the price of the tickets goes up and the home team fans will sell their tickets to make money. It gets really bad when a top 10 team plays a really bad team that is really close.

In American sports you don't get allocation. You have your season ticket holders and that's it, everything else is first come first serve. The only difference in College Football and Basketball you have a student section that only students of the university can sit in.

Born in Norfolk, Nebraska. Our team is the Nebraska Cornhuskers but pretty much go by huskers. Fun fact, back in the the early 1900’s I think the team was called the Nebraska Bugeaters I’m guessing because of the dust bowl because their were no crops to eat so a lot of people had to live off bugs. I’m glad they changed the name.

I was going to riot if Nebraska wasn’t on here too. We’ve sucked for the better part of the last 25 years and we still take over teams stadiums. We also have the longest sellout streak in history at over 60 years and our stadium seats 90,000+ and the town is only 300,000 people.

All SEC schools travel well. I'm a TN Vol fan & we go everywhere, they go. Most SEC schools send 10,000 tickets to the visiting team. But, you can always find other tickets on line, you will pay good money for them. Would love to have you visit our stadium

Also, everyone wants to beat Notre Dame since they are the bluest of blue bloods and perhaps the all time face of college football and the most traditional powerhouse program. So fans get hyped when their team is playing them for the chance of seeing them beat them in person, especially if they have never/rarely played there. Great watching my Sun Devils beat them several years back 🏈

Although the Ohio St Buckleyes fans do travel well i imagine a great deal of those fans were locals. Ohio st is amongst 10 or so teams in college football that have a national following. There will be pockets of their fans in the biggest cities and states across the country
