When I was in high school my freshmen year I had a surprisingly good year in LF. Hit over .350, and I was really good in the field. All I wanted to do was go to Duke. Then I broke my elbow playing backyard football and I can’t even swing a bat right even now 10 years later. But I’m not gonna lie I probably would’ve been hard headed about going to Duke or Charlotte only lol

Matt your videos are so helpful for choose if college schools to play at. I never realized how hard it was to play college baseball until I saw these videos. Also can you make a video to help catchers het from squatting to throwing it down quicker if you know what I mean??

OK.....so what's the next step? So we have this list, what do I do with it? How do you go about making yourself known to these schools?

Another great video, thanks! Once a list is created, with schools across divisions, when evaluating from an athletic perspective would you suggest research to include a teams current roster? That is to say that if you are a catcher would a team that has 4 catchers slated to return as upper class men the following season be moved down your target list. I know you can never account for player movement or the other players being recruited for the following season(s) but is this something that you would factor in when making a decision? Thanks

Obviously. Why would you go to a school with 4 catchers? If you decide to choose a d1 school with 4 catchers over a d3 school where you’d be starting right away, you’ll just transfer to a smaller school once you realize college baseball doesn’t actually matter and no one cares you went d1, especially when you’re sitting the bench.

Yes definitely part of the process. Sometimes can be tough though. You may be a better option than what they have and they still may want to recruit you...and it’s tough to tell that just by looking at roster. Thanks for watching!

John Jacob great points. I guess I was more curious as to how much information you get from examining the roster knowing that there are variables with player movement of current players as well as new recruits. Totally agree with your point about playing right away at D3 versus being a 4th catcher at a D1. Really goes back to a significant point that Matt made in the video, look for a good fit as opposed to forcing a fit with D1 blinders on.

High school usually doesn't help much. They may academically, but not athletically. Thanks for watching!

Maybe I'm just naive but I would think that it's not the school, it's the player. A stud player in a 'lesser' school will probably get more attention than a mediocre player in a more prestigious school.

Two more things to consider. Is playing baseball at ANY LEVEL consistent with your academic and career goals? For example, playing a D-1 sport will delay your admission to medical school as much as two years as you do not have the time to build up a resume of career related experiences that most medical schools expect in a candidate. Also, will the coaches at the program actually allow you to take a rigorous academic program that might interfere with your athletic schedules. I have seen coaches blow a gasket when a kid has to take certain classes during the season. This is generally not an issue at a D-3 or an Ivy League school where the concept of a STUDENT-athlete is taken seriously. I was looking at the media guide of a very successful D-1 softball program last week. I was VERY DISCOURAGED that the majority of the seniors in that program were listed as being "undecided" on their major or "general studies." It gives me the impression that the player is unprepared for the end of her career.
