I started collecting PSP stuff around 2018 or so and I'm really glad that I did. I personally own a very clean 1000, 3000 and Street model PSP. The consoles themselves are very nice and it's always fun uncovering hidden gems in the PSP's sorely overlooked library of games. My favorite part of my PSP collection is my complete set of Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force games. Yes, even the ultra-rare English version of Tag Force 3 and Japanese version of Tag Force 6. I got them all awhile back and the prices for them individually have gone WAY up since then. There are plenty of other PSP titles that are really fun to have, both cheap and expensive which makes PSP collecting something of an adventure. You just never know what you're going to find.

That's awesome stuff! I definitely don't have anything too crazy. The most expensive games in my PSP collection are the two persona games. But that's what I love about the PSP game library- the fact it IS so sorely overlooked and usually very affordable. I'm always discovering new games that look interesting and unique for this system. Probably more-so than any other system at the moment. Just a super fun system to discover things on! I'm hoping the prices don't shoot up too quickly since I have a LOT of shopping to do for this system, haha!

@@Gloryboyquan Spec wise absolutely. The Vita is the superior handheld by the lone fact that it can "technically" play all PSP games. This is especially handy on the PSTV, being able to scale PSP games on the big screen quite nicely while using a DualShock 4 for control. A very nifty and convenient setup for sure. That being said, I would still rather play PSP games on an actual PSP whether on the go or on the big screen with component cables and a good upscaler simply because I want to play physical UMD's. An ability that's not present on the Vita or PSTV. This isn't a knock on the Vita of course though, UMD's have their own drawbacks to consider and the number of people who feel the same as myself are probably very few. I just happen to be one of those few who enjoy collecting and playing legit UMD games on original hardware. To your credit, if I wanted to play a PSP game that might have a fan translation or some kind of homebrew hack I'd throw it onto my PSTV instead of my PSP since its already digital only and the PSTV would handle it much better.

I actually picked up my PSP 2001 console from my old neighbors who also sold me a GBA micro for $5 at their garage sale about 5 years ago. PSP was $15. Came with a few crappy games that I instantly sold. I almost sold the console multiple times because I wasn’t a handheld gamer at all. Well that all recently changed when I finally decided to buy a Sega Game Gear to finish my Sega console collection. After doing research I decided to do a screen mod and was really impressed! I’ve been having a blast collecting for the GG and have purchased a standard GBA instead of my SP model (for comfort) to do the same thing! It got me wondering also about my PSP and I’m glad I never sold it! I’ve acquired a handful of PSP games from thrift stores only, but managed to score a few decent ones including God of War! I just found out that the first Star Ocean was released in English for the PSP and now I have to own it since the second one was one of my favorites when I was younger. Definitely excited to dig in, hopefully before it’s too late with price increases…

20 dollars for.a PSP and GBA Micro! WOW! I would love to get a gameboy micro one day. I love the game gear! I'd actually bring mine on the bus quite often. Sonic Drift 2 is a GEM. Unfortunately the capacitors just went bad on mine so I have to fix those. Might look into modding the screen... I also really want to mod a regular GBA because my SP cramps my hands too much! That's so great that it kind of went full circle like that! I've actually never played any of the God of Wars, but I know the PSP has a couple so I may have to check those out. And yea! Star Ocean on the PSP also got a port to the Eshop if you didn't know! That's where I played it so I haven't picked up the original PSP version yet!

Final fantasy tactics and ogres tactics are the best tactics games ever! You can play psp multiplayer games with the PSVita! The only bad thing about the video output of the psp is that you won't be able to use a CRT TV but if you mod or get a hdmi to vga adapter you can either play on pc crt or with a jailbreak ps3 thru component cables to a CRT TV. Traded a buddy of mine some things for his PSP 1000 and Kingdom Hearts, Crisis Core FF VII, and Dissidia FF. Have been enjoying the experience immensely so far, the PSP was a system I basically ignored my entire teenage and young adult life in favor of everything else Nintendo. But I absolutely love handhelds so was excited when my friend said he wanted to trade. Pretty much immediately soft modded to run home brew and play roms on the memory stick. Besides the benefits of slightly better battery performance from not activating the UMD drive and slightly better loading times, along with my more minimalist lifestyle - so a smaller collection of physical things - I absolutely despise the state of the secondary market. And I say this as someone who owns plenty of other high value games from over the years, like all my Pokémon titles. I just believe paying someone these ridiculous prices for aging hardware that is only degrading with time is bonkers. But I have been really enjoying sharing these gaming experiences with other hobbyists and my friends as I show them about all I’ve learned when it comes to modding all my systems.

I've heard the PSP really is one of the best systems to mod. I would love to do that with a PSP GO at some point. There's also something a lot more "connecting" with having a smaller collection of physical games for the system. I definitely prefer physical collecting, but only buy games I plan to play. Therefor most of my collections are pretty curated (except for my switch lol). The market really does suck. I love how big the gaming community has grown, but as is the result of demand... so has prices. But it is really refreshing to meet other people who are not all obsessed with "value", but rather, the games/hobby itself. That's what ultimately keeps me interested in this community! You've inspired me to go back to the original and look at some of the differences you mentioned!

@@32bitmusician Thanks for the reply! The hospital dungeon music from the original is quite something: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fq5mzpKtn6fcc8o.html To anyone reading this, the PSP version is the more complete of the two for reasons mentioned in this video, but there are some smaller things that draw me more to the original. The world map in the original is pretty ancient-looking, but I must admit the look and feel of it reminds me of games in the 90s, which tend to elicit a lot more nostalgia for me. The new version adds some more contemporary-type music seen in the newer Persona titles, which in my opinion doesn't really capture the atmosphere as well as the original did, though that isn't to say the music is bad by any measure.

@@32bitmusician Haha. Switch is my favorite modern system to collect for. I have about 102 RPGs for it. Pretty cool you have the Personas. I have the Final Fantasy IV and I got it for 18 bucks on amazon because of a glitch (was in my watchlist and the price went from 64 to 18 for like twenty minutes). It was advertised as new but definitely was a reseal; but not a big deal given the cost. My advice for psp: I stopped using physical UMDs (still collect). If one system really benefits from digital versions vs physical, it is the psp. The loading time difference is night and day (tactics is so slow on UMD). Plus they are noisy. So a nice middle ground if you have a hacked psp is to rip the UMDs you own to your system so you still feel they are your games, but get all the benefit of load times and no noise. Moreover, less wear on expensive specimens.

UMD is useless nowadays and all disc based consoles' and handheld games will be useless except for collecting and novelty. But a modified system will be worth more than a stock one, unless CIB and New or sealed. Also the price hikes are due to modifying them or any console for that matter. I will have to mention alot of people had PSPs and when they stopped using them the PSP got the stigma of being a bad handheld compared to Nintendo due to having the UMD and scratched discs and proprietary memory. Alot of shops didn't even carry PSP because it was considered a big shovelware mess and the consoles were always thrashed. Now since COVID and the popularity of modifying consoles the PSP was given another look through. They was already a PSP modding scene but it's grown immensely since COVID. This all had more less of this effect due to the KZreadrs showcasing collections and modifying them, and fixing them.

@@32bitmusicianThat platform has always had its handful of expensive titles, but absolutely nothing suggests that you’re going to be looking at $60 for a copy of Patapon or LocoRoco, especially not within the next year. That’s wild. In fact, they’ve actually lost value since 2020. Check the history for both Persona and Persona 2 on Price Charting for CiB copies. They’ve been dropping since and have been settled for a while. There’s nothing driving this demand. Nothing except other collectors shouting of an imminent gold rush and self fulfilling their own prophecy. Game Gear games are still relatively cheap. Original Xbox games are still relatively cheap. There’s a reason for that. Those consoles don’t penetrate the broader cultural zeitgeist. I mean, the appeal for the PSP at the time was PS2-like games but portable and it was a bad pitch then. Stuff like Ratchet and Clank, Liberty City Stories, Syphon Filter were all deeply compromised attempts at creating a console-like experiences on the go. Who is excited about that? I love the PSP and even I can see that the platform is only really valuable to folks that were always interested in what it was offering. The PSP is a niche in a niche hobby.
