Collapsing in Public - The Bystander Effect (Social Experiment)

We wanted to investigate the bystander effect by having a person sit and lay on some stairways in a shopping mall. The purpose of this experiment was to see if any people passing by would approach and help this person.
Thank you for watching.

@@aphradite321 I'm thinking it's strange somone goes to sleep in a shopping centre unless they maybe have a special medical condition. We may deem it a bad pose and the bystanders in the mall just looked at her for a moment before moving on and that may tell us something about the bystander effect. The question is not so much in the pose, in my opinion, as it is wether people arrive to themselfes check out her condition, although certaintly appearance matters. But the collapsed person, her, was the only one lying on the stair which make her an exception; she breaks the norms and no one comes perhaps just because most bystanders would probably interpret the stance as "she's acting weird, but she looks okay." Still, I mean, she might have needed help, and that might in fact help us understand how the bystander effect works.

Psychologists call it 'situational ambiguity' or basic confusion. In the vid people dont really help because they dont kbow whats going on or how to help. This is a problem and leads to many peoples deaths in broad daylight since no one takes action to help the victim.

I learned about this through personal experience. I sometimes had asthma attacks when I was at the university. People saw me colapse. I was walking to class surrounded by hundreds of students and teachers. My wheezing and shallow breathing should have been a sign I was in trouble. My vision was blurry, my chest hurt and I felt like there was a fog around my brain making it hard to think. On one occasion, I was on the ground when I remembered my inhaler. As I moved to get it, I touched someone's leg by mistake. She said, "I'm sorry." as she hurried away.I hate knowing that people will not be there for me if I need them. This might not be the best version of this experiment, but the bystander effect is a real thing. The acting could have been Oscar worthy, and I doubt anyone would have offered to help.

Same, I had an asthma attack during sports at school. I was on the ground, gasping for air, blurry vision and trying to graps something. I heard people running past me, sope even said "get up!". Luckily my best friend at that time was also here with her class and she saw me, screamed and went to get my inhaler. Aftee her scream I could feel people coming seeing me. If my bf wasn't there, I would have died that day... The bystander effect can be soooo dangerous for the victim.

That's horrible😥 If you can, you need to directly ask people for help and people often do help if they are asked directly and cannot pretend they don't see you. The same counts for when you see something like this happen, if you don't feel confident helping yourself, just speak. Alternatively, once you start helping someone, people should also be more likely to stop and help.

Yeah, that's true. But let's be more realistic. What if you were feeling very tired and unwell? You'd try to sit on a bench, or on the stairs. But like many people say, it may let her look like she's asleep. So it's hard to deduce whether the person is in trouble or not. I guess people should just pay more attention?

Stop thinking everybody is somebody else’s responsibly. Nobody is bad for not wanting to do something. Not everybody is looking tone social people just like minding there own problems and business.

Not sure why no one intervened. If this was somewhere like say outside, I could understand. I mean in big cities there's homeless people, drug-addicts, and drunks flopped over on the streets occasionally. You get used to seeing it so you don't intervene. And beside's sometimes those kinds of people get right nasty and try to verbally/physically attack you. But inside a shopping mall? You don't see that kind of thing. I'd be concerned if I saw someone flopped over, even if they appeared to be sleeping. That's not normal. That's not something to see on a day to day basis.

Totally. I have a condition that causes low blood pressure and I've fainted or almost fainted several times in public. It makes me stumble around half-conscious and I can appear drunk when I'm 'about to go'. Could be a diabetic attack that makes them stumble and 'look asleep'. People should not assume anyone is drunk as there are several medical conditions that can make you look like you are sleeping. And if someone is drunk, then maybe they could need an ambulance too to help them out.

My father died of a massive heart attack. It was 2 days before Christmas. He had gone out to by groceries for Christmas dinner. When he got home he went out to the garden. I found him dead there. I called an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital, but it was too late. If it had happened an hour earlier in the the grocery store or parking lot I am afraid this would have happened. He probably would have thought to be a old drunk man and left there.

There is an incredible book out now about why we do and do not act in these situations, called 'Why We Act; Turning Bystanders into Moral Rebels'. In this situation in thr vid, people are most likely not helping because of what psychologists call 'situational ambiguity'. People arent sure of whats goin on and dont know how to act. However, you should call 911 because you could really be saving somebodys life. Too many accounts of victims needing help sutrounded by tons of people and no one intervenes. Often the victims even die in broad daylight because no one thinks to help.
