2. SOT Robert Downe, director: Cape Town has weather that are more like California 60, 70 years ago than anywhere in California. It's both the weather and the physical layout of places like Lo'Burg of Long Beach, Lagoona beach, places which it would be impossible to film in in California now, because they are so heavily built, they'd be unrecognisable

SOT Salma Hayek: It's psychologically very complicated, this lovestory and it happens in a very specific time, which is the 30s in California, where people were more racist and it was not accepted, a relationship between Mexicans, with nothing else that was not Mecican. in this case with an Italian. They didn't like the Italian's either but they didn't like the Mexicans even worse, so that makes it a little different.'
journalist: How do you find filming in South Africa?
'I love it here. It's really nice. The weather is great, but it's such a beautiful country, the light is different than anything i've seen and i really enjoy the nature. It's very inspiring, so it really helps'
journalist: Was it a hard role to play?
SOT Salma Hayek: 'yes and no. It is very challenging role , probably one of the most courageous roles i've done, but at the same time, it has not been hard because it's very well written and I work really well with Colin, I enjoy fighting with him in the scenes, it's always great fun coming to work and there's a great spirit in the set and I think we understand the characters rally well and we get to play a lot and Robert lets us play so it's been fun
journalist: it's a departure from your last few roles?
6. SOT Colin Farrell: Yes I suppose a bit of a break from the norm for the past few gigs, but i've been part of it for four years. Four years ago I met Robert for the first time and it's just nice to be doing it after so much f**cking talk, and wondering was it going to happen and Robert's been on it for an even longer time but ...It's different. The characters are as vicious as they are in nature at times, there's a gentleness to them, and a certain amount of thought as humans, even if they don't realise it themselves, that i'm not used to getting the chance to explore, so in that way it's nice and the script is phenomenal.'
journalist: what's it like working with Salma?
SOT Colin Farrell: 'painful, painful. The thing is i've a job, i'm so lucky to have, you wake up every morning and think god i'm lucky and i'm happy to go to work. Every day I get my teeth pulled, she's a dream, an absolute dream, just playing off her and she brings such a gentility to her character that could so easily just be nasty and vicious . She's something of a a caged animal Camilla and Salma, talking in w***ker actor terms, gives her so many dimentions. It just leads to such a multi-layered character. i just love acting with her. She's great.'
journalist: will you be coming back to South Africa
'i'm something of a bit of a gypsie. I go where the work is. I've had a great time here. I'd come back in a flash.
FIREY ROMANCE FOR FARRELL AND HAYEK
Romantic drama 'Ask The Dust', a Cruise/Wagner production, is currently being shot in Cape Town, South Africa.
Directed by academy award winning screenwriter Robert Towne the script was adapted from John Fante's acclaimed novel of the same title. Towne is famed for writing award winning screenplays for 'Chinatown', 'Shampoo' and the 'The Firm'.
Fans will have to wait a while before they see the end results as 'Ask The Dusk' is not due for release in the US until December 2005.
