Coleman 237

The legendary Coleman 237 is a 500 candle power beast of a lantern that runs on kerosene or coleman fuel. They don't make em like they used to

    I found a 1948 237 Empire lantern with a nickel font in a Thrift Store last week in Ontario. Super Cool, a top class find.

    You have a real winner! Take it apart and rub out everything but the vent with Mothers Mag Polish. It does a great job on painted surfaces too. Its a lot of hand massaging but it will come out looking nearly new again. Walmart and other places sell it.

    they are out there...problem is the prices on these things have gone mental. Collecting for Coleman has gotten almost as expensive as my knife and gun addiction. It used to be my cheap hobby. Not so much anymore.

    +XxKnivesNGunsxX Well while looking I came upon a 242b that I picked up tonight and I can hardly wait to get it running. I see that you have a video if a 242 so I'm gonna check that out. I also made contact with Mike - thanks for making me aware of him as that'll be a great resource! atb!

    Awesome looking 237. I have one just like it except the vent on mine has seen lots of usage. I also have 2 other 237's as well. By far one of my favorite models. P.S. I'm also a young guy as well! I'm just 15!

    Demonic Darkness awesome lol...we need more youngins to take in the hobby. This is probably my most prized lantern I have others worth more but the 237 is just so special. They are so reliable in beautiful in my opinion one of coleman's best.

    They don't put out lanterns like this because people have become used to cheap disposable junk that works for a while and then you through it away and get another piece of crap. People today would refuse to pay what it cost to produce fine quality durable goods that last several lifetimes with a little care. You get what you pay for. Fine video by the way.

    237's are sick. I run petromax mantles on mine. Does yours have the ceramic burner? The 237 has a .0085 tip, the 639 has .008, so it does move more fuel. The old cast manifolds seal better making them burn cleaner than the new stamped ones. I'm sure the huge genni helps too.

    Yep they are noticeably brighter. Burn with less smell and are genuinely good looking. Not saying 639s aren't cause they are but these are really good looking lanterns

    I know old video, I'm running the 237 in my off grid cabin. Anybody know if I can run diesel fuel in it? Having problems finding kerosene lately a decent price

    Was the 639 an improvement over the 237 or was it like the 220 series that followed the 220F (lower quality cheaper production lantern)?

  • @XxKnivesNGunsxX

    @XxKnivesNGunsxX

    Well their is no doubt the 639 was a cheaper lantern to make. Stamping is almost always cheaper than casting. And the 237 has ALOT of brass. Their are certain things I like better about the 237 and their are certain things I like better about the 639. I like the robustness of the 237. It feels nigh unbreakable and it possesses a certain ascetic quality that is appealing. At the same time it's heavy as all get out. The 639 is much lighter for carrying around. Also the 237 vent design concentrated the heat up at the top which really does a number kn them. It's hard to find a 237 with a nice vent for that reason. The 639 vent is squat and wide and does a better job dispersing heat therefore their vents tend to alway be at least decent if not perfect. The 237 with that super heavy duty burner frame really tends to burn very bright and light bulb steady. Whereas the 639 tends to have a little flicker( older ones less so than newer ones) snd are prone to leaks around the crimps of the frames that can cause little pulses and whatnot. The upside to this is the 639 preheat really quick even when cold Whereas the 237 takes at least 1 full or sometimes 2 preheats to really get up and running well. So I suppose to answer your questions. Yes the the 639 was an improvement....and well no the 639 was just a cheaper lantern for coleman to make

    @@XxKnivesNGunsxX Thank you. I think like you do as I know the 220 series of lanterns very well and see their de-evolution as you do the 237 to 639. We are of a like mind.

    +steve young I have 2 639s. one was made in 73 and has a nickel fount and has the old style valve. the newer one I got no more than 4 years ago and is still in production today. there are five models of 639. the two older versions with the old valves are simply known as 639s. the newer style with the newer valves started as the 639A. To be completely honest I can tell no difference other than name between the 639A, B, or C. in my opinion all of them are well built and will last a lifetime with minor care.
