Coleman 237 lantern maintenance failure???

Doing some routine maintenance on a 237 kerosene lantern generator and I break the spring while heating it with a torch to burn off the carbon buildup.
I generally lay it on a flat piece of steel but this time I heard it up to get a better camera view and ended up breaking it in half.
After reassembling the lantern the generator exploded during preheat.

Wow! That's not good! We kinda forget that those things are really just a little bomb in essence. Glad you didn't get hurt.

Thank you sir. Yeah these things are full of a highly flammable gas and under a bit of pressure. You can never be to careful. God bless.

Glad you’re ok brother! As another mentioned, your pricker was up during preheat. I seen another video made a year or more ago on KZread where a gentleman was preheating his 237 generator with the pricker tip up and it popped in about the same location as yours. I’m just thankful you’re ok! Stay safe 🙏🏻

I appreciate it my friend. I guess I just wasn't paying attention. It's all good now. I got a new generator from opc for a reasonable price. Thank you and God bless.

That is in the weakest part of the tube for sure. Don't know what caused the pressure build up but it took the path of least resistance out.

There was a couple of deep scratches in the generator and I had the tip cleaner raised in the up position which closes off the generator and the preheat gets really hot causing pressure to build up and along with the deep scratches it found the weakest spot. The perfect combination. Love ya. Take care.

Thanks my friend. Kerosene isn't nearly as flammable as Coleman fuel. You have to get it much hotter to ignite without a wick. Got lucky and it blew out the flames from the preheat. God bless

I don't personally know - but have read that the cleaning tip must be down to preheat or it could blow up - I believe I see yours is up

Makes perfect sense. I could build up too much pressure. Didn't even think about this. Didn't even realize it was up. Thanks for the information. God bless.

This was my oversight. I had the cleaning lever in the up position during the preheat and the pressure had no way of escaping causing it to blow out the side. Lucky a replacement generator was still available at a reasonable price. Thanks for watching and God bless.

@@cajuncookone Just subbed your channel. I wasn't aware you could burn kerosene in the m1950. The vaporize is easy enough to get apart and clean the kerosene residue out once in a while. Good to know you can burn it. More options are always a good thing.

@@BluegrassBushcraft the key was using low pressure 4 to 5 pumps. Any more and you get yellow burst of flames. I would use kerosene in a hard pinch, but would prefer to use CF or gasoline.

Been heating and quenching these things for years with no issues until now. I did notice there was a couple of scratches in the brass. I'm guessing one of them along with the softened brass was just a little too much. I ordered another from ocp and it arrived yesterday evening. Hope all is well. God bless.

  • @BluegrassBushcraft

Sounds like the fuel pickup tube is in need of a cleaning. Turn it upside down and shake it and try lighting it again. It should light but burn out after the fuel burns out of the pickup tube. This involves a complete teardown to get it out.
