No joke I have been clean for 3+ years. I did it for my daughter. I was taking 150mg of Methadone for 6 years and 3 grams of tar. Plus 11-13 mg of xanax. I quit cold Turkey. I died from it and got brought back to life I was in withdrawal from all these substances took 9 weeks especially from the methadone. I went hell then died then wake up in hell again for 2 months. I did it all because I felt that if I didnt that I wouldn't be able to be there for my daughter and the truth is my daughters love gave me the strength. She is my miracle child that I believe God sent to help me be better person for my daughter, myself, my family, and friends. I am crying writing this comment. People who never went through this will never know the hell. It's not just stop taking it.... :/

I shared my story here w some1 who asked.I still don't see what I achieved but when I can go away on vacation and not have liquid handcuffs after being in the hospital for so many months morphine and pills I was addicted?(thanx 4 telling me that happen!) And they keep you on methadone forever! thank God it wasn't my thing LOL it's been a few years now as well congrats! He want to do it for yourself but it does help line you have any incentive like your daughter.

Xanax and Benzos etc withdrawals can kill you but no one has ever died off an opiate withdrawal no matter what dose it’s impossible to die from it mix it with Benzos it becomes very deadly

Lost my brother Jeff to a morphine overdose, within a year I was addicted to oxy. Took me several years to get clean but 5 years later I’m 100% sober.

I'm so proud of you and don't even know you. I know how addiction affects the mind and the body, have been on prescribed opiates since I was 16 but never heroin, so I won't pretend that I know how you feel. I hope that you are still sober, but if not, it's just a bump in the road...NOT A FAILURE! Sidenote: In my humble opinion those gentleman who have struggled with addiction are some of the best men out there. Because that takes courage, determination, resolve, and dedication. Those are very attractive qualities in a man.

I feel for these people 😢 my brother has gone more than 6 times through this it's absolutely unbearable and they did not give him anything. Cold Turkey... I myself have been using Suboxone for pain control of my medical condition. Luckily I got the chance to get surgery two times so pain is now mostly gone. I have used Suboxone for almost two years and have been tapering slowly to 1/8th since 2 days ago. I am now without and God this is hard, heart palpitations, vomiting, shivering like hell, incredible migraines... this has been hard, I can't imagine what my brother and these people go through often cold turkey and they used often different and strong opioids in large dosis 😢 may you all find peace and feel good soon. My perspective on addicts has change 180 degrees, they are absolute victims

+eric Stoenescu Yeah very true, and most of the country has come along, and now for minor drug possession charges most courts will refer an addict to treatment. So, what happens then? Addictions treatment services start popping up all over the place, providing one type of treatment or the other. Addicts will be sent to these programs by the courts instead of jail. Once an addict is involved in the treatment program they will generally not have much of a say in what treatment they get, having to go to many group therapy sessions, and a one or two individual sessions, with a recommendation to attend 12 step self help groups. This treatment works for some, but for a vast majority does not, and when this form of treatment is unsuccessful the addict will be sent to jail, eventually released, and the cycle starts again, which is great for the treatment program in the area they have a nonstop flow of money, with 0 obligation to prove their treatment works. A vast majority of society is either uninformed or misinformed about what addiction is. From a young age many of us have been taught that drugs are bad, without really knowing what their effects are, or what addiction to them looks like. The reality is different drugs cause dependence for different reasons, acting on different brain chemicals, with different withdrawal symptoms, that last for varying amounts of time, in multiple stages. Compound this with the fact that everyone's brain and body chemistry are different and you have a disorder (or several disorders) that can be extremely difficult to treat. All of these factors, combined with our country's failed policies have built up over the last century, transforming into the enormous prison/healthcare/industrial machine that we see today. This is not to say that the current forms of treatment we commonly see today should be abandoned. Instead it needs to be expanded upon, with the focus being on the patient rather than the group. As many different options of treatment should be made available to the patient as possible, with the patient being able to make the decision of what to engage in, Instead of a team of doctors, and counselors deciding for the patient what is best for them. The main goal of recovery is to live life on it's own terms. Addicts are slaves to their drugs, and the routines required to obtain them. When treatment is mandated as an alternative to jail in cases of possession of small quantities of drugs the cycle of being controlled by external forces continues. When a treatment center only offers one type of treatment, and requires the addict to engage in forms of treatment that he or she does not believe are helpful, the cycle continues. It is my belief that from the start addicts should be empowered to be masters of their own destinies, as all healthy adults are, and shown that they no longer have to live a hollow existence of chasing drugs. The current situation does not do that, the current situation does not give individuals the choice of how they wish to live. Lastly there is an issue of availability of different treatments, some old, some new, some unconventional, and some controversial. There are many reasons for why some areas have less options available than others. Sometimes it has to do with a lack of specialists in an area, and other times governmental regulations originally intended to help prevent drug abuse have become a double edged sword in that they also make some forms of treatment more difficult to obtain.

10 days clean! Feeling even more grateful now that I’ve been able to have treatment, many people do not get that much needed opportunity. And AA meetings are always an amazing option to give you constant support and principles to follow that help you live clean and sober

I fell into the trap. Years of prescribed opiates, due to pain. Then constantly hearing that heroin is plentiful, cheap. I sought it, and sure enough, cheap and plentiful. I went thru cold turkey hell, glad to, I will *never* dance with the dragon again!

There are a few things that have been proven to have a positive effect when it comes to drug policy: * Substitution programs (ie methadone, subuxone, subutex programs). These programs have a much higher success rate than "drug free" treatment programs. * Medical marijuana (States that have legalised medical marijuana have 25% less overdoses from prescription painkillers than other states. Probably because people use marijuana to treat their pain instead of painkillers) * Naloxone/Narcan programs and making Narcan redily available - Massachusetts Narcan program has significantly reduced fatal overdoses. New York state recently made Narcan prescription-free. * Giving drug users treatment instead of prison/jail-time. * Injection rooms - Injection rooms significantly lower overdose rates, because users inject wiith medical personell nearby. It may seem counterproductive to "help users continue using", but many of the people who visit injection facilities eventually end up seeking treatment. These injection facilities also reduce public injection and reduce the amount of dirty needles that get littered in public places.

JoelMatton I agree man... there’s such a stigma around suboxone like it’s a bad thing but like all drugs you can abuse it or you can use it for it’s intended purposes... I’ve been on suboxone now for almost 3 years and it completely changed my life. I never even think of doing heroin. I just graduated college with my masters degree in involved in AA and my church and I have a full time job. Say what you want about drug replacement therapies but I know I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without it.

Marijuana doesn’t cure pain anymore than opiates do. They mask the pain if anything at all. Research has shown time and again that the actual THC has almost no use, but the CBD has shown to be helpful in numerous areas while still having negative attributions, as well.

Some of those injection rooms will also test your dope for you now to find out if it contains fentanyl so you can adjust your amount accordingly, which prevents a huge amount of overdoses.

This was good. Too bad there aren't more programs for drug addicts. I used to use drugs myself and spent 8 years in federal prison on drug and gun charges.

I feel for your brother. I pray to God that he relieves your suffering. In the 80s, I used to allow weed at parties but the weed was different and turned kids into lazy bums who only cared about the next party. Being that bad I was more scared of stronger drugs “This is your brain on drugs.” Actually worked, for me. I told my girlfriend she couldn’t smoke weed. Then in the 90s the patient’s bill of rights was created and Dr‘s controlled pain with opiates. abuses like pill mills was causing an extra 5000 deaths per year. So the government in all their wisdom used an elephant to go after a mouse, and in the process they started going after and arresting doctors. They illegally inserted them selves into the doctor. Patient relationship. Doctors were terrified of prescribing opioids anymore. The patients were dumped on pain management clinics which under prescribed. So they started using fentanyl and heroin to control the pain. Last year 105,000 people died of overdoses directly caused by the government disastrous heavy hand. Now, they are adding fentanyl to other drugs like marijuana and cocaine, to make them more addictive and increase sales. The government is responsible for the extra 100,000 people, actually extra 1 million people for the past 20 years, all those kids, and all those grieving mothers. And finally they owe me, for the loss of my cousin. we believe my cousin was celebrating the creation of his new business, and he took some cocaine laced with fentanyl, and he died.😢 Mommas tell your kids they are addicted the first time because they will never forget that intense feeling of the pain leaving their body if they take opioids and for the rest of their life the will be tormented every time they are in pain. they will inevitably become dependent and when they run out they will suffer in hell every second of minutes that last hours on and on for days. Stay away from opoids and crack they are guaranteed death kiddos. ☠️

@@kid4375 it’s suppose to be an opioid blocker, you start off with taking pills to see how your body reacts to it, and I think then they recommend injections, I’m pretty sure in your butt. You get it once or month or something like that. If you do decide to use an opioid it blocks you from feeling the full effect. So if you use while on it, it’s just a waste of money, you feel nothing. Hope that helps

I know... all these tough guys that think drugs are biased, sexist and racist and only make the "low lifes" their victim... there's just as many "rich white folk" that are addicted. Difference is, they have more to fund their habit, they have better means of hiding the addiction... The way opiates are now a days, I can say with a bit of certainty that the "tough guys" that have so much "self control and discipline" have close friends or even family that have a problem... and they themselves are just as liable to fall victim. Opiates don't give a rat's ass who you are... rich, poor, white, black, man, woman, child.... it will take ANYONE to see the gates pits of Hell.

Nabiya Anyone who pulls the race card is a racist. I know white people who have got 40 years for drug charges. If you are a repeat offender you can expect a long sentence. Quit your crying in Thailand they execute you for drug charges but if you are a American you get out in 3 months to 3 years. Those sentences are transferred to the US also you only sit in Thai prison a couple months.

Im about to go do 2 years because ive been on probation and house arrest because of driving with a suspended liscence that got suspended because of heroin... Sucks.. I never hurt anyone except myself or my family.. I have a good job and a good family and a good support system and I have been clean for the last 4 months and counting.. But since I fucked up before getting caught with my drug of choice even though im clean and doing good I have to go pay my "debt to society"... 2 years.. Thats a long time.. I feel like no one is going to wait for me, my girlfriend isnt gonna wait for me etc... I have a month left of freedom... Fucking heroin took everything from me.. and I never hurt anyone except for myself and the people who care about me.. I honestly dont think I deserve to go to state prison for this..

@@francisdoran8992 Well, then tell me. I did time in Germany and we have a lot more commissary items than in the US. We basically had a convenience store, like 7/11,with cart shopping. And cigarettes are legal, so they are the prison currency. I had to pay serval boxes of tabacco for a little heroin. I wouldn't been able to keep/afford a serious addicton. You only earn about 10 bucks a day. Since I was in the methadone programm I could make a little extra. Tell me about your story, please!

Fir my frist 12 year I cared about nothing I did a lot of dirt. But my last 7 year I smartin up . I got out 2 years ago. And I have a hard time out here .these is a different world . pens here are not like where yiu from

This is actually quite encouraging! It is so great to see a program, even if it is not perfected yet, that has some glimmer of hope to work. All that it seems we need now is to expand upon what works and to cut back on the programs that don't.

The lack of treatment for those of us struggling with opioid and/or benzo addiction and withdrawal is disgraceful! 3 years clean Oct 9th, 10 year herion addiction, so many friends gone but I live on for them all.

Sadly drugs do make you feel powerful, calm and a sense of extacy. We look to drugs for relief instead of other human beings.

I was luck in my 10 year run to never od or withdrawal in county. I can't imagine detoxing in a cold, concrete jail.

@yagbos They dont sit and talk about how good getting high was, "moron". If you went to a meeting whether on the streets or in jail, NA or whatever program you'd see what actually goes on. It works. But only if you want it to. Meetings are a great way for addicts who TRULY want to get clean stay clean. Next time actually know what your talking about before saying some bullshit.

So happy I live in NYC. It's very easy to get City/State funded treatment here which I have used to change my life. I feel for these people. Jail is a hard place for detox or treatment.

One of the most stupid and persisting myths about drug addiction is that you can force an addict to get sober, you can't, if the addict doesn't want to get clean no matter what you do, he or she will relapse at the first opportunity; the second most stupid myth is that if you're have a full-blown addiction you can't quit overnight, withdrawal syndromes usually last for days and psychological symptoms can't last for years; perhaps the most idiotic myth is about 'interventions', they're annoying and useless and they have the worst outcomes.

I lived there for a year. Stunning, maintains a wholesome vibe, but getting pain meds there was easier than in California. I kind of feel like they did this to themselves. Not entirely but slightly. Handing out scripts like they were at one point, for everything (at least in Portsmouth) was shocking. I had been clean for months when I got a script of percs for an ear infection. Pretty good sized one, too.

Spencer Dias Not legal, but decriminaized. We treat it has a disease, instead of a crime... (at least in small doses) Anyone trying to sell will still be arrested. But if you consume and think you need help, you are free to ask for it in an institution without being scared of getting arrested...

Dude at the counter of that rehab was making memes when VICE rolled in.

My son was on heroin and lost a fortune, all spent on his addiction as it went out of control. There was also a huge emotional cost to the family as we struggled to find a way to help him whilst trying to deal with a feeling of being helpless. He went on detox twice but as with all addicts getting it out of the body is only the first battle, getting and keeping it out of the head is by far the biggest battle of all. He is now on the heroin substitute methadone and as of now cannot function without it as the physical aspects of withdrawal still controls his body. He is not the person he was, the happy laugh a minute person we knew is a thing of the past, it is heartbreaking to remember how his life used to be. I hope for all the people a way can soon be found to deal the effects of drug addiction.

I feel for you and your family, my family has gone through the same, my brother has been in jail about 6 times going cold turkey every time. Absolute horror and trauma for him and me and my family. I have been very sick myself with a lot of pain but I was lucky to have a solution and also have severe depression. I'am now 2 stopping from 1/8th of my suboxone dosage and with only that I feel I'm going through hell. Just imagine all the people like your son and my brother who go through much much worse. Please keep it up as a family, stay together, give your son a lot of love, hugs and compliments and hope for the future, I believe this is the only way to really get out of this hellish loop. I feel for you're family and really hope things are getting better now.❤

I love being a NH native since there's so much to love about the state, but it's clear we need to do more to help our brethren who are suffering.

Im from Manchester nh and the problem has just gotten worse. Literally a month ago i went for a walk on elm street and saw no less then 3 people sleeping on the ground in the middle of the day. I saw even more addicts walking around emaciated asking for money only to turn around and spend it on a fix. The problem is very deep here and a lot needs to be done about it, but the mayor refuses to acknowledge and address the issue

I live in NH, born and raised. In 2018, all mental health clinics and counselors in southern NH were booked dealing with addicts. Other mental illnesses were put on hold with long wait lists, pushed aside for the drug crisis. Besides drugs in specific cities, NH rocks! I highly recommend. Once you get to the mountains and north country, you don't find this problem. It's hard to be depressed in nature.

I'm a dispensing nurse here in Texas I wish you all the best, Methadone/Suboxone works really well used the correct way tapering slowly. I've seen so much success!!! With GOD all things are possible stay blessed in your recovery!!

You all really need to come .to to Mc.Dowell WV things are really bad here people are dieing right in front my face..My sister being one of them. We really need someone to help.Please think about the seriousness of all the people that we are losing ,,,,,, these people are someone's loved one. Thank you for even reading this.

+JJ I'm not sure if your question is genuine as it seems a little naive but I will assume it is. People get high on opiates because it is a pleasurable thing to do and because it takes away your stresses and problems for the time being. After a few days of continued use you become physically dependent on it so that if you stop you will be so sick and in so much pain you just cannot tolerate it and so you're forced to take more just to feel ok again. I don't recommend trying opiates for this obvious reason. Does this answer your question? If you want more details just ask.

It’s amazing that the focus of the treatment programs offered in these prisons is achieving “clean” time. An abstinence approach.....that is almost certain to end in a dangerous relapse when the patients leave prison. I think it is fairly well documented that substitution treatment is by far the most effective modal of care for opioid dependence.... it seems almost wilfully negligent on the part of those designing the programs for these unlucky prisoners.

Holy fuck!! 2-3 grams a day. Thats like $4-600 a day. I recently got help for my heroin habit, and i was only using a quarter gram a day. Glad i got help when i did...

Make sure you stay away from it too. It will not be the same if you go back.. Quarter of a gram is not going to be enough anymore. You will need more. I started the same way and I was doing 3 to 4 grams a day at the end. Prison was my only way out. Lost everything and I mean everything.. . In Boston a gram goes for about $40 bucks but believe me johnnyscifi, it will never be enough.. Stay clean and fight your hardest sto achieve your goals.

Been a herion addict for 12 years ago. I remember 12 years ago my doctor telling me i was over reacting about the addiction part.

I quit alcohol cold turkey 8 days ago, not a drop more, I'm going for 8 months, hopefully 8 years. Addiction of any type of substance sucks so hard

*IF YOU ARE LIKE ONE OF THESE GENTLEMAN WHO IS A RECOVERING ADDICT, PLEASE KNOW:* The counselor saying *"what are you going to do when you get out and there's no support for you anymore?"* *That's absurd especially for a DRUG REHABILITATION THERAPIST to say. There are Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings everywhere which are completely free.*That upsets me a lot, because when these gentleman are released they'll feel like *they have no support and that greatly increases the chance of relapse. Uggh.*

Heroin detoxes are 14 days max, prison does NOT aid anything for the root problemif anything it traumatises the inmates so much they retrun indefinitely

Good reporting vice....a well balanced and informative view of recovery..from both the healers/facilitators..and the "participants",and good knowledge dropped on trigger awareness...also really good to show a broad cross section of the many different types of people that this can happen to..addiction does not have a class system.does not differentiate..otherwise the rich could be buying and not dying..peace to ya'all😉🤔

A year sober on the inside is not the same as a year sober on the outside. The key is effective reentry planning with the inmate before and then after release.

Classic example of the justice system failing... Dude is in there over an original charge of stealing ONE marijuana plant. Then, bc he failed a urinalysis on parole, they sent him back. This is bullshit! He came in as an addict and a NON-VIOLENT OFFENDER. He was sent back to serve for the original charge. And then shockingly, starts using again in prison... WE ARE WAREHOUSING PEOPLE!! WHY IS THERE NO REHABILITATION IN PRISONS/JAILS??!!

You find things to do that make you happy. Go to meetings. Do not isolate yourself. Go to a clinic that will provide you with suboxone or methadone. Pray. Ask for help. Write. Know that you are worth it. Know that the drug is not your friend. Remind yourself of who you were and how your life was before you used. And if you’ve been on it for awhile you should know, your no longer enjoying it, you using to not be sick anymore, ask for help and don’t give up trying ever! You can do this, no matter how many times it take.. don’t give up erode the miracle happens love you ❤️🙏🏽

I spend my 2017 in rehab . I just graduated . 1 year sliver . Same thing happened to me I went to shop to buy cigarette I found old friend. And boom relapse . I own 3 cars and great job. Good friends. I lost all of it . After my relapse I lost my family trust . Now trying to stand up on my feet again by my self . 2 weeks clean. Really don't want to go back into darkness :( tired .

If someone walks into a treatment facility saying, "I want to get clean of heroin/fentanyl." That person should be admitted immediately. Strike while the iron is hot!

I have lost a lot of good friends because of drugs an I miss them so much I hope people will get clean soon there are far to many family members hurting because of the drugs my heart goes out to those families who have loved ones who have lost the battle God be with you all stay safe be strong an just say no to drugs

It's funny (interesting) about withdrawal, in that, when we get sick, like with the flu, and I am talking bad bad flu, or just sick sick, like for over a week, we get through it. We suffer greatly, but we do it, and we slowly get better. But when we start withdrawal, even before the real sickness begins, we cannot handle it. itWe cannot even go like 1 full day. Yes it's a different kind of pain, and it's bad bad bad. But if we know that just one shot will remove that pain, we want it so so bad. But that just delays the inevitable. The best way, for me, was methadone, then suboxone, lowering the dose slowly. It took me years to wean, but I did it right. I hope to never go back to H. I don't think I will, as it's been years, but it's always in us (me). Its kiss is it's poison, forever inside, wherever I go. Xoxoxo. Good luck all.

It's because its programmed into your mind as an addict. Which is why you get anxiety etc on how your going to get next fix. Like, you know that the only thing that'll take that feeling away in your mind constantly thinking about it and the physical side will all go away. You think il have this last one to get me better and strong again and then il be ready and strong enough to not have any more and come off it. Then u get sick again and repeat the cycle. Is like flu the physical side of it but like a deadly flu that u think if u dont treat it with a hit feels like your dying.

So how'd it go?

There were many that predicted this heroin overdose problem 10 years ago when the DEA and state governments started to heavily fight against the popular pharmaceuticals (hydrocodone and oxycodone, among other opioids). Did they really think everyone was just going to quit because the prices of pharmaceutical opioids skyrocketed? Now instead of having pharmaceutical grade pills that are clearly marked with their tested dosage, you have unknown quality heroin in various forms.

dick tracy I agree, but what I'm trying to say is that legitimate pharmaceuticals are almost never cut by the middle men that they go through to get to the end consumer. You know it is going to be 2mg, 5mg, 40mg, 80mg, etc of a specific chemical and only that chemical along with some filler/binders to hold together the pill. I do know that there were problems with fake OC80s that contained fentanyl, but I think it was pretty limited and most fake OC80s were just bunk instead.

dick tracy My original comment was mainly regarding overdose deaths. The issue that you are describing is a problem with the doctors and drug makers. They are the ones responsible for over prescribing opioids and benzodiazepines while understating their addiction potential for the last 15-20 years.

Back in 2010 I was in that prison, northern new hampshire correctional facility, and it SUCKED!!!

I had the flu one time and I wanted god to just take me I was miserable I can’t imagine these people going cold turkey and dealing with the symptoms

A flu is a walk in park ..u eat soups and rest and start to gt better ..wen u kick dope it's like it gts worse by the day depending on specifically wat opiate u was on weather longer life span such as methadone or short span such as herione among others long story short it's almost as ur in greif , AXIETY is off the roof which a flu doesn't give u panic attacks ..or a flu doesn't make u not sleep for days and days and nights ..I couldn't compare it to a flu

I remember the day working @ my dad's business had a headache and asked dad for a tylenol, he gave me a percocet 5mg without telling me what it was, I felt amazing, this later led to a novel worthy story that I typed but erased but the big pharmaceutical and gov should be ashamed

Why the fuck are the people that profit as much, if not MORE money than the oil industry, being cut out of this equation? There is a phenomenal amount of money that inevitably goes with the amount of drugs which enable this type of epidemic. Why is this not addressed?!

I never understood why addicts would get angry by sober people giving advice like “you have to feel the pain” like the woman at 8:30, until I became one.

I got opioid prescriptions for over 3 years (I have physical issues I was born with involving foot, ankle, knee, spine, etc). I never moved to heroin or anything because to *me* injecting myself with something is taboo - a BIG no-no. I'm not knocking addicts - believe me I know their plight - society needs to stop shunning people for addiction and find a way to *help* them..... incarceration isn't the first, immediate action.

I used to sell drugs to junkies before I was one and would let them shoot up at my house. I found it disgusting. I was talked into trying the needle and once crossing the line, for me, there was no going back. I guess my point is. ya never know what you're capable of. I never thought I'd end up here.

fuck,i work 3 part time jobs,dont smoke drink or do drugs,(eat fast food)(which is bad as drugs) i live day to day lucky if i pay rent on time i can only afford to eat every other day.one guy said he had too much money,other guy 400 a day habit.what the fuck.

Freddy Placencia well lets see,raised two kids on my own sent them to college the are not on drugs or in jail,they contribute to society,im a vet,been around the world,also have a college degree,working from the age of 14.over 50 and work two construction jobs which are both kind of slow now.so i am pissed.now you know.i also believe the government allows the drugs in the country as part of the control system.and prisons are big money.(for investors)

duck Lamb I'm a vet, too. Fought in 2 wars several times. I have a college degree, too. Ive held a full time job my entire life, and a good one at that. And I was a heroin addict for over 6 years. Not many people knew, most still don't, it those who did were shocked. Honestly, I'd be the last person You d expect to be an addit, but I am.

That is because in the US I believe the problem is society looks at things from a much more puritanical point of view. People are more likely to judge and imprison rather than treat the addiction.

I love Kratom but I can’t use it anymore because it causes bad stomach pain and puking. Has that happened to anyone else?

I’ve lived in NH for 24 years and I don’t know how these programs turned out but the amount of users has gone up exponentially and I’ve had many friends from high school die because of it.

Sometimes prison is the only way to get this treatment. A family member of mine is now in the Women’s Prison in NH and she took that option bc she was not getting fairly advocated for. Since the pandemic shutdown I haven’t had the finances to really support her. Luckily she’s getting those services now.I’m really glad you brought attention to the drug crisis in NH.
