For the purposes of all those bushcraft-firecraft needs, but also personal protection in the event of having to fight off a large predator, I want that extra length from the Trail Master. I have nightmares about bears. I want one stick to be deep and able enough to tell the bear to !@#$ off...

For this style of tactical/field blade, definitely the recon scout. If my 7inch tool can’t handle it then I don’t need to be fooling with it. It’s like you noticed, the extra length on the trailmaster doesn’t really translate to a lot of extra weight, utility, and therefore value in outdoors use, but the increased control and precision of the shorter blade is something that matters to me personally.

Great subject matter! I have them both...love both of them. I carry one/two fix blades as part of my EDC. The Scout wins the day since it is shorter and more comfy to carry daily-more concealable. Trailmaster is a beast and strictly a knife I take outdoors, in my pack, in my truck-but not usually on my side. Just too long-but such a beautiful blade. I'd love to routinely carry it on my person if I could find a way.

I have had a Trailmaster Carbon V for many years now though I had to modify it slightly as you could not choke up on the choil without cutting yourself ,I have put it to a lot of uses over the years and never had a problem with it ,though I am planning on getting a recon scout too because basically Cold Steel make superb blades and the specs on these beauty's make them almost bomb proof .I love them I really do. For finer work I have several Mora companions that I always pair up with the bigger blades they are inexpensive and sharper than a mother in laws tongue ,but for a main blade I will take any of these beauty's any day .

I don't own any knives in cpm3V, but I've heard it's a really good and tough blade steel when heat treated correctly. Late to this video but a very interesting one. I have a SRK...so went the route of the Trailmaster thanks to several of your videos. I wanted a true Bowie instead of settling on something that served multiple purposes as funny as that sounds. If SHTF, this will be one knife at my side. (Just waiting on its custom sheath.) Length and usability are weird. An (off topic) example - i got an ESEE 6 thinking it would be better as a camp knife. I had it boxed back up, b4 it took any real wear (still LNIB), and went back to my ESEE 5. I knew right away the short fat bastard procesed the things i needed to much better. As for the two Cold Steels - Recon Scout! I will admit, tho, a lot of that choice is over looks. 9 1/2 inch blades, on a Bowie, just look kind of "stretched" to me.
