Cold Steel SRK Mods

In this quick video I show the mods that I've made to my Cold Steel SRK. I also talk about what I use to strip the coating off of my blades.

One more modification you can do is to sand down the sqare/sharp edges on the front of the handle just slightly. People are having problems with the handle waring down, the rubber cracking from pushing the knife in and out of the sheith. I rounded the sharp front edges on the handle of my SRK. Made them nice and smooth and no problem with the handle anymore 🙂

    I put a 20 degree angle on my 3v version....it slices beautifully!

I’ve gone to a 20 degree bevel on all my knives. One it keeps everything consistent but every knife I have performs better at that bevel. Plus it’s still resistant to chips and rolls. Glad you’re pleased. Thanks for watching

I have to agree about the edge bevel. I laid my edge back on my old one, but that's the one I gave away in my last gaw. I have a 3V one now, and it needs the same treatment. Honestly, if you were to ask, I would recommend either the sk5 version or San Mai one. The 3V went to a saber grind, which normally I prefer, but on the SRK it doesn't seem to work as well due to the short height of the blade. It's also thicker stock than the older versions. It's still a decent knife, and I'm a fan of 3V, but it just doesn't cut as well as the older ones.

I'm really a fan of a 25° bevel and find me using it on most of my knives. That's interesting about the 3V and the difference between the 2. I would love a san-mai version, just can't bring myself to drop that much on a knife. Thanks for watching

You're welcome. I can tell you that so far I'd hate to live on the difference between them. Steel is very close so far. The big difference is the handle. Though the SRK is more comfortable, I just don't know if it will hold up to bet the ESEE-6 handle. Time will tell. Thanks for watching

Love your advice on changing the edge grind angle from 30° to 25°. Quick question: Is the knife you modified in this video the typical SRK model with a hollow grind, or is it one of the new batch of SRK‘s cold steel has released this year with a flat grind?

  • @CentralKyBushcraft

It looks like a great performer. One of the things that I've noticed is that the production blades should just be a platform for owners to make the knife "their own," with better edge bevels, handle materials, etc.

The Knife Connection actually has that option for some of their blades. But you’re right, most knife users end up modifying their blades at some point. Thanks for watching

I have seen a "dot" like that before a few times (that thing near the base of the blade that showed up after you stripped it). I've had it happen on skandi-grind knives when I remove the factory edge, to sharpen them to my liking. My GUESS would be that CS does a rough grind, followed by a finer grind for that primary bevel (you need to grind it twice for the dot to occur). For some reason, when factories grind out a primary bevel, they "scoop" into it; that is, the bevel gets slightly thicker as you approach the handle, so a flat & fine sharpening surface can't make proper contact with that curved/scooped edge until you remove more metal. That probably makes no sense, but I liked your video :)

Hey, thanx for posting your video. It inspired me to try to do the same thing to my knife. I think I could handle striping the black coating off by just following your suggestions but I don't have the knowledge or tools to change the angle of the edge. But something you said in closing is something to the effect that if given the chance to to another knife you'll be sure to make a video of the process. Well I have a Cold Steel Recon Tanto in Carbon V. I bought it new in 1998. The only thing I've ever used it for was to cut & smash through the leg bone of a huge ham. It wouldn't fix in my rotisserie. It's like brand new but boring. I'd really like you to give mine the same treatment. If you'd like to use it as the subject of that follow up video, I'd be honored. Just please send it back 😉 I can take pictures. Let me know.

I would be honored to use it for a video on how I did the process! It would take about a week to do everything to it with changing the edge angle being the most time consuming. My work would be the only thing that could change that time frame (callouts or other work related issues). If you’re still interested reach out to me on Instagram. Thanks for watching
