Cold Steel Bushman Bowie Specification:
Steel - High Carbon spring steel SK-5
Tang - One solid piece of metal with a hole to accommodate a screw
Length - Total - 31 cm (12")
Blade - 17.5 cm (7")
Grind - Hollow
Weight - 280 g (9.9 oz)
Thickness - 2.5 mm (3/32")
Sheath - Rather crappy but does the job
Testing some little known uses and survival ideas for the Bushman Bowie.
I don't sell these things but have to be honest. The Cold Steel Bushman Bowie knife is one freakin' versatile tool. Take just the knife with you (it'll barely show from under you shirt) and you have: a knife, a javelin, a boar hunting spear, a native american spearhead knife and a machete. All you need to unleash the potential is right around you in the woods. It's hard to beat it.

Great video. The original Bushman was a thicker steel than the ones they make now, but they do a pretty good job with the heat-treat so it comes out fine. Instead of a screw, I use an eye from a hook-and-eye door latch. No need to carry a screwdriver. Just insert a small stick in the eye and turn it.

Yup, that's what the lugs were for when people used to hunt, and in fact still do, boar or other dangerous game with spears. Or even when they used to kill each other with them and didn't want the spear to go too deep and get stuck.

My Bushman Bowie probably saved my life in 2015. I was on a cycling trip across Europe & was attacked by a pack of feral dogs one night. Fortunately, I had attached it to a stick as I'm paranoid. It works very well as a hewing spear, as well as for thrusting.

Have had my Bushman Bowie for close to two years and your video say's it all. It is probably one of the most versatile survival or camp knife's going, plus its light to pack along. I to have cut short handles and used it as a machete, but have not tried a pistol grip. I will have to find a curved stick and give it a go.Great video.

+Simon's Discoveries Have you ever handled a Filipino Ginunting? It's like a crossover between a sword, and a machete. It's the official sidearm for the Philippine Marine, but my point is, it has that pistol grip type of handle. Interestingly, it was likely invented before the pistol. It also has these awesome finger grooves, so it's pretty much impossible to lose your grip on it. It you want to see a video of it, try a search here on You Tube for either Prado Blades Ginunting, or TFW (Traditional Filipino Weapons) Ginunting. Prado's actually a Filipino Marine, so his are actually used in combat in Mindanao, where all of the Islamic separatists operate. I have the TFW version, which isn't bad either. The finger guard/hilt isn't as long as Prado's version, but you have the same basic blade, and handle shape. When I grab my Ginunting, which has a wooden sheath, I often feel like I'm holding a sawed off shotgun. Anyhow, I do have some Cold Steel products as well. I have their Barong Machete, which is about $10 more than their Bowie Machete. I just gave it a little touch up sharpening, & it's very sharp.

You're welcome. It is a very comfortable grip indeed. Just make sure to season the wood at least a few days as it will definitely shrink and loosen up in that tubular handle. Unless, of course, you use dead wood. Have fun and good luck.

I've seen Kenneth Kramm with his Bushman on his stealth camps in the Texas bush and wondered just how good a tool it was. Your video makes me think the guys on the "Alone" show should have considered it for one of their 10 things to take -- you clearly can get the edge very sharp and the options are great. Now I want one to try out for myself. Great review and demo. BTW, a quick check on Midway USA shows the Bushman now comes in two blade styles, clip and drop point, and the sheath now incorporates a ferro rod holder -- and the ferro rod is included. Both are $24.95 US at Midway, which is a pretty darn good price for such a versatile tool.

Random Button Pusher Yeah, I don't know why I still got mine in the old sheath. I only bought it a few months ago. The handle is wrapped in hockey tape. But, and I probably should've mentioned that in the video, there is also a small para cord loop underneath it for guard. Sort of like in kukri machetes. Something to grab when carving, chopping or stabbing.

I got the Bowie myself and can't wait to use it, I also ordered a standard one after seeing some vids where some people severely chipped the Bowie version. I'm hoping they were isolated cases, but either way it's an inexpensive knife with a great reputation. Thanks for all of the great vids and info.

***** I'm glad you liked them. As to the video where the bowie chipped, I've seen it too and I doubt it has to do with it being a bowie version. I think it's either a case of a bad temper or cold steel AK-5 doesn't like temperatures below -40 Celsius. In any rate, it's seems a very unlikely thing to ever bother me :)

Well I hope it doesn't happen to either of us! Lol But I'm sure we both always carry backups in any case. On a separate note, I can't tell what you have on your handle, but bike intertube works great as a non slip handle.

***** It's hockey tape. I use it mostly to keep that para cord loop in place. I figured it would work a bit like that middle ring on kukri handles - a type of guard.

You see if you actually did run into an aggressive animal that isn’t going to back down and your life depended on it, this knife would probably be better than any other fixed knife with the fact it can easily be fixed on a pole. My brother went on a very long hike in the Canadian Rockies. Mountain lions don’t usually attack, but if one did stand in his path and he had this to make his walking pole into a spear, I’d say he’d feel a great deal safer. He doesn’t have a PAL and no guns

I'll bet a guy could get some thumb screws so that a screw driver would not be required... or just use flatheads that will work with a quarter or whatever

as some others stated in other videos eye screws are a good option because you can use a stick to torque down. Then you don't even need a coin

The machete form makes much sense, unless you live too near the Russian or German borders. Ah, the good old days. How did you get such bc a great edge on so big a knife?

Your editing is excellent, this video was very convincing and entertaining! Thanks! But I have to disagree: as I have it I can tell that this knife is awfull! catastrophic ergonomics preventing to use it at carving or any consistent cutting task, too light for chopping, mediocre at batonning, worst at clearing brush than a 8 euros machete... plus the sheath is sh**t! The only "positive" thing is that it makes a cool (and useless) weapon in different ways. I made a video about it a few months ago. check my channel if you speak french! (and sorry if you don't)

I wouldn't watch anything on your channel because you have no credibility if you dislike this knife. Sure there are smaller knives and/or better designed knives for carving, knives with thicker spines for batoning/chopping, and there are better options for a machete. That being said, this knife does all of those things well enough and it also can be used for things other knives cannot which makes the Cold Steel Bushman an excellent choice for survivalists, campers, preppers, etc. To deny this erases any credibility you have, or think you have in the world of knives and bushcraft.
