I had a Perkins in a Massey Ferguson 165 and a Mazda Pickup truck in 1981. Never any issues.

The other innovative design feature is the self changing engine oil. It's designed to either fall on the floor or go up the exhaust thus the operator is constantly changing the oil therefore increasing the engines service life. Ahead of there time id say. (And yes, I've owned one before everyone who hasn't starts)

I had a little Datsun engine like that. It leaked and burned oil. I kept a case of oil on hand, and changed the filter every so often. That little engine took me all over the eastern US.

Very neat video My first experience with Perkins was when I was driving a Massey Ferguson 4 we tractor for a few days helping a farmer out, the Massey was a strange looking tractor with a very LONG nose on it but it had a Perkins diesel in it and over the week I drove the tractor I learned I really liked that engine, good power decent fuel burn and ran terrific the entire week! I bought a CAT 175 KW Generator for a building I own and its got a Perkins diesel in it I believe its around 180 HP and it to has been a very good power unit. When it runs its at about 65% of capacity and we are getting a fuel burn rate of around 4 GPH which I was very surprised at it being so low, seems like a great engine in my limited experience with them!

4.108 at its finest! In Finland we have three pharases about Perkins. Bot are originated from Ford Transit/Massey Ferguson 35: 1: Never approach Perkins with your fur hat on. It will think its winter and won’t start. 2: Never park Perkins under tree shade. It will think it’s dark winter day and won’t start. 3: Never park Perkins next to white building. It will think that it’s snowy winter day and won’t start.

The Linde Forklifts at my Fathers job years ago had Perkins engines, love the sound of them at idle.

I used to work for a Perkins/Rolls Royce diesel service dealer. We worked on both industrial and marine engines, mostly marine. 4.108, 4.154, 4.236, 6.354, and the dreaded TV8.540. The T6.3544M (similar to at 2:25) was one of my favorites, except those 'aluminium' manifolds, oil cooler, and intercooler housings would rot from galvanic action and lack of maintenance. The cooling system on the TV8.540M were an afterthought/absolute nightmare. Otherwise, they were great engines.

got a A3.144 perkins engine in my fordson dexta. nice engine, can survive some serious abuse. cracked engine block, rusted coolant channels, 2 broken pistons and basically no piston rings.. still ran. is currently being rebuilt with lots of new parts. Loving the availability of spare parts for these engines.

Can remember my Massey Ferguson mechanical apprenticeship in the early 70s in Mackay Qld . lots of Perkins engines. Working on A3 152 (and ad3-152) 4-192, 4- 202, 4- 236, 4- 248' 6-354 with or without turbo. There' was a v8 in the 1155 American built tractor and in cane harvesters too, and a 4-308 in a 1085 tractor. Times have changed and still there are Perkins engines in use 50 years on.

38 years as a refrigeration mechanic carrier used the 499 and the 4.108 good engine CAV pumps very dirty no cam bearings in block… oil turn black right away…. Dirty engines… carrier went to kabota in 1981 …. For those reasons …
