Cold Plunge Water Sanitation pt. 2 - Technology

This is the 3rd part of a series of three videos on keeping your water clean. The first video is an overview of the options. The second video covers pumps and filters. The third video covers sanitation and is divided into two parts: chemicals and technology.
This video (Part 2) on technology covers:
- UV light
- Ozone generators
- Which ozone generators to avoid
- ozone safety
For those interested in the less maintenance, the JED 303 ozone generator has been the gold-standard for chest freezer cold plunges since 2019. I'm an authorized reseller and you can find more info on my website here:

I'm getting ready to build a chiller/filter/ozone setup and would love to hear recommendations on which ozone generator is most suitable for in-line ozone adding as well as whether a given ozone generator for such a system should be run continuously or on a timer as you recommend here for the chest freezer setup.

Hi there! 1st of all thank you so much for your content! Has helped a lot on my DYI project. I cannot use Ozone generator (Indoors / Kids in the house) so I would like to know if it would be ok to combine UV with sporadic use of Hydrogen peroxide. I thought that this could be a good safe option but I didn't find any recommendation as such. UV could be running continuously for quality maintenance while the food grade Peroxide would be used sporadically. Please advise.

My chest freezer cold plunge has an aluminum liner. Will using an ozone generator have any adverse effects with the aluminum? I read online that it may discolor the aluminum and I am fine with that. As long as there’s nothing else super crazy that will happen. Thanks in advance

  • @JohnRichterAustin

You have a larger problem than ozone to worry about. Impurities in the aluminum can react with water and corrode. If you want your chest freezer to last long term, install one of the recommended liners. See this article: chestfreezercoldplunge.com/4-liners/ In the air, ozone can discolor aluminum. Under water, it can seriously degrade / weaken it. All of the liner option I recommend are compatible with ozone and other sanitation methods.

Ozone is only one part of the setup. You also need a circulation pump and sediment filter. See my other videos in this series for details. The JED 303 ozone generator has a built-in air pump that pushes ozone through the airstone. For countries outside of the US, I ship 240v ozone generators with pigtails (3 bare wires). You can buy a grounded (3-prong) replacement plug from any local hardware store or online and attach it to the bare wires. You usually only need a screwdriver to do this.
