Cold Iron by Rudyard Kipling - Music by Leslie Fish (Cover)
Музыка
Thanks to Ret for suggesting that I cover this fabulous setting of Rudyard Kipling's poem by Leslie Fish.
Leslie put a new album out in January this year:
lesliefish.bandcamp.com/album...
Here is Leslie's version (from the album of the same name):
• Cold Iron
Peter Bellamy also set this to music:
• Cold Iron
And the original poem:

I found the chords here:

Thank you for adding the final missing line, the whole message of the song was missing without it! Great version!

I'm trying quite much, and i can't see how last line has impact on entire song. Am i missing some context, or am i just stupid ?

As far as my reading of the poem goes, Kipling already reveals the Jesus/Christian theme a few verses earlier, so the ‘Calvary’ line isn’t essential.
Gold is for the mistress - silver for the maid" - Copper for the craftsman cunning at his trade! " " Good! " said the Baron, sitting in his hall, But Iron - Cold Iron - is master of them all." So he made rebellion 'gainst the King his liege, Camped before his citadel and summoned it to siege. " Nay! " said the cannoneer on the castle wall, " But Iron - Cold Iron - shall be master of you all! " Woe for the Baron and his knights so strong, When the cruel cannon-balls laid 'em all along; He was taken prisoner, he was cast in thrall, And Iron - Cold Iron - was master of it all. Yet his King spake kindly (ah, how kind a Lord!) " What if I release thee now and give thee back thy sword? " " Nay! " said the Baron, " mock not at my fall, For Iron - Cold Iron - is master of men all." " Tears are for the craven, prayers are for the clown Halters for the silly neck that cannot keep a crown." " As my loss is grievous, So my hope is small, For Iron - Cold Iron - must be master of men all! " Yet his King made answer (few such Kings there be!) " Here is Bread and here is Wine - sit and sup with me. Eat and drink in Mary's Name, the whiles I do recall How Iron - Cold Iron - can be master of men all." He took the Wine and blessed it. He blessed and brake the Bread With His own Hands He served Them, and presently He said: " See! These Hands they pierced with nails, outside My city wall, Show Iron - Cold Iron - to be master of men all. " " Wounds are for the desperate, blows are for the strong. Balm and oil for weary hearts all cut and bruised with wrong. I forgive thy treason - I redeem thy fall For Iron Cold Iron - must be master of men all! " 'Crowns are for the valiant - sceptres for the bold! Thrones and Powers for mighty men who dare to take and hold!' " Nay! " said the Baron, kneeling in his hall, " But Iron - Cold Iron - is master of men all! Iron out of Calvary is master of men all! "
Finally a version with the last crucial line included. Thank you very much!
adding the final line instantly made this better than Fish's rendition
Sir. This has always been one of my favorite bits of Kipling. Thank you so much for putting a smile on my face today with your music!!!
Unfortunate that this has aged so much better than Peace of Dives.

Though I wonder if it is the peace of Dives keeping the current conflict within the borders of Ukraine.
You have a wonderful voice!
I like this in a man's voice, maybe better than Leslie's🥰
Stunning video and vocal, Daniel! And the little scene-stealer is quite a charmer. :)
This came to me when I needed it and I thank you sir.
beautiful
Well done , vocal clarity and guitar were excellent. This suited your style perfectly!
hell yeah, thanks for doing this suggestion!
Fantastic job, sir.
thats amazing
I like this rendition, Leslie Fish leaves out the last verse due to her anti-christian background I suppose, though her rendition is good, this one has the faithfullness of the full poem which completes the meaning of the story between the baron and the King.

Thanks, I’m not sure why Leslie dropped the last verse.

@@DanielKellyFolkMusic I shared it on the original video, but here's the answer directly from Leslie: "Sure! Up until that last line, the poem is just generally Christian, but the particular phrasing ("Iron out of Calvary", commonly used in a lot of contemporary prayers) of that last line makes it specifically Church of England. I decided to keep it more general, therefore more widely applicable."

Thanks Eli, good to see Leslie is back in control of her Facebook.

@@elig9401and her reasoning is nonsense. Mentioning Calvary isn't "Church of England". Still seems like an excuse to make it less Christian sounding.
Tan-Haruchail!!!
Love it! More Kipling, please? (would love to hear 'A St. Helena Lullaby' sung more as a lullaby, Peter Bellamy is great, but his version is a bit too fast for me.)

@@DanielKellyFolkMusic Thank you so much for covering it! Your version sounds beautiful, and I think the slower pace suits the verse much more than the Bellamy version.
