Ian Moss is one of the greatest guitarist that no one outside of Australia has never heard of

One of a few iconic Aussie bands who are completely connected to the Australian community. They understood and sang to the community issues perfectly and so became part of the soundtrack of our lives.

Phil Small is so much an integral part of the sound that most people miss because it's bass. As a bass player of some thirty odd years myself, I can say he's absolutely brilliant.

We were so lucky here growing up with bands like Cold chisel, AC/DC, The Angles, living end and INXS….. and hardly anyone knew them outside of Australia, so good to see you discovering what we took for granted…. They were so approachable, they sang their songs in different versions, one day they’d play a hug venue, then the next there at some local pub like all night just taking requests,people buying beers for them …… so good….. and bands here still do that

Just for fun, see if you can find a copy of "Roadies: The Secret History of Australian Rock'n'Roll," by Stuart Coupe. It gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the folks that made those shows possible. My sister gave me a copy when I was visiting her in Sydney, and I managed to get through most of it on the flight back to Canada. My in-flight reading material on the way down to Oz was "Talk - Action = 0. An Illustrated History of D.O.A." by Joey Shithead (Joe Keithley).

Bow River is a Diamond Mine in outback Western Australia in the Kimberlys ( not far from Argyl Diamonds and the World famous Pink Diamonds) In the middle of nowhere in the tropical North ( the top end )where it is stinking hot , Humid and thunder storms and raining. At the mine they work 12 hours a day 7 days a week trying to save money to recapture his youth. But he is stuck in the city in the cold south working in a factory and pissing all his money up the wall ( at the pub ) going nowhere with no money. Dreaming of getting away just needs to get a set of wheels and if he drives non stop he can be back at Bow River in the Tropical Top End in 6 Days. This is the story of my life working in the Gold and Diamond mines in Western Australia

Never get tired of listening to Cold Chisel. My favourite Aussie band. RIP Steve Prestwich.

RIP Steve Prestwich excellent drummer excellent song writer and all round Great man.

Their bass player lives just down the road, give a few lessons. Those days....they played heaps, or INXS playing every dive in Perth, or J. Diesel and the Injectors at the Herdsman........

@@Quinctili There's a really good Baby Animals documentary on KZread that was done for their 25th anniversary. They talk about how the live music scene was just amazing at that time. Not so much now. I was friends with a great local band who were building a following, and their regular gig was scrapped in favour of a dude with a laptop.

I was at that very concert in the VIP section where this was my eldest son's first ever concert and the atmosphere was IN-SANE. Loved every single second of it. Glad you guys shared the same love we did

I saw jimmy at a concert for $20 in the 90’s….. he did his concert for 2 hours then came back on for another four hours singing, telling stories behind the songs, telling jokes, taking requests, everyone e singing along…. So so much fun

@@DMSProduktions No. Bowen Hills. They played there in 1980 and 1982. I must have seen them in 1982. Had to be 18 to go in there. Cloudland was demolished in the middle of the night. It was a sort of heritage building and there was a big uproar over it. Strange things you remember, but can't remember where you put your car keys 5 mins ago lol

I feel so lucky that I spent many happy hours seeing bands like Chisel in Melbourne and Sydney pubs. I’m middle aged now but feel blessed.

Blows me away that foreigners don’t know of our greats!!!! Loved seeing the reactions!!!!

The 'Great Blight' on the blues harp was total magic to the ears!

I have seen Cold Chisel live plenty of times. Fantastic band!!!!!!

Ian Moss the lead guitarist/singer on this track is originally from Alice Springs, in one of the HOTTEST places in Australia! Unbelievable talent. Jimmy Barnes of course, Scottish born, but proudly Aussie, just phenomenal. Don Walker on keyboards wrote most of Cold Chisel’s songs.😎🇦🇺👍🏼

There are three Bow River's in Australia, one in Canada, and one in Ireland. This song is about the Bow River in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Bow River flows through the oldest rocks on Earth at 3.6 billion years old. The Bow River Mine is a diamond mine. The guy on guitar, Ian Moss, wrote the song. Cold Chisel is amazing. I highly recommend Khe Sahn from this same concert.

A few years ago, I was doing monitors on one of the secondary stages at the Calgary Folk Festival, the site of which is located right by the Canadian Bow River. We had a couple of Australian musicians on the stage, along with a bunch of other musicians. From the stage, one of the Aussies noticed an old sign on the side of a building which said "Bow River Lumber Company." She mentioned it to the audience and said that there was an Australian song called "Bow River." I knew of the song, knew about Cold Chisel, and had their Greatest Hits Album on my phone. I hooked my phone up to the mixing console so, as she was packing up her gear at the end of the session, I could play "Bow River" quietly through her stage monitor. It took her a few seconds to realize what was going on, but I got a laugh out of her. I think she was a bit surprised that a random Canadian would be familiar with Cold Chisel, and that I'd have their music at my fingertips.

Yes, this is my favourite song of theirs. They were a wild band when starting out from what I have heard, Barnesy drinking 1-2 bottles of whiskey on stage a night and all of them fighting each other back stage! Stories I got from one of the bouncers who ran a bike shop across the street from my house growing up.

He may have been singing lead here, but Ian Moss (the guitarist) is not even the lead singer for Cold Chisel. Jimmy Barnes, the other guy with the mic that you may recognise from the meme with the screaming cowboy in the sky, is actually their lead singer.

Cold Chisel. Rock royalty. Adelaide (My hometown) founded some pretty good music: - Cold Chisel / Jimmy Barnes - The Angels - Redgum - Hilltop Hoods - The Superjesus - The Masters Apprentices - The Mark Of Cain - Funkoars And probably more I can't think of. Not bad for a small city of what would have only been 900k or less back then.

It lead to bands like the Chisels, The angels, INXS, Midnight Oil, Goanna, Jimmy Barnes (From the Chisels), The flowers (who went on to be called Icehouse) and so many more - guys you have heaps of material to look at. I'm pretty sure Steve or Jimmy grabbed him by the throat and slammed him into a wall after a gig. Bottom line, never fk with Chisel, especially Prestwich and Barnes 😆 🤣 👊 💪

Cold Chisel, the greatest band ever to play in a pub! This was often said about them.

You guys have no idea! We had THE best rock bands in the world in the 70's & 80's, Cold Chisel being only one of many. INXS, Midnight Oil, Men at Work, Mondo Rock, The Angels, Hoodoo Gurus, Australian Crawl, Spy vs Spy, The Sunnyboys..... I could fill pages and pages. The reason for the edgy sound is that these bands honed their craft on the pub scene and if they weren't good a couple of things happened; One, they got pelted with beer and Two, they didn't get any more gigs because the crowd would tear the place up. You have to check out more Aussie bands.

"Bow river" from this song was a diamond mine (now long gone) in the Kimberleys of Western Australia, at the southern end of lake Argyle where the Bow and Ord rivers intersect.

I’m Aussie and grew up with these bands just awesome time of my life

Cold Chisel is a legendary Aussie blues rock band.... And jimmy Barnes the lead Vocalist has had his own solo band since the 80's You need to play some of both of there biggest hits

A truly great Australian band forged in pubs you should check out and this recording if possible of Stevie Wright's Evie parts 1,2 and 3 live at the Sydney Opera House 1979 Rocktober. I should say I grew up going to pubs and venues watching Cold Chisel in Sydney.

Quintessential Australian band - so good live and such a talented group of musos = even in their solo projects. So many great songs, you need to check out more of the band... Their lyricist is an 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭!! He writes the lyrics for many of their songs as a hobby. . But his full-time job is designing ROCKETS.

I love Cold Chisel. Their songs are timeless.

I moved to Canberra a few years ago and when Chisel came thru and also Mossy doing his anniversary for Matchbook he stayed at his sisters and I got an invite to go meet him. He greeted me at his sisters front door like I was an old mate. We had a jam. I played him Flame Tree's and I asked him to play Bow River and Such a Beautiful Thing. The second time we just had coffee and a chat over a half hour or so. Mossy is a ripper bloke!!

@@jadecawdellsmith4009 fair enough but I’ve actually worked with many singers in my life (overseas as well), Toured with them around Europe and Asia. I know a great voice when I hear it. So you do NOT know my experience and as far as I am concerned Jimmy has a great lower tone but he is a screamer (yes and that’s great for rock singers) and a lot of the live stuff, he doesn’t hit the mark as high when he sings live but the energy does come over. He’s no Joe Cocker. Cold chisel as a band are and were incredible and have some amazing classic songs.

Barbara, everyone loves Mossy!! He's just a ripper bloke. I've been lucky enough to meet him here in Canberra in the recent couple of years. My sister is close friends with Ian's sister. The first visit to his sisters place we jammed 🎸. I've never felt pressure like I did when Mossy is 1mt away and I'm playing Flame Trees for him. I love him to bits as a straight, blue collar, Chisel loving, 52 year old bloke😊

The piano player is Mr. Don Walker. He's a former rocket scientist. He also writes a mean song, plays a mean piano, and sings a mean ballad. Look up 'Tex, Don and Charlie' to hear some of the best Australia has to offer.

Every single member of this band was extraordinarily talented and they knew it. The ego clashes were legendary and the fact they remained together for as long as they did and to leave the legacy they did, Australians are forever grateful.

You got that right. My band supported them at Wollongong Leagues back in...I wanna say...1981? Much angst after Don & Phil got the shits and screamed at each other over something that happened prior to coming back into the dressing room (it was like a 4x4 cupboard). I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and left for the bar. I don't remember if the rest of my band did the same, but I ended up at the back of the auditorium plastered waiting for my girlfriend to pick me up. I picked up my gear the next day. I was surprised that it hadn't been 'jacked...

My favourite Cold Chisel song, and a great live version. They are tighter than a ducks arse.

Some of the music of my youth. We had some great bands in Oz back then.

Honestly, anything from Au from the 70's n 80's you guys will love. Chisel, Angels, Oils, INXS, Divynals, The Church, Australian Crawl, Hunters and Collectors, Men at Work, Accadacca - LOL, Dragon, Mental as Anything, Goanna, Crowded House n Split Enz, although the Kiwis have equal rights with these two bands, Little River band, Icehouse and the Hoodoo Gurus to name a few. All had big hits Down Under and some did really well OS as well, but they're all staples here in Au. But if I had to choose, Hunters is the way to go. They deserved soo much more. Try Holy Grail or Salvation from them, however there's an absolute bucket full of great songs from all of these artists.

@@paulwood5803 Nice Paul. I never saw the Badloves myself but the Aztecs were amazing and Billy, well, he was one of a kind that was for sure. I suggest that you look up some of the names I mentioned for yourself as well then, if you haven't already, as the 70's and 80's, although fantastic everywhere, were especially so here in Au with a heap of amazing Au additions, that never quite completely made it OS when it comes to music.

When Cold Chisel tried making it on the American charts , music producers wanted nothing to do with them as they said they couldn't understand Jimmy Barnes singing/screaming voice and they wouldn't make it in the USA

A bloke called Marty Schwartz. I recently read, in a book, that after a gig in the States Barnes or Prestwich charged off the stage and had Schwartz pinned to a dressing room wall by his throat with a raised fist. Can't remember which one initially had him by the throat but the other one threw him away so he could go to town on Schwartz!! Then they wrote "you got nothing I want" in 'honour of him. The last time I saw Chisel (2020??) Barnsey mention Schwartz and the American music industry before they played 'you got nothing I want'.

And yet most people only know Jimmy Barnes from the Kirin J Callinan song Big Enough where he just screams in the clouds.

Puts a smile on my dial seeing people listening to Chisel for the first time. These guys have been rocking it from the early 1970’s and still rocking it in there solo careers. Let’s hope they get back together and do another tour. Cold Chisel rocks. 👌

Jimmy Barnes - Working class man - is an anthem....

jimmy barnes could have been the lead singer of van halen after david lee roth. but he had 3 young kids and chose family. and his 2 dughters sing amazingly. his son plays drums with australian icon band "Rose Tatttoo"

The harmoca is usually played through a mic into a small guitar tube amp and that’s where you get the sound.

Best seen/heard in a pub. Stopped doing that in '83. Mind you , did have the luck to see them then. In a pub.

Ian Moss wrote this song, everyone in Cold Chisel is an important cog in their success, wrote & Sung. We have 2 Bow rivers here, both are in WA 1 in the south other is in Kimberley's, near the NT Border, Ian is from Alice Springs that is Central Australia, Alice Springs, Bow river is only 1900km from here great camping all the way up, see very few people, probably more Crocs, often take long weekends or week to go have some fun.

Saw these guys so many times in the early 80s when they were in their prime. Still have an empty vodka bottle Jimmy left on the stage at one show.

Had to watch this reaction again, brilliant and relevant point of view,,

Doc was some kind of front man!! I loved those evil whispers he say during a song........."I know your big sister......." Or the iconic ending to Secrets "can you please tell me what the time is....."
