Cold Casting a Resin Prop Wrench Using Metal Powder and Smooth-Cast 325

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, Milo shows how he makes a prop wrench that looks exactly like a real metal casting. The casting is made using Smooth-Cast 325 resin and real metal powders.

Smooth-Cast 325 - www.smooth-on.com/products/sm...
Real Metal Powders - www.smooth-on.com/product-lin...
to make the mold, Milo uses clay and alginate to split the model down its halfway point. Then, the first half of the silicone is poured. After this first half cures, the mold is flipped and the alginate and clay are removed. Then release is applied and the second half is poured.
After the original model is demolded, smooth-Cast 325 resin is mixed with So-Strong colorant and metal powder. This mixture is poured in the mold and allowed to cure, which creates a casting.
The casting is burnished with steel wool, and finished with a thin layer of shoe polish which is buffed.

  • @smoothon

    @smoothon

    You should apply release to the entire first mold half, even under where the model goes. That way, excess rubber that gets underneath can be removed and trimmed away.

    It can be polished to a high luster, depending on the amount of powder you add. Because of the nature of metal powder, “chrome” type finishes aren’t really possible.

    Something I’ve been thinking about - is if Silicone can only stick to Silicone, why not use two or more different version of Smooth on silicon for Mold making, ~ example- Rebound for details then say Mold star to make the rest of the Mold, or mix and match ~ the best of both products.

    I do that a lot w rebound and moldstar/dragon skin. You just have to make certain that the silicones are compatible (e.g. platinum cure and tin cure do not play well together).

    All of these cold casting videos with the metal powder.... you never mention powdering the molds first, yet when you open the molds after casting, it's clear that has been done by the halo of color. Also, you can't get that quality of metallic shine from just powder in the resin (which is why the molds should be powdered first). Why do most of these videos omit the powdering of the molds, even when it has been done?

  • @smoothon

    @smoothon

    2 жыл бұрын

    In this case, the residue is from an earlier test with powdering the mold. It didn't provide any benefit for this piece versus mixing the powder in, so that is the method we recommended for this tutorial.
