Coincidences | Trey (Theist) - Atlanta, GA | Atheist Experience 20.49

Trey says that he believes god is the “thing behind the thing behind the thing”. He believes that strange and meaningful coincidences are proof of god that there is something out there that cares.
The Atheist Experience episode 20.49 for December 11, 2016, with Matt Dillahunty and Jen Peeples.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.

KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Much of the mockery comes from atheists who have never grown up with an enforced religious worldview. And frankly their atheism lacks rigor. It is a belief system, not a hard won understanding.

A tornado was heading toward my home during a family gathering, so I got into the bath tub and prayed really hard to god. I flew through the air for what felt like an eternity, before hitting the ground. I lifted up the tub, looked around, and realized that I was still alive. Clearly, god had answered my prayers. Why he could not save my 17 family members, I will never know. Seriously, grown adults should know better.

The thing about people's personal experiences is that you can't combat it by giving them plausible explanations for the claimed phenomena. The real question is how they came to conclude that the cause was supernatural, and do they apply the same reasoning to events that don't confirm their belief.

The vast majority of humanity may have bought into these totally and utterly ridiculous belief systems, but that realization only aggravates my nausea. When I observe what is going on with the religious in the US, but also in my own country, I can only feel despair, and I really do. It is such a minute part of humanity that is really responsible for our progression in the midst of rampant stone age superstitions of the worst kind, that it is almost a miracle.

Urgh... he KNOWS they are coincidences, but pays them special attention cause they feel so special... how often did he open the bible and the first verse he read had NOTHING to do with the situation he was in and he had to keep flipping pages? How often did he drive in his car and what the radio played had NO connection with his life at that point? Even ifhe listened to a pastor sermonizing? This is pure confirmation bias clinging to a very small number of "astonishing" coincidences, but forgets that these are just the false positivies out of a zillion of cases NOT working out that way.

I had a friend who was very keen on the 'I Ching'. As I am sure you know, when you follow the 'I Ching' you toss coins or some other method to create a hexagram of six binaries, the you look up the corresponding entry in the book. She would always be impressed by how relevant the entry in the book was to her life at that moment. Sometimes she would do the hexagram and then ask me to look it up and read it to her. I took to reading her any paragraph at random but she always said that it was great advice for her life at that moment.

I love doing this to people who are obsessed with their astrological signs. When they ask me to read their horoscope I always read a completely different sign and when they point out how it’s totally them I let them know it was totally a different sign. They will always try to justify it, too. Like, “Well they are both water signs” or “Im Libra but I have Gemini rising”. Then I tell them I’m reading their real one and fake it again. It’s the same game every time lol

Only they aren't, most of the music I listen to is years or decades old. It's so easy to hear or read something and apply it to something else, because we interpit things the way we want.

A quickie. We all know of Orion don’t we. The stars and the nebula that make up the ‘shape’ that we call ’Orion’ are hundreds and hundreds of light years apart - they have Jack Schizer to do with each other but we pattern seeking humans put a label on their collective image. I got caught out like this with coincidence after coincidence. It led me in to the church, into preaching, teaching, jumping up and down and all the rest. But I see it now for what it was - simply me forging a link between occurrences and pinning that on an exterior entity. This was a very honest caller, and a very good response.

So John 3:16 .. I've laughed being a creature of patterns myself and seeing it parodied without knowing the verse. So.. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. So God loved the world? Except for when he caused a global flood killing everyone but a family of 8. Killing the first born child of every house hold whom didn't mark their doors in sacrificial blood. Viewing women as commodities, endorcing slavery.. That homosexuals should be stoned to death? Your book not mine. When I was a devout christian.. I was always under the impression that God was my father and I his child.. As many times it's referred to him or Jesus saying that I was. Turns out Jesus is his one and only son. Not only have i lost my faith but it turns out i was adopted. I can't even accept that the crucifixion was a sacrifice.. 3 days later and you're the right hand man of the person controlling the universe for eternity? It is and we have. Its a phenomenon known as pareidolia. It seems profound because thats how our brains evolved. If you were a caveman ancestor and your going through the woods and you see something that LOOKS like a lion, it is far better for ypur survival for your brain to tell you "thats a lion, run" and be wrong than for your brain to tell you "well we dont have enough evidence that its a lion. Let gather more data" because the people whos brains did not give them a false positive of the fight or flight response were more likely to get eaten by an actual lion. This shit is already well understood lol.

On top of the comment Matt made regarding the cryptic quality of this coincidence and supposed message from god, then other people who didn't have this experience are left with the dilemma of believing and being inspired by the story or being skeptical. Also I have an example of what I experienced as a seemingly impossible coincidence, but yet it did occur. There's no religious context or life changing results. Just a weird, kind of funny thing that demonstrates that on any day with all the billions of interactions taking place, somewhere things will converge randomly with strange results... I was on an important phone call in the house and my sons were wrestling and goofing off like kids do. The TV was on also. I was having trouble hearing, so I very emphatically mouthed the words to my kids " I'M ON THE PHONE" and at the exact moment whoever was talking on TV said the same thing and it matched perfectly with my mouth. My sons eyes got as big as saucers as they looked back and forth between each other, me and the TV and they started laughing even louder. :-) Can you even calculate the statistical probability of something like that? Again, this had no great affect on my life other than to remind me whenever I'm tempted to assign agency to some strange event that wild coincidences can and do occur every day.

Coincidences happen all the time I turn on songs that remind me of what's going on that day or breakups or if I break up with a girl I end up turning on a movie where the main character or one of the supporting characters names is that of my ex-girlfriend. Does that mean cupid is real? I'm putting a link for people to check out. Bruce Bochy is a major league baseball manager and at the time of this coincidence, had been managing from 1995 to 2019. His record at the time of this article at the time of this coincidence, had been managing from 1995 to 2019. His record at the time of this article was 1995 wins and 2019 losses. That has nothing to do with God whatsoever. But statistics like that, happen sometimes. Especially in sports because you have to look at the same amount of people Who have played a sport over the years and the ridiculous amount of Statistics that you can pull up. Baseball statistics especially are crazy sometimes. But that has nothing to do with God. You can find coincidences like that in all walks of life for every religion, that's why people believe in their horoscopes so much. Because you can look and find things that match up. That's what our brain does. That's the reason we receive shapes in the clouds and constellations. Coincidence can be crazy But to think that you can use it as evidence for a God is really a stretch. Because for every God and every religion and every person who doesn't have religion, at some time they will also have crazy coincidences and it can't prove everything. Especially when it proves nothing. During the area 51 raid I was seeing the number 51 constantly. Independence day came on twice. Does that mean aliens are real? Just the other day I was typing a message to my friend and on the TV they said the word that I happened to be typing at that exact moment. It just happens. And it may be weird, but it can't be used as evidence FOR ANYTHING.

Post Traumatic Calm Syndrome and a chain of coincidences leads them to believe that the thing behind the thing which they know nothing about has an atribute of care and it's the specific god from a specific version of a specific denomination of a specific religion. I'm still not convinced. The plural of anecdote is not evidence.

So someone lives for a few decades. Once or twice during those decades a really amazing coincidence happens. Given all the stuff that happens to a person over a few decades I would suspect some really amazing coincidences to be expected. But what about all the gazillions and gazillions of times when something amazing like this didn't happen. Do we count those in our data set or just ignore them because nothing special stands out?

Some made no sense, but occasionally they seem like something is behind them, and I could see how somebody could believe a miracle that is merely a coincidence.

I know I'm late to this party but perhaps those who come along after me will find this interesting. Trey is fascinated by coincidences but appears to not understand what they are. A coincidence is a concurrence of events without apparent causal connection. And until there is convincing evidence to prove up that 'causal connection' it remains merely a coincidence. As far as Tim Tebow's 3:16 game, Trey was about 50% correct in his assertions. Here is what he got right: (1) Tebow did set several records for a performance in a playoff game (2) He did pass for 316 yards (3) There were a couple of other connections to '3:16' [More on that later.] Here Is what he got wrong: (1) I could find no evidence that he wrote "3:16" on his eye black. Almost positive that would be a violation of NFL's uniform policy. He did write that during one/some college games. (2) He/Broncos did not average 31.6 seconds of possession time. There is nothing that corresponds to 31.6 seconds of time in any of the stats from that game. (3) He/Broncos did not average 3.16 yards per rush. Tebow was credited with 5 rushes for 50 yards (not bad!) The other COINCIDENTAL references to 3:16 are: (1) According to John Ourand of Sports Business Journal the 4th quarter television ratings were 31.6. (2) Tebow averaged 31.6 yards per completion (which is really impressive until you realize he only completed 10 out of 21 passes.) My favorite stat that some like to reference is the total possession time of 31:06. Two things, '31:06' and '3:16' are two completely different numbers so this is in no way a coincidence and it was the STEELERS who possessed the ball for 31 minutes 6 seconds. Talk about trying to see a pattern where none exists.

Oh I have already said in several posts tha tit is nice of "Prager U", Eric Hovind's little shop of horrors or AiG to sponsor so many atheist channels with their hard scammed cash ;-) Same for believers, YEC or FE always voting videos down... which for the channel doesn't make a difference as KZread only measures the "interaction" of a video not if it is popular or not! So downthumbing means the video gets pushed up in the algorhythms, gets paid more and will be easier to find with any search touching on its subjects. Those folks should also be thanked. especially the trolls with 100 sock accounts thumbing down a single video a LOT of times :D

Tim Tebow put John 3:16 and God compelled him to have a good game? That Florida Gators team that Tim Tebow was on crushed almost everybody they played. They won the National Championship! The caller sounds a little like me in the couple of years before I became an atheist. I suspect he's reading/listening to Rob Bell (the "thing behind the thing behind the thing" is a total Rob Bellism) which is no bad thing in terms of the kind of Christian he'll be if he retains his faith. It's definitely at the liberal, loving and equality-affirming end of Christianity. Through Rob Bell is a proponent of the woo woo that I eventually came to regard as just as ridiculous as every other religious claim.

Why write a book for humanity... if you don't want to convey your thoughts and wishes through it? I read the Bible, and found it to be a book of old stories about magic. It is bronze-age, middle-eastern mythology. Then people tell me they believe it's real and I have no idea why. I ask for evidence and they don't have any. I ask them to demonstrate their god and they can't. I don't accept the Bible for the same reasons I don't accept Greek or Norse mythology.
