Coilover Conversion on a Kei Truck - will it work?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we do a custom Coilover Conversion on a Daihatsu HiJet. We remove the front strut setup and replace them with adjustable coilovers. Should stiffen the front end and provide more clearance for bigger tires.

Wes, posted the information on the Japanese mini truck forum a year ago, hoping to help with crossover parts to avoid paying the prices for the stock parts. one thing i did different was, on the top plate, I cut the corners off and re drilled all of the holes so I could have the adjustments better aligned to adjust the castor camber in a more true fashion. I also cut a piece of rubber from an old truck inner tube to go in between the top mount making a hole for the dampening adjuster screw. this keeps mud and water from getting under the seat. glad to see somebody did the conversion as the lift kits and the replacement springs are well over the cost of the new struts besides the cost of the stock parts. Paco

For sure. No more rubbing when i hit bumps or put my heavy friends in it. My originals were probably worn out anyway.

Would this also work to lower the truck? Being its a adjustable coil over? If so how low do you think you could get with this set-up?

  • @wespiece

Maybe. The shocks are about the same length as the factory ones. And the lower brackets were screwed most of the way down. If you screw them all the way down and take all the preload off the shocks it might drop it some

Not necessarily. Oftentimes engineering decisions are made by manufacturers just to keep costs down. There might be better solutions, but the solution chosen works best for their target demographic (in this case: farmers, delivery drivers, etc.) at a price point that makes sense for that particular market. This is where the aftermarket and customizers come into play: modifying their vehicle to suit a different or more specific end user’s needs. Though not mentioned in this video, I suspect this little truck rides a lot better now than it did when new.
