LYRICS
Carried them over your shoulders, you fear
The absence, the void you'll cause
When you choose to leave them all here
There's no turning back, it's time that you steer
The wide open stares back alone at the cusp
The self that you thought you lost
The shine that burned well into rust
You can’t hear my voice
Cause I'm not loud enough
Believe me, when I say
It's a long way back from here
Goodbye for now
Hang on, it’s clear…
That the road’s about to get rough
Oh, can you hear
The ringing, it’s left in my ear
Over and over
The light hits the dust
It's the choice that I've made
But for us, I'd choose to give it all up
If you want me here
Well, then ask me to stay
The glistening wet concrete
The heat off the road
The clamoring hands
And the bus you call home
This is it?
Believe what you want
In this space I don't fit
Same day repeats
With the things that you see
Dirty dressing room carpets and broken TVs
Is this it?
In this water I'll tread 'til the day that I'm dead
Goodbye for now
Echo, echoes
Mile marker
Minutes, hours
If this it
And there is no more
And you believe you’re true
It's a long way back from here
There's no going home

@@idonteatcheetos It's not about his wife. He's made it very clear when talking about this song that it was written during a time when he was pretty sure he wanted to leave the band and give up fame. By the time this was recorded I think he'd already changed his mind and wanted to keep on going, but they still recorded the song because it was good, and because they felt like it was an important, if sad, step along the way. You don't even have to go off questions and interviews and stuff, its right in the lyrics. "The absence, the void you'll cause , When you choose to leave them all here" What happens to the rest of the band if the lead member leaves? "Oh, can you hear its ringing its left in my ear?" Literal ringing in the ear from performing hundreds of loud shows, and also perhaps a second more psychological meaning. "The clamoring hands and the bus you call home, This is it, believe what you want, in this space, I don't fit" cheering crowds and a tour bus that they live on for weeks or months at a time during tours, and feeling like he's not cut out to keep living like that (also worth mentioning how in 'The Island', he expresses that life in a small apartment in the city, and riding crowded busses everywhere, feels like being trapped on an island, or a small enclosed room.. he's talked about writing that song to express his desire to move back out to the countryside) "The same day repeats with the things that you see , Dirty dressing room carpets and broken TVs, Is this it? In this water I'll tread 'til the day that I'm dead" getting depressed about the monotony of seeing the same types of places over and over as life becomes a cycle of performing shows and making public appearances, feeling like it's just gonna go on and on till he dies, unless he quits.

@@maxwelld23 Frontman Claudio Sanchez said this of “The Pavilion (A Long Way Back)” in his interview with Rolling Stone: For example, there was no concept with “Pavilion.” The bare-bones meaning behind that song was basically leaving the band. It wasn’t until I started structuring the actual beats of the story that I found a place for it within the concept. I took those bones and fleshed it out with the backstory of Creature and Sister Spider and how they worked in theater productions. In that second verse, if you listen, it talks about “dressing room carpets” and “broken TVs” - it’s basically the loop of being a band on the road, all the things you sort of endure. For me, it was like, ‘That’s obviously about [leaving the band], but how do I take this real-life situation and feed it to these fictitious characters to give them more legs to stand on, using this song that feels so outside of the concept?”

What draws me back to this video is the light in Claudio's eyes. The light in them is how you can tell that he loves this; the humility in them is so saintly, like you can tell that he is a compassionate man who doesn't see his fans as merely fans, but people with sadness, loneliness, loss, and confusion, and connects with them through his stories and lyrics. Or, maybe I'm reading into this because I like looking at Claudio's face. He has a nice face. 😩

You know, this album dropped toward the end of a really rough time in my career (I was basically going through a software development bootcamp some 600 miles from home), and since I was living in company housing I was isolated from my fiancee and my family for about 4 months. I know it's not nearly as long as some people have had to deal with, but it was still a really rough time for me being farther from home than I've ever been. I remember the first time I heard this song I was in my car on my way to visit home for the first time in... Probably six weeks? I left Friday night after work for a 9-hour drive, and I'd only be able to be home until Sunday when I had to drive another 9 hours back to work. I just started kind of breaking down as the song played, realizing how much everything was changing and how much I was leaving behind. It all basically came down to the choice between working a terrible minimum-wage job and going nowhere, or leaving everything for the chance at a successful career, being shipped off to almost anywhere in the US. This song definitely inspired me to keep putting my best foot forward. There were a lot of times I wanted to just give up and quit, but with how much I'd already put into the program it would be stupid to just give up. It's been a year and two months since I got my job, my wife and I have been married just under 4 months now, and I can honestly say that I've finally made it at this point. While I would say I might have done things differently, life's been pretty great since then. :)

There's just something about seeing Claudio smiling and the band genuinely enjoying themselves that just really touches me. It's great seeing them all loving the music they make. In the over twenty years they've been together, and almost twenty years since SSTB, they've been giving us so much, and we've given them all our support. I hope they continue to make what they love, so we can love what they make.

So I've known these guys for about 6 months now and listened to a couple of tracks off of their new album. Since they were on tour near me at the end of April I bought a ticket just because I was f*cking bored of my life at that point. I gotta say this concert changed my life. More than six weeks have gone by since that show and there hasn't been a single day that I haven't listened to their music since then. Honestly I am so grateful for this band. Their music helped me through tough times during the last weeks and will probably help me through hard times for the upcoming couple of weeks. This track was actually the first I ever heard of them and I instantly fell in love with it. Glad it got a music video. Keep on rocking guys and all the best! \m/
