COFFEE WITH KEAS - KEA - ARTHURS PASS - NEW ZEALAND

NAUGHTY, CLEVER AND FUNNY - THE KEA, THE WORLDS ONLY ALPINE PARROT.
New Zealand's Kea Conservation Trust warns people not to feed kea as it only encourages their bad behaviour and some foods can be toxic to them. Feeding them stops them from being gainfully employed in looking for food and gives then more time to get up to mischief, especially when fed inappropriately high energy food. Some human foods, such as chocolate, is toxic to them and feeding kea also habituates them to try new and novel foods. The Trust is working with communities to help them live in harmony with these fully protected birds.

    Hi fellow bird enthusiasts! Remember that .... these are wild mountain parrots here in the vid - they are not trained or hand-reared domestic parrots and do not come from a pet store or a bird breeder! They are highly curious, dexterous, mischievous and seemingly unafraid! I note they even predate on small lambs! We lived among the Northern Kaka at Great Barrier Island and they were similarly cheeky but they do not venture forth and interact on a close-up and personal level like the Kea! The David Attenborough doco on the Kea is well worth a look! Brilliant! The only true mountain parrot on planet earth! Once in Arthur's Pass our bus stopped to let us out for a photo of the scenery - I wore a woven fabric skirt that had silver threads Kea swooped over and flew at my skirt commencing to collect a silver thread out of it. They love anything that glitters or sparkles, and they love strings and rubber too! Very cool bird! :-) Check out the underside of their wing plumage - it is spectacular!

    To supplement your bird knowledge, caffeine is _very_ harmful. In quantities we wouldn't even notice, for them could be fatal - their little hearts (and bodies otherwise) are much more sensitive to it than you might think.

  • @wakaka2waka

    @wakaka2waka

    Victoria M Apparently, on the BBC Attenborough documentary, I saw them drinking coffee from a Ski lodge - the narration says none of our food does them harm and makes them fatter giving them free time to fool around. They are hardcore omnivores, so perhaps it does not affect them as much as other birds?

  • @victoriam586

    @victoriam586

    9 жыл бұрын

    wakaka2waka Lots of birds are "hardcore omnivores". The problem is that birds' metabolisms are much faster than mammals (meaning the caffeine, gram for gram, is more potent), and smaller size means even less caffeine is necessary to cause permanent damage. It's a shame that the documentary you saw was inadequately researched, but I'm afraid that's not uncommon; many documentaries (even big-name ones!) cite unreliable information, some going as far as inventing "facts" on the fly for content's sake.. Remember, they're as much entertainment pieces as educational pieces, and adjust themselves accordingly - If in doubt, search for independent sources!

  • @nutyyyy

    The documentary was referring to some of the fast food items they were eating during the winter at a ski resort, which was fine due to supplementing their diet with high calories. However, it also points out that they try everything and soon work out what is good for them, so a Kea had a taste of some beer and promptly knocked over the glass and the bottle, same with coffee.

    There's a difference between hardcore omnivore bird and hard core omnivore parrot. (And yes I know that parrots are birds). These parrots, as a group noted for intelligence, split from the rest of the birds around 59 million years ago. THE ONLY omnivore parrots in 59 million years origins came from a decision to live in such a harsh environment that their intelligence, diet and metabolism needed to take a step change in order for them to source enough calories to survive. As a result they are tough, hardy birds, who prior to humans showing up had no predators at all. The southern alps are a barren though majestic part of the world. Having spent time with Kea in their natural environment I have no fear anything we contribute to their diet will harm these gorgeous creatures. In the southern alps what you see in the "documentaries" is what you get in real life. As an omnivore chances are Kea have eaten everything which the botanical culinary chemists (ok plants) have thrown at them. And they have survived. For Kea playing games to sneak a lap of coffee isn't a random behavior, it's a learned and practiced behavior. Like us this intelligent animal craves stimulation. Don't withhold caffeine from one of the few other species on planet earth which probably enjoys it.
