Coffee Scale Comparison | Acaia Lunar vs. Timemore Black Mirror Basic vs. GDEALER

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I'm talking about coffee scales. These seem to be some of the most popular scales people are using for brewing. I go over each of the scales and give you my thoughts on them. As always, thanks for watching, and please subscribe! Let me know if there's anything specific you'd like me to explore.

13:15 Final Conclusions
Notes:
GDEALER ~$15
- Can actually weigh up to ~800g despite 500g max limit.
- Seemingly indestructible. I've dropped mine, spilled hot espresso over, etc. and it still works despite the fading LCD
- Honestly, you don't need another scale
- 2X GDEALER is an awesome combo
-Battery life is OK but uses easy to swap AAA batts.
- Slowest response time, so stop your shot slightly early
Timemore Black Mirror ~$60-70
- If you tap the timer button 6-10 times rapidly when the scale is on you can turn on auto timing + tare features. This is similar to the Lunar. THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A B21 OR NEWER BLACK MIRROR! Mine seems to be too old :(
- Supposedly fully waterproof
- seems to have aggressive rounding by .3g
- Better for dosing and pour over
- I like the beeps it makes better than the Acaia scales
- To turn off the sound hold the timing function down for a while
- Least granular numbering if you have something heavy. Numbers can potentially jump if you are adding a lot of weight very quickly. Numbers are accurate but pay attention to the exact #'s when brewing.
Acaia Lunar ~$200
- Probably the best scale for beginners if money is no object. It does everything for you!
- Micro USB is big sad in 2020
- BT connectivity w/DE1 is awesome (I use auto tare + detect flow)
- Most of the time you will keep this in two modes at max
- Can be used for pourovers
- Not sure how good data logging is from the app or if the data is even useful at that point.
Scale Setups
- 1 scale for dosing + 1 scale for brewing make your life easier
- multiscale setups prevent you from dropping scales
- A bigger scale to dose and a scale with a timer for brewing are recommended. Though you don't need a big scale if you use a portafilter stand.
I got my GDEALER and Blackmirror from Amazon and got the Acaia Lunar from a local cafe.

You can also pick up the GDEALER and Black Mirror off AliExpress for cheaper. I believe the GDEALER comes in many variants of a generic scale design.

Next up I'll be talking about Paper Moon Helios (my favorite blend)! I'll be reviewing it using shots pulled on the Gaggia Classic Pro and Decent DE1 Pro. After that, I'll be talking about the GCP vs. DE1 or really, what do you actually get when you leave the entry-level world of espresso machines. Thanks for watching and reading!

I'm considering the TIMEMORE B22, after returning my Apexstone. My experience is most of the sub $25 scales suffer from taring inaccuracies (often 2g-4g) especially if the container is moved off and placed back on the scale. Extremely frustrating. Certainly if I had a $3,500+ prosumer or commercial espresso machine then I have no problem justifying a $200 scale.

Hi, Brian! What issues are you experiencing with Acaia's support? I manage the global support team and would be happy to follow up with any questions. The battery life for the Lunar is 3-5 years, depending on the frequency of use. The battery is replaceable, but an Acaia support team member or authorized reseller must perform the replacement. Unfortunately, we had to move away from customers replacing their own batteries due to a high number of customers damaging their scales in the process.

  • @tonyatacaia

@@Caffeine.And.Carvings a lot of it has to do with how scales operate. If the wires are not placed correctly and bow out touching both the base and shell, it creates an additional contact point causing an inaccurate weight reading. Our team wants to ensure you are experiencing accuracy and precision with each brew and are happy to assist in any way we can. Again, we originally provided replacement batteries but had to stop due installations being performed incorrectly. We included written instructions showing photos, and a video example of the repair. If a customer did not follow the instructions it would lead to further frustration and poor experience with the product. We want you to be more than happy with product so we do our best to take care of you when experiencing an issue with the scale.

Almost pulled the trigger on Acaia, did not anticipate this part (!) Given the popularity (and expected longevity) of your products, sounds like you still have room to develop a better system for new models. Even smartphone makers are now being pushed for right to repair and easy battery replacement.

Thanks for having all three together. I would buy the BM if they ever come up with a smaller version; this one is way too big and thick. I has a GDealer and I weigh the coffee in a cup and dump in the portafilter. BTW, the new BM has auto timer function.

I'm wondering when they'll make one too. I think Timemore has always been geared towards pourovers but I think now they're seeing bigger interest from espresso guys. It doesn't seem like my version of the black mirror has auto timing/taring :( I tried tapping the time icon 10x really fast and I couldn't get it to work.

  • @orangachang

I just picked up the black mirror... and like you mentioned in the flexi top might be causing some inaccuracies. • @BrianQuan

    @BrianQuan

I don't think there's a way to adjust but you can try placing your cup closer to the middle. Also a difference of .03/.04 is not going to really impact your overall extraction.

I have a cheaper E61 and there is still overhang. I could turn it sideways, or get gdealer and use a timer. I could afford the Acacia but it would have to be at the expense of so much other gear I want and need. If you can't tell, I am a very late adapter to dosing by weight and extraction by weight. I think in the end I will go GDealer and 5$ kitchen timer. Also one day and soon there will be a real Lunar killer, and I dont want to feel dumb paying a quarter of 1K$ on a scale.

Lunar is very quality scale. I love it and have owned one for 3-4yrs. Except, at this price point ($225-$250 USD) I would expect there to be a visible battery level icon shown on the scale, like what’s on a common mobile phone. There is nothing more frustrating than dosing and pulling an espresso shot to suddenly see “Lo Batt” flashing and the scale goes dark, right during the extraction. Of course, by then it’s already too late… Please Acaia take note to add this feature in the future. If I had known this to be lacking, I would have made a different buying decision.
