Having used cheap scales and owning a Lunar 2021 and a Pearl S, I can say without reservation that the Acaia products blow everything else out of the water. It’s a very different experience. The Apple comparison is an apt one; the scales are beautifully made, sleek, intuitive, full - featured, and they just work. All the time. Firmware updates constantly improve their already phenomenal functioning, and they are one coffee accessory that I just don’t have to think or worry about. What I have never been able to understand is that I know of people who resent Acaia prices while they spend thousands on a Decent or a LM. 🙄

I agree; yes it is expensive, and Acaia, as a company, is not a pleasure to deal with, and, to boot, sort of a kick in the pants having to deal with a learning curve with a scale; all that being said, it is, far and away, the best scale I've ever owned, and I use it constantly!

I just received mine last week and absolutely love it. Super sleek design, programmable features are really nice and functional and accuracy is on point. It's expensive and maybe even a little excessive as there are probably other cheaper options but if you have the funds and like nice equipment it's a no brainer imo

Do you know when CY will have the lower cost single dose modification finished?

I’m tempted but it’s crazy expensive ($339 on sale on Australia or $389 with plate). Apparently the battery only lasts 3-5 years before you need to send it back for a replacement which I’m not too keen about (I’m sure at a premium cost…). It’s only a matter of time before I close my eyes and click “buy” on this but yeah, that’s a lot of cash for a set of scales. I just upgraded my machine (Lelit Bianca) and scales are something I touch each time I brew… so maybe it’s worth it (I just want the quality to be there and longevity at this price).

Thanks Hoon! IMHO, Acaia scale though pricy is a wonderful gadget. By all means, not necessary to get it as other less expensive brands work great as well. In my case, I use both Acai Lunar (to measure coffee grounds and portafilter) and the Acai Pyxis to place under the grouphead. (Simplicity sake) It's really up to you if you prefer to invest that much. I think many of us are at some point guilty of investing in something much more expensive than needed just because we like it or we simply want it. :)

@Jackie Liu Hi! I would choose the Lunar as it is a little bigger and can be used to weigh the portafilter, pour overs, and it also fits in the drip tray.

I have both the cheap Gdealer scale together with the Acaia Lunar. To be honest I love the cheap scale much more instead. Although it is cheap but i find it works great even if it is not as accurate as the Acaia but at least it serve its function well. I do not worry if I drop or anything, it is so easy to replace if it is spoil. I am using it at great ease and not worry so much about the scale being spoil, scratch, water drip into the lcd or anything.

I don’t know. I just can’t justify spending so much for the scale. On the other hand, it would make work flow better. Who knows, maybe I will buy it for myself for Christmas.

... if you are only making espresso just get a Baratza Sette 270wi which has an acaia scale built in. For home use more than enough. I use it in combination with a Bezzera DUO DE. Perfect workflow and very even results, every single time! :-)

@@HoonsCoffee Thank you for answering and greetings from Austria :-) Since we know, that you will be looking to get a double boiler sooner or later, I would recommend my machine, too. Double boiler with PID and programmable volumetric buttons. Plumbable with rotary pump and Bezzera's electrically heated grouphead for good temperature stability. I had an issue with a valve once, which had to get fixed in the shop (covered by the warranty), but apart from that, the machine seems to be pretty well built. Though it might not be the one, if you do not like digital displays... :-)

Hi Hoon and Heather, why have you changed from using 17.5g of beans to now only 19.5g of coffee?? Any specific reasoning?

@@HoonsCoffee What filter basket were you using when you recommended 17.5g? I watched a lot of videos where you stated several times that you liked 17.5g in lieu of 18g. I have the 14g - 18g IMS basket and have used 19g at times and it will take that amount, but 19.5g is a bit too much. The IMS has almost eliminated channeling for me. I prepare my basket almost identical to your approach (puck rake) and use the Crema 53.3 distributor/tamper and very seldom get any channeling. Your videos have help me tremendously, thanks!!

Your recommendation for all the products you review starts with "if coffee is you hobby". Would be so much more useful to show the features and show how it helps you if coffee is your hobby. Then we can decide. As I mentioned in a previous comment, better planning and more thoughtful content would be appreciated.

Hoon, you are comparing an entry-level $10 item to a state-of-the-art $250 item. That's a ridiculous comparison. There are many serviceable timers within that vast $10 - $250 gap. Here's a suggestion: do a comparison on the top-of-the-line Slayer espresso machine to an entry-level steam-powered (name the brand) "espresso" maker. In order of importance, the three top priorities should be a good grinder, a good espresso machine, and a decent tamper. It's abundantly clear that Acaia has treated you well, and you are returning the favor. A $250 timer will not make a significant difference in one's coffee-making skills.
