Acaia Lunar Coffee Scale Overview

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Acaia's Lunar scale is likely the most unanimously loved piece of coffee equipment out there. But what makes it so special? It all comes down to design and brilliant software. clivecoffee.com/products/acai...

    Is the selected mode retained between use? I.e. if I'm in auto-tare with auto-start timer when it sees a change, does it stay that way when next turned on? Or do you have to switch to that mode every time?

    How do you find the scale handling hot water poured on it? I.E. if I were to flush the group head and water just poured right onto the scales, can it handle that? It would be nice to have something essentially embedded so I don’t have to remove the scales all the time

    If using the first setting. You use that setting to weight an empty portafilter? Then fill the portafilter with grounds and weigh it again, using the same setting? That means the operator then has to add the difference in weight to double check the accuracy of their grinder?

    thanks for this; how many seconds should a good espresso shot run in auto mode? 20-25 secs?

  • @clivecoffee

    @clivecoffee

    4 жыл бұрын

    20 - 25 seconds is a good approximate answer. Considering that drop time for a decent shot is reliably between 5-10 seconds, a 20 - 25 second duration from that first drop is bound to yield favorable results. - Charles

    Can you clarify shot timing? I’ve seen a variety for definitions of when to start the “20 to 30 seconds” to a perfect shot; when the water first touches the coffee (which would include pre-infusion), when the pump starts, and when the espresso first starts to flow. Sometimes there are even seemingly contradictory statements in the same article or video so I’d like to see a clear and consistent definition.

  • @clivecoffee

    @clivecoffee

    4 жыл бұрын

    The way that we measure it, along with the majority of coffee professionals, is from the moment that water touches coffee. This is the same for any brew method because once water touches coffee extraction has begun. Since the purpose of timing any brew method is to time the duration of the extraction, it only makes sense to start at the very beginning. I hope that clears this up for you! - Charles

  • @CraigStocksArts

    @CraigStocksArts

    @@clivecoffee That makes sense, but even the Clive Coffee "How to Pull the Perfect Shot" guide states to start the timer when you hear the pump start, so that wouldn't include pre-infusion. Hence my suggestion for a standard and consistent phrase to be used throughout to avoid confusion.

    Clive Coffee Would you keep that definition in the case of long pre-infusion time (15 or 20 seconds for example), so that would let only 10 to 15 seconds for the espresso to pour into the cup ?

    So when using an Ecm synchronika. Question 1: When the operator flips the lever and the espresso machine's timer begins on the display screen, water to grounds takes place. By the end of 30 seconds, the desire of the barista is to have a finished extraction weight, for a double shot, to be around 56-57grams? This is when using the Acaia Luna scale to measure the liquid weight, yes? Question 2: What if the ECM Synchronika has a flow control device? And the barista does a low water pressure pre-infusion for a duration of 5-8 seconds? At which there would be no liquid being extracted out from the portafilter during this 5-8 seconds. Therefore, would this 5-8 second pre-infusion count toward or as part of the total 30 second time period; used for the extraction of a 56-57gram double shot? Final Question 3: For either extraction method (found in questions 1 and 2), would the grind size differ, need to be adjusted, or would the grind size stay the same? Thanks for clarification

    Is it really worth the $200 price tag though? Can’t say whether it is or not, but my guess would be that it’s good looks and fancy programmes doesn’t necessarily mean better coffee being made than using a more basic set of scales. Sexy looking piece of kit but not sure I’ll be buying one any time soon

    hey, how does this compare to the new PYXIS?

  • @eltonnoway7864

    @eltonnoway7864

    3 жыл бұрын

    The Pyxis is half the size of the lunar, which makes it ideal for machines like the Robot, Flair Espresso, or Rok that have limited space under the portafilter spouts . The size makes it good for traveling but it's to small for my usage. You can't put two espresso cups on it at the same time, nor a portafilter handle... or even a coffee brewer because it's only 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" (6.5cm x 6.5cm)! Compare? The Lunar has 6 program modes, while the Pyxis only has three. Because the Pyxis is half the size of the Lunar... that also means the internal rechargeable battery is also half the size of the battery in the Lunar which translates to more frequent charging. Speaking of Cons... I can't believe they just rolled out this newly designed Pyxix yet it uses antiquated Micro USB USB for charging and running is Bluetooh Version 4. Yikes!

    The Felicita ARC scale compares equally head to head with Acais Lunar and at almost 40% less cost. The LED numerals are larger and brighter on the ARC than on the dimmer Acaia. Additionally, the ARC has an awesome Bluetooth feature laden app that is smooth operating and a joy to use. Also the Acaia is too narrow to accommodate every portafillter. You must purchase $30 accessory shelf that sits on the Acaia. What a pain to have to use the shelf and pay for it. The Acaia is over priced and delivers a lot less for the buck.

    Acaia's Software has a bug and is not as brilliant as mentioned in the video overview by Clive Coffee. As mentioned in my earlier comment, I did a firmware update when I received my scale (March 2024) and the scale froze at 89% of the update. I contacted Clive who were nice but couldn't provide a reset fix for the problem. They told me to contact Acaia which I did and they finally sent me a procedure to reset the scale. However, after trying the procedure at least a dozen times without success, I finally realized that there is no fix to reset the scale. Acaia said they would refer me to someone local (I live in Italy but was in the US visiting my family and wanted to purchase the scale after viewing the review provided by Clive Coffee). In addition, I felt that Clive has good customer service after reading all the reviews. Clive did offer to replace the scale but only if I was still in the US, which I am not. I returned to Italy on the 9th of March where I performed the firmware update that resulted in a frozen scale. I will now have to pay shipping to send the scale back to Clive for a refund. I understand the internal policies of Clive regarding shipping, however, I still paid 250 USD for a scale that doesn't work in spite of the advertising that says "brilliant software"! It is a mystery as to why Acaia provided an expensive scale with software that can't be reset in a few simple steps. In addition, neither Acaia nor Clive have been able to solve this problem via tech support? Not really worth the time and expense that I have had to go through....but believe me, I would have loved for it to work as advertised. Therefore, I cannot recommend this "gadget" to anyone.

    I just bought a new lunar scale from Clive on March 1, 2024. I did a firmware update immediately to insure the latest software version was installed. During the update the lunar scale froze and wouldn’t finish the update. Now the scale will not operate and remains frozen. I called Clive for assistance but they referred me to Acacia. To date I still have no response from tech support. End result is I have no working scale for my coffee. I expected more from this lunar scale…for 250 dollars! Not a happy customer 🤬

    I cringed a bit when I saw you picking that calibration weight up with your fingers. Any device this precise needs a reliable calibration weight and oils from the hand will slightly change it over time. Always wear gloves or use some other method of ensuring that the calibration weight remains free of oils or any added weight.

    I've read that you shouldn't breathe in the same room as a calibration weight, as the emitted carbon dioxide will erode its surface over time. Always wear a polymeric nonventilating respiration device to ensure the calibration weight remains consistent for the next few centuries at least!
