I like Cafe Bustelo instant. Better than Nescafe or whatever, cheaper than Starbucks via or Waka. The thing about making real coffee on trail, it's not just the small weight of the brew basket thing, but also the weight of the coffee itself. Freeze-dried FTW!

Cowboy coffee is the best and easiest. Pretty simple. Boil and shock. Pour into cup and no grains if you do it right.

That’s a neat little gizmo for sure. I often backpack for many days and clean-up is a factor for me. I use a cheap metal enamel cowboy cup like you might get at Walmart. I boil my water right in my cup and add the instant coffee to it. Being a metal cup you will need those cheap brown gloves many of us carry on the trail to hold it. Also on cold mornings it’s your hand warmer. My coffee isn’t the best but not the worst either. I use either those little instant packets that Folgers sells most of the time. Very little trash and easy storage. Sometimes I have the Folger single coffee bags, ok but now more trash to get rid of. After a few days in the woods that little straw of Folger instant crytals taste pretty good! Ha Ha! Another thing with me I like a bit of milk in my coffee. So I have powdered milk with me for my cereal and always make enough to add to my coffee. I’m 73, and still hiking. Years ago as a Boy Scout lad I used powdered milk. In those days it was pretty horrible. Nowadays it’s pretty good!!! Light and easy to carry too. I keep one of those little yogurt cups in my pack to mix it with. Most of those are exactly 1 cup too so there’s your measuring cup for other stuff. Really enjoy your channel. Keep up the gear testing.

I'm a cold brew drinker, but I don't feel like dealing with it on the trail (especially because I like lots of cream and sugar)....So my routine is hot Carnation chocolate instant breakfast drink so that I have a hot beverage, and then I eat a handful of chocolate covered espresso beans for the caffeine.

I'm liking that Brew Buddy idea. Right now I use Folgers coffee singles. Like the DIY teabags, but purpose made & sealed. If you find they aren't strong enough, you can just let them steep a while longer.

Bought the Primula based on your review. Best and easiest coffee I ever had on trail. Simple, light, fits in my Toaks 1100ml pot along with a bunch of other stuff. Sure, the coarse filter gives the coffee a little texture (not grounds, but not liquid either) but man is it good. Thanks for solving my coffee routine for me!

I bought a Stanley French Press, I use it for both tea and coffee plus I forgot a spoon once and it strained the soup so I could use a fork to eat the noodles and rice.

Hi - love your videos - this is the third in a row and made me laugh so much because I too love my coffee in the morning. I recently had 7 days backpacking in the wilderness of Tasmania and I took Lavazza Instant Prontissimo! espresso (new product here in Australia) with me - it was good enough to look forward to every morning! Saving on space and weight were priority - and minimising waste material to pack out - so the instant coffee was perfect solution.

Loved your Video as I SO love a rich cup of coffee ... or two, in the morning well on trail! I have the MSR insulated mug like you have so I use the MSR coffee mug mate. It is a micro screen and sits right on the top of the MSR Mug. It is really similar to the net style but smaller. Try it! Makes a great cup of coffee.

I've been using these little pour over thingies that attach over your cup. They are really cheap and almost no weight. I do use the little creamer cups and keep them in a zip lock bag with the rest of the coffee stuff. Haven't popped one yet! Its a little more work than I would like but very light and very cheap!!

Nice to see the options. Only negative I can see for brew buddy is clean up. Also these setup will require two containers. One to boil water then to pour into another container. Possibly the aero press would fix this problem since you use inverted method. Nevertheless it has me thinking of adding another item to try out

The best way for light weight coffee making is just by boiling it. Fill your cooking pot to the desired water level. pour loose grounds to completely cover the water in a layer of floating grounds. Turn on stove or place over heat until boiling. Boil for one to two minutes to desired strength. The boiling helps to percolate the coffee grounds throughout the water. Immediately remove from Heat and set you're cooking pot on the ground. Poor no more than half an ounce of cold water into the center of your cooking pot with the coffee in it from about hip height. Allow coffee to cool a little bit and all your grounds will be settled at the bottom. Slowly pour your delicious coffee into your drinking tool of choice until you get to the bottom and you start seeing grounds coming out of your cooking pot. Discard the rest of whatever is in your cooking pot and enjoy your nice cup of coffee.

My favorite part about it is I don't need to carry any extra wait to have good coffee. It tends to not be bitter. And clean up is relatively easy because all I have to do is knock loose grounds out of my pot, then wipe up any remaining grounds.

That applies to me with a caveat. It has got to be GOOD coffee. Instant won't suffice. Neither will the robusta-bean-doped trash that is sold under brand names in American supermarkets (tastes like it was brewed from floor sweepings). For that matter, there are some arabica beans that aren't all that great. But all of the really good coffees that I've drank were brewed from single-origin arabica beans. My favorite right now is Ethiopian Sidamo Guji in a light roast. I began brewing a pot of it right before I noticed this video, and it's ready now.

If you love the coffee flavor and the caffeine, but are concerned about the extra weight, I HIGHLY recommend Grinds Coffee Pouches. Disclaimer: they look live chewing tobacco pouches... but they are filled with only coffee grounds (means you don't have to spit constantly either). I always bring a tin when I go backpacking!
