Coffee Culture - 1957

Some shots I took for the University Capping Mag in 1957. They illustrated a story about a rapidly developing new obsession with coffee and the places to drink it! The 'places' were called coffee bars, and they came in various guises. The Attic in Cashel Street, Christchurch New Zealand was one of the first, and it rapidly developed a reputation with the students at Canterbury University College. My models were students from the Fine Art School and College House - they preferred to remain anonymous, and at least two or three went on to fame and fortune ...

    I like to time travel on youtube and the videos of this channel are a cut above the average. A lot of old videos focus on automobile traffic and architecture while this channel shows a more human side of the past. That coffee culture in this video would not cut it in today's sensitive and politically correct me too culture. Drinking coffee until two in the morning will also guarantee a sleepless night.
