Coeliac disease is different for everyone

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition affecting 1 in 100 people in the UK. Currently only 36% of them are medically diagnosed leaving an estimated 500,000 living with undiagnosed coeliac disease and the risk of developing long term health complications. Our mission for Coeliac Awareness Week 2023 is to reach the 500,000 people to encourage them to ask ‘could it be coeliac disease?’.
Coeliac disease is different for everyone, and our campaign looks at the wider set of symptoms beyond the more common ‘gut related issues’ to help join the dots and speed up the path to diagnosis. Following a call to our community, five amazing people came forward to share their experiences.

I was previously ignorant of Coeliac Disease until I saw the reaction to Sharleen Spiteri appearing on BBC Saturday Kitchen. She clearly told the chef that she has Coeliac Disease, but he gave her gluten cheese on toast to eat anyway. 😮
