"David" written by: Meredith Cody Jinks (Late August Publishing, BMI)
Lyrics:
My friend David, was a good kid
He had my back, always knew he did
He was different than most
And maybe I was too
Hanging out with the in-crowd just wasn’t our thing
There was a whole lot more
Than we could see on these plains
Well, some people just seem to get stuck, and hang around
It’s college or trade school for those with the means
There’s never been any small town for those in between
Yeah the poor folks they go to work, or they go to war
I did fifteen hundreds days in the corps
And I got back, nothing looked the same anymore
I got on with the local police, it just seemed to fit
Things have changed
By then David had a daughter and a son
And a rap sheet to prove all the time that he’d done
He was just a burned out beat down shell of my old friend
And on a three day binge he was speeding through town
And I bumped the wailers just to try and slow him down
He didn’t know that it was me, and he took off
Oh how things change
And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain I don’t know if he’d drowned
Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
Is that his mama’s a late night ER nurse
And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind
David’s wife drops by every once in a while
And childhood stories always make her smile
But somehow we always go back to that day
And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain, I don’t know if he’d drowned
Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
Is that his mama’s a late night ER nurse
And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind
Ain’t it the times
Cody Jinks: Lead vocal & acoustic guitar
Jon Wallace: Guitars
Earl Darling: Drums & percussion
Milo Deering: Steel, Fiddle, Dobro
Joshua Thompson: Bass & background vocals

I lost my son in 2009. He was killed by a drunk driver and thrown 35 feet, he was 82nd Airborne. They could not locate him for about 20 minutes. A devastating tragedy & heart every day. My son came back from war different as many of our veterans do. I fight hard for our veterans & their children daily. David, your life was not in vain. I miss you every day & can't wait to see you again. Always 29. ARB X29 God had a bigger plan for you. Keep watch over us, son. Now you have your brother right by your side. Ma to two Angels protecting from above. I love and miss you sooo, sooo very much Dave and Vin. God bless our children and keep them all in your loving care.

My David lived 2.5 hrs away. I begged him over the phone to not get behind the wheel after a bottle of whiskey and an ambien or two. He hit a culvert, flew, and landed straight on his roof. I was only about 30 minutes behind the police and half drunk. The way me and his mama cried at the crime scene tape gets me every day. When we watched that wrecker pull that truck was even worse.

This song definitely hits home. the day of senior prom a friend of mine that I had know since the 3rd grade he was on his way to help us set up for prom. fell asleep at the wheel flipped and rolled his truck several times and a mailbox post went through the driver seat head rest and by some miracle of god he was thrown into the passenger seat and ended up surviving the accident.

That song just fks me up. The people we've lost over the past ten years makes me think God is harvesting souls by the acre. The first half of our lives is spent taking people for granted and the second half of our lives is spent losing everyone we love.😢

Lost my 14 year old son April 2023 and one of his Best Friends posted this song, now I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out cause that first verse matches perfectly. His friend said, "It would've been David going and making something out of himself though, while I stayed back in the small town going down the wrong road. David was the only thing that kept me from going too far off track. " 😭😭😭😭

As a singer and guitar strummer, Ive never performed a song before that makes me feel a sense of dread like I do performing this song. The musical build-up before the second verse and the way the second verse builds up to the chorus. It gives me chills every time I perform it. Geniusly written.

The best you can do while out on the field, is to provide them the support available. The rest is up to them, whether they want the help or not. From experience, you cant force anyone into getting help, and you cant fix stupid neither. But so long as you do everything you can to help someone, regardless of the outcome at the end of the day, thats what matters. Its a testament to your role in your community as well as your personal character, that you wont sit idly by as acts of evil are carried out. Stay strong there, brother.

I’ve been finding a lot of songs lately that have reminded me of my recent wreck a month ago, this one was by far the worst because of the lyric “it must’ve rolled three times” because that’s the exact thing I did, hit a ditch at about 170kph which is probably what broke my back, rolled 3 times and ended up on the passenger side, got my seatbelt off, dropped to the passenger door, managed to climb out of the car and made it maybe 3-4 steps away before I dropped to the floor, tried to get up to grab my phone out the car but couldn’t feel my legs didn’t take long for the adrenaline to wear off, no clue how long I was lying there screaming before someone came down the same road and called it in but the wait for the paramedics was the worst part, they got me straight in the ambulance and on ket, almost got put in a helicopter, been out of hospital 3 days now, stood up for the first time 4 days ago, still figuring out how to walk properly and I’m gonna be stuck with nerve pain for the rest of my life but somehow for some reason im still alive.

Shits crazy. I've been in quite a few wrecks with drinkin bros n thank God we've got outta almost all of em unscarred. There was once a bottle of Devils Cut Jim Bean, that was in a truck which got stuck between two trees. We got her out but that was the last day she rode the streets of our small town. We took the sign with us in the bed after we finished the bottle. The funniest part was when he'd turn with the airbag😂

I have no idea what you're going through, and I won't pretend I do, but you're worth staying alive. I bet you have at least 1 person who would be devastated if you died, so please stay alive for them. One thing I was told back when I was suicidal was to think about somewhere you want to be in the future or something you want to do, then focus on it and focus on getting there. I know the world can feel really fricken dark at times, and it can feel like the weight of the world is closing down on you. But please, you gotta keep trying day by day until you can feel the light again. Sometimes better days are just a moment away. Keep surviving until one day you find yourself feeling alive again. I hope you're doing better and that you're having a good day today. If you're not having a good day, go look at the sky, it's pretty, even on rainy days❤

My older brother David is facing life in prison we used to build our dodges together he had a hemi I had a 4.7 and now it’s just me building a truck by myself and there is nothing I can do about it. I listen to this song everyday. Miss you big bro ❤ fuck texas and fuck the system

My god this song reminds me of a few months ago. My big brother was in an accident that totaled then car. He slipped on some gravel on a hill and lost control of the car. He rolled the car at least 2-3 times. The only thing we knew was that my mom called my dad and said that my big brother was in an accident. I love my big brother to death and It scared the ever loving hell out of me. Thankfully when we got there he was ok and wasn’t hurt by the grace of God. There wasn’t a scratch on him. Now like I said though the car was completely totaled

With that said, I’m happy there are people who it does resonate with me. The verse about his mom being the nurse just seemed ridiculous. His mom almost lost her mind? That’s quite an understatement. Most moms I know would be inconsolable. You “almost lose your mind” when someone cuts you off in traffic or you find out your love was cheating on you. That really pissed me off
