Coding Bootcamps: Are They Worth It? Tech Elevator Review, Job Prospects, and Salary

Ғылым және технология

This is the story of how I came into the field of software engineering. I tell the story of my coding bootcamp experience at Tech Elevator, my time working as a climbing gym manager, and university experience and the problems with it. This doubles as a coding bootcamp review.
I am hoping to build a community of bootcamp students, recent grads, and other baby software developers and software engineers in order to bring people together, talk about developments in the software and technology industries, and chart a better course for the field. Coding Bootcamp Two Years Later. Developer Journey.

    Starting tech elevator boot camp in April funded through Amazon’s career choice program. It’s a year long program because the pace will be slower to accommodate people with full time jobs at Amazon. I appreciate the insight into the program. I’ve graduated with CS degree in Summer 2023 and was completely unprepared for a job as the school I went to did not teach much of any technical skills and instead spent most of my time learning theoretical knowledge about computer science. I’m hoping tech elevator charges that for me.

    Heeeeey fellow Amazonian 🥹❤️...I did the software developer certification with correlation one last year, thinking of doing this one as well. We'll probably retread over stuff I already learned but the correlation one class was only like 4 months long compared to this being a year long.

    Thank you for this, it was very informative. I just moved back home (Cleveland, Ohio) and have been wanting to change my career for years. I love tech and have been wanting to go into the field for some time now, so I finally pulled the trigger. I looked around the area and found Tech Elevator, and just like you, I was very impressed with their testimonials. I really enjoyed their application process of testing you on your problem solving/pattern recognition skills. I just got the news that I've been accepted and should be starting in January. I'm definitely excited to give everything I have to this due to reaaallyy wanting to turn my life around and finally pursue my interests.

Everyone keeps saying this program is very rigorous and hearing this worries me and makes me not want to do it for fear of wasting my time (and causing unnecessary stress) if it doesn't pan out financially. On the plus side, my job is paying for the program (ours is a year-long not 14 weeks, assuming they changed the length?) so I am fortunate to not have to pay myself. I guess we'll see how things go for me in a few more weeks. Thanks for sharing this video!

    You can do it! I'm planning on doing a longer video about ADHD and software engineering but I need to refine my video making skills a bit before I dive into it. The things that helped me the most going through mine were consistent schedules and exercise! I would usually take a 30-45 minute break after lecture and then would finish the homeworks before I did anything else! I also tried to move every other day at least, just burn off the extra energy that forms when you sit in lecture!

    Coding bootcamps are not worth it because most employers still require a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Graduates are going struggle finding work if they think bootcamps are all they need to land a job in highly competitive tech industries.

  • @EthicalTechie

    @EthicalTechie

    Жыл бұрын

    It’s probably been through a few iterations since I took it, but there was no specific conceptual math when I went through! It was lots of pattern recognition, which shape is the most different etc as well as word problems that are more about pulling out the important info than doing any crazy math. Usually just basic arithmetic, maybe a bit of really basic algebra, like turning word problem info into variables and adding available info in to find what info you weren’t given. There are probably lots of ways to go about those too, they’re all way more logic problems than math problems! As for studying, I’d honestly do a bunch of brain-teaser type puzzles and pattern puzzles to get your problem solving brain sharp and go for it! You can also check their posts on LinkedIn, if I remember right they used to post a few sample questions here and there to spark interest in it.

    I'm mostly working in the MERN stack right now and I love it. Javascript gets a bad rap a lot of the time but having it all in the same language is really nice for data structures and fast development IMO! I had to write some Java a few months ago and it was pulling teeth, everything just is so slow, but I do get the appeal with how much is already written in it. I had to do it for some data extraction work, as javascript just really doesn't hold up for those type of applications.

    I should say, when I talk about JS it’s actually always typescript 😆 it saves you from yourself with lots of common errors, and makes finding and fixing bugs WAY easier.
