Coconut Oil Candles

Hi guys,
Today I did an experiment to try to make coconut oil candles and see how they would burn. I used both refined and unrefined coconut oil in this experiment. Watch to see the results!

Coconut oil is amazing. The refined oil i'd definitely use for making scented candles and lanterns Or a 2:1 mixer for longer brighter flame

Very small tea lights. hehe. I am not sure it matters about the tempeture if you do not add anything to it. I have started to make my own tea lights using Coco nut wax blend. Using a large pot with a little bit of water in.let it simmer and then I put my thick glass container with a handle in. Keeping an eye on it and stir regular. When it all has melted.I pore it in to my 8 hour tin candle holders I saved from an old tea light. Thanks for the video.I will try that to.

This helped soooo much in my research. I guess beeswax would make the wax stronger or is there another way to make them stronger.

IDK. I think that I would probably choose the refined oil for the fact that it is a brighter flame. Although the unrefined burned longer it gave out much less light and it is a little bit more expensive than the refined. I think cost/usage wise it would be pretty close to a wash.

very valid point, I didn't think of it from that perspective. and if you make a larger candle using a small mason jar and twine (or something like that) it should last for a while since the tealight version burned for almost 2 hours!

it was fun an easy! I had seen were people tried using olive oil or cisco to see how well it would burn for an emergency candle, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try coconut oil!

interestingly enough I tried out extra virgin coconut oil to make candles a few days ago and they burned for just over 4 hours.

Maybe make one bigger that will fit a Sterno stove. That way you can heat food when you don't have power.

the wick is longer, thats why the flame was bigger..

  • @ManNomad

To be honest, I would say you could evenly match the performance by changing the wick size to the volatility.

how does a bit bigger candles burn? seems like the wick will just fall into the candle and drown if it was taller.

Dear You use coconut oil or coconut wax ? As I know, coconut oil show the liquid form, not the solid at room temperature. Hope to see your reply soon

I used coconut oil. It liquefies at 76°F, until then it's in a solid form. I use it all the time in homemade lotion bars and absolutely love it.
