Lovely review! I have worn the EDP while I went through a very dramatic phase in my life. I had issues at my job, and had to start a war with my boss, to be able to concour the situation. I chose this scent to accompany me to the front and trenches. Because it's so comforting and out there at the same time. I get mostly the insence and smoky vanilla out of it, just perfection. At that time I needed to be strong and Coco really helped me. With her, I could go to battle, for weeks and weeks. She empowered me, everytime I put her on. You're absolutely right about how it can attract people, or totally repell them. That's exactly what she did for me, on multiple levels. The right people surrounded me and complimented me on my perfume. The one person I wanted to shut out of my life and needed a wakeup call that I didn't allow him to bully and control me, will definitely remember me by my scent. I hope that everytime he gets a whiff of my dear Coco, he'll be reminded of me. For that, and many other reasons, Coco will stay close to my heart.

I LOVE that you classify it as Baroque! Coco has been my signature scent since I was 15. I think it’s one that not everyone can carry well (because it requires a certain style and sophistication to wear), so many people don’t appreciate it. So glad you and others on this page, also love it!

We were getting dressed and she took out of her suitcase a silk scarf to unfold a huge bottle of Coco, she sprayed on herself and sweetly told me, "here, have some". Just snagged a bottle of the edt, so happy! :) This beauty is Autumn in a bottle for me, the leaves changing, a cool bite in the air, Halloween and fireside light down the pub with my amber ales. There is something ethereal about this magical brew, a song always pops into my head when I wear this as way back in 2010 my ex-fiancé gave me a bottle of the edp for Christmas as this particular song played in the background of the pub we were in, the song is called "Lady Eleanor" and is by Lindisfarne. I think the song somehow captures the spirit of the fragrance but I might just be projecting :) My mum and my best friend (she was also my former boss) wear this in edp but I can't wear that concentration just yet, I feel like I'd be stealing their scent :) Fabulous review as always Dacob, you always do justice to these beauties :) Thank you darling :) xxx

Wonderful review Super Dacob! I watched your review a year ago when I was wearing the parfum version, and hadn't tried the EDT or EDP in years. I wanted a softer version of Coco so I just bought the EDT (batch code 0501). I can't compare this current EDT to older EDT releases since I never had any (although I remember not liking how it smelled when I was near someone wearing it). However, I can give you my impressions of this one: It starts off a bit sharp and thin, and at first I thought, oh no. ...I am not going to like this. But OHHH!!!!.....after 20 minutes it softens and thickens, and warms up to a creamy, Woody, balsamic, oriental with just the right amount of sweetness. Gone is the brashness and over-the-top strength and screechiness that I recall from smelling it years ago. Here is a sensuous yet elegant concoction of the fruits, flowers, resins, and spices that to me, is very beautiful, and very Chanel. Thank you for inspiring me to try the EDT !!

I just had the most amazing experience with Coco! I’ve purchased it today, mostly under your influence. Coming back home after a nice time with friends. I accept myself, it accepts myself. It’s glorious and liberating! Thank you for your reviews

It's definitely been reformulated but not too badly, in my opinion. Coco still very much smells of itself, and it's still a beautiful perfume. I think the EdT and EdP are similar enough that I could wear either, although I think I slightly prefer the EdT as it's less plummy sweet and dense (but if that's your thing, the EdP is the way to go). They both smell familiar, sufficiently modernized for a younger crowd without entirely losing their souls. I haven't smelled the extrait but I hear it's a doozy. The EdT is perfectly wearable in the summer, I think. It really isn't a heavy scent, and only mildly sweet. It's mostly a powdery tropical floral on my skin, with a dusting of plum and a woody rasp.

Great review as always. You always deliver. :) Coco is indeed the most interesting fragrance I have ever tried. I just got it as a birthday gift from my mum. As I'm living in Singapore which is summer all year round, it still doesn't feel strange to me to wear this scent. The longevity of this edp on me is insane! Even after I ran 8km and after a bath, I could still get a very faint whiff of the scent on my skin. It's as if the perfume is part of me. I love it! I'm not sure is it my skin chemistry that causes the perfume to last THAT long on me... I don't know... Of course, I still use my Chanel No 5 EDP. Have gone through 3 bottles of it & halfway through the 4th.

I *love* your explanation for why Coco smells the way that it does! I love it. Coco smells like Christmas to me (I think the combo of the spice, cloves, and orange?), and it smells like a great aunt. I want a tiny little bottle of Coco for when I want to channel a Dynasty woman. Coco is ready to dominate, but it's warm at the same time. It changes over a long, long time; the final stage reminds me of a classier Old Spice! It's such a perfect representation of a time when women adopted more traditionally male fashions and attitudes (see shoulder pads, Madonna, and the ladies of Dynasty) to say "We've made it! The boys' club will never be the same! We can be as powerful and crafty as you - in fact, we can do it better, since you are so easy to manipulate." Coco is a woman who will seduce a man on a (tasteful) bearskin rug (in her ski chalet), then perform corporate espionage by sorting through his briefcase before he wakes up in the morning. She's always seen through a soft-focus lens. She is an older woman, but that's only because you must have experience to be cunning. Yes, she is a grown-ass woman. I'm not sure I want to be Coco when I grow up, but I definitely want her on my team.

Dear Erin, thanks for the great comment! Glad you liked my video! :) and lets just not forget one thing: COCO is worn by more and more men each day (including myself. By the way, I just hunted down a pue parfum bottle of COCO and will be making a review of it very soon as well). Long gone are the days (and thank goodness for that) where perfumes were bond tight to the gender they were originally marketed to. People are waking up and realizing how silly it is to limit themselves... who says a flower scent should only be worn by women and who says leather and tobacco scents should only be worn by men? In fact... if we really dig deep into Chanel's own revolutionary past, what did she do already back in the twenties? Well, she broke the gender scheme by introducing a fragrance called "Russian Leather" (CUIR DE RUSSIE) to the market and selling it to women! She broke all taboos back then! So powerful! Unfortunately almost no other brand followed her but today we are finally ready to accept the fact that as long as it smells great to our own nose, it is more than ok to wear it :) I think both Alexis and Crystal Carrington would be proud ;)

Super Dacob You are very right! I should have touched on the non-gendered nature of perfumes in my message - Coco is such a wonderful starting point to that conversation because it was created in a moment in history when feminists' outlook was to, well, beat men at their own game. Coco is such as "two way street" starting point because it combined the voluptuousness of women's perfumes of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and the spiciness of men's cologne from the same era, and it said to women: "It's time for us to beat men at their own game!" So while contextually Coco is meant to be the perfume equivalent of shoulder pads and menswear for women, of course the reality is that it marries elements of what were, at that point, traditionally feminine and traditionally masculine, and creates something in between. Not that any perfume is truly feminine or masculine, of course, because a) scents are scents, and if it smells good on you, it smells good on you! and b) we make associations with certain scents that are constantly shifting, just like with fashion! But of course, you are right: Coco Chanel was such a forward thinker, and she would have led the movement toward shifting gendered association for fashion, beauty, scents, etc, much earlier. She played and she plotted and she produced the best because she understood gender norms of her time and she turned them on their head. The biggest stop to this revolution was the uber-divided gender norms of the 50s that were a response to the blurred gender *roles* during the world wars. Finally in the 80s, society was ready to understand her attitude toward gender norms, and play with it. I think Coco is supposed to be a little bit fun that way!

The second world war truly messed with our notions of gender roles and we are still not done recovering from those fossilized norms but progress is being made for sure and I find it fascinating how incredible it is to often have to dig in the past to find freedom and keys to free ourselves from the chains we are forced into today! ;) xoxo

OMG Compliments,compliments,compliments!!I have the edt bought in 2008(batch7402)100ml,edp(batch5301) 50ml,&theBody Cream from 2013(batch5822)150g.The edt is much more spicy than the edp.The newer edp is NOT the same as the bottles from the 80's&90's-not as strong,The Body cream is quite strong but I still prefer the body lotion from the 90's-it was absolutely perfect.I carried it in my work bag& got more compliments on that than the edp!!!!You are so right to use the word"oppulence".A man commented to me that I smelled "RICH"-haha!He said you just smell like you have tons of money-too funny!I wish! Nevertheless,this is definitely a child of the opulent 80's&fit perfectly into the early Roaring 90's.So many parties so much heavy jewelry,everyone still smoking with abandon,total drama everywhere.Nothing like the soapy,aquatic,dull world that followed-IMHO :)

The intense perfumes from the 80s/90s mixed with cigarettes... t'was a drammatic time to say the least and oppulence was the "word du jour" ;) Ahhh!!!! Wish our times today were like that! In a way, since its forbidden to smake almost everywhere today, the perfumes don't need to be so strong since they have no intense competitor: the smell of smoke/tabacco in the crowded rooms... ;) xoxo

I’ve been wearing Coco EDP since December. My first love is Chanel #5, and now I’m in love with Coco. I spray no more than 2 or 3 sprays . Why is it that I can’t smell it on myself except after I sprayed. But hours later my husband can walk into the room where I am and smell Coco. And when I’ve been outside shopping, people have complimented me and still smell Coco.

FAVE FAVE FAVE Chanel fragrance! Thank you for doing this review; I loved watched your take on this classic. Most Chanel perfumes have excellent lasting abilities but this one barely comes out in the wash! haha

I am loving your perfume reviews and this one was as fantastic as the others! Your positive energy, obvious love of fragrance, imagination, knowledge, and sensitivity is amazing. Now I must tell you, I have the opposite opinion of yours, i.e., I do not care for the EDT and EDP of Coco (based on what they've smelled like on others...I haven't tried them on my skin) but I adore the parfum. On me, the parfum is quietly elegant (vs LOUD when smelled on others) and richly exciting in the baroque/rococo sense you described in your video. Such glorious opulence that I love on cold nights, when relaxing at home (dare I wear it out?). However, based on your review, I will sample the other concentrations. I really like this review. I am a Chanel parfum collector and recall smelling Coco a long time ago. I distinctly remember notes of vanilla mixed with spice and I loved it! Just ordered it and am so excited for this fragrance to arrive. It's definitely different than other Chanel parfums, this is definitely a standout and will get you noticed. I love how you described perfume as a protection and a way to attract the right people to you. Yes, in a way, it is polarizing, but that's okay. I love it, and its scent will attract those who love it, too. With similar tastes.

Coco has been my ONLY scent for my entire adult life. I started wearing it in the mid eighties when it was still fairly new and my family has always said it’s my scent. I wear the Parfume all year long. I make sure to be very careful to reduce the amount I apply in warmer weather ( you can even skip a day in the summer). It is MY scent. I love it and just as important, my partner of 40 years loves it as much as I do. A powerful yet deeply, mysteriously, richly, wonderfully, yes, Baroque fragrance. Please never discontinue it. p.s. I desperately miss the dry oil.

Dacob, I wanted to follow up on Coco. I believe the parfum version to be the softest, least sharp of the three versions. This is the reason I feel I can wear this fragrance, and why I was so surprised to read that you think it's too strong for you. My supposition has been that when I've smelled Coco on others, it was the EDT or the EDP (based on my Mom's sillage when she wears her EDP) and that they might have "over-applied". So, this Thanksgiving weekend, I am going to Sephora or wherever I can find the EDT and the EDP, to test them. I will test small doses and see how they compare to my beloved parfum😃.

O Coco, I remember being so young and sneaking into my parents bedroom drawers while they were outside, all purely out of my early love of mischief-based discovery... it just always yielded the most interesting kinds of adventures for me at 6 or 7 years old! And then I remember encountering Coco in her purest parfum from 1980something. The scent was not truly the scent of my mother as it was just the scent of her stocking drawer. But it struck me all the same! And while it was definitely fierce and commanding as a bee-sting... it is still somehow so playful! Coco is very much her own entity in all the vastness of the world's nonsense. Coco intoxicates and sits on your shoulder like a cloud of odd confidence, like you could take on anything no matter the impossibilities of success. Coco is my darling little spitfire key to everyday life. And while her complications make her seem expensive and pretty untouchable, she's a magnet in spite of it all! To me, Coco is the magic that can lead you down a path where all of your deepest, most human desires are realized and given a name. All of this is why Coco is my secret signature. I layer a touch of the pure parfum under my Coco EDP and I wear her anywhere that she could be discovered by the most curious. I will always be in love with the Coco

Coco chanel simply beautiful and sophisticated

Get the old version of the bath gel if you can. So, so, so divine!!! You'll be enveloped in such luxuriating scent for hours. I also use to have the after bath pressed powder. OMG....words could not descrive how lovely it was. It took my mum many years to finish it. I think she used it very sparingly because it was that great.

I LOVE Coco. My all time favourite perfume. I've tried to get a new signature scent but I cannot find any perfume I like better than Coco. Just a question, what exactly do you mean by "baroque" perfume?

I tried it again the other day at the airport... pure parfum... the tester was a spray so I had A LOT on my skin.. its like an oil almost... and the opening was too strong for me and formless since it had an intense bite in my nose but the drydown, which came three hours laterrr!!!!, was HEAVEN ON EARTH!!! :) So I am looking to purchase one perhaps if I can hunt it down in 15ml... since CHANEL has discontinued it in 15ml in most countries of the world... xoxo

I've worn the EDP last two years for the first time and I love it, maybe it's because I love the smell of spices. it doesn't seem that potent to me its just right and I don't know how it compares to the eighties version, it must have been a beautiful bomb lol and I don't know how many times it been reformulated but based on reviews alot of the fans of this fragrance say its not like it used to be. I like alot especially in cool, cold weather very warming. will have to try the next to compare. love your reviews xx

My favorite fragrance for last 27 years-Coco EDT... the man I was in love with back in 1995 gave it to me, I still have 1/3 of the 100 ml bottle. Its amazing, almost unreal smell chained me forever to COCO...

If you find the pure PARFUM, I recommend to get that one! Otherwise try them both.. on eon one arm and the other on eon the other ar, and wait 40 minutes... after 40 minutes smell your arm and see which one smells better on your skin ;) xoxo

Dacob. I finally purchased Chanel nº5 EDP after watching your videos and fell in love and then bought the pure perfum. The EDP doesn’t not last on my skin at all I was so upset. BUT I did notice. I don’t know if you noticed. All of Chanel’s Fragrances the EDT formulation ingredient list goes ( Alcohol , Aqua , parfum) and the EDP ingredients in order list ( Alcohol, perfume , Aqua ) like coco. Coco noir. Coco mad, coco mad intense. but no 5 the EDP and EDT both list ingredients in order (Alcohol, Aqua, Parfume)

N5 doesnt last on my skin either. Nor on my cloths… any tips to make it last longer?

To me Coco is absolutely contemporary. Absolutely CHANEL, father of all COCO variations and CHANCE range as well. Absolutely gorgeous, rich, ambery, spicy, I love it

hello Dacob, there was something I wanted to tell you for a long long time.....since you have many books about Chanel, you might already know what I m about to say. 20 years ago, I spoke to someone who used to work at Chanel headquater who told me about a certain Chanel n°7 which became "coco".....I didn't believe it until a old oncle of mine told me about n°7 ....sold a long time ago as n°7...way b4 "coco"...whether or not, if its true that make me think that n°7 was some of the sample given to Coco by Ernest Beaux !!! funny enough, my nose always told me that "coco" was too sophisticated to be a J.Polge composition....! I might be completely wrong...but i really wanted to share it with you !!!

There have been many CHANEL "numbered§ fragrances during her life. Some were said to only have been made for her and only used by her or close friends she gifted the scents to. COCO was released more than a decade after Chanel's demise. Why would Jacques hold back the release for such a long time had the fragrance already been created in the thirties by Beaux? Coco does not smell at all like a perfume from the thirties era... It smells very sophisticated 80's with a hint of 70's OPIUM as inspiration... Everything is possible of course and there might have been a n°7 used as inspiration for COCO... BOIS NOIR was the predeccessor of EGOISTE after all but both were composed by Polge. SYCOMORE was available in the fourties and is now back as a totally different smelling scent... There is much mystery inside CHANEL and we will never truly know all the secrets... but its fun to dig deeper! :) xoxo

I bought Coco in 1984, it was luscious... I bought the perfume and edp... I loved them... I felt wonderful wearing it... I always got beautiful compliments... I wore it and bought it until the last formulation... it simply isn’t the same fragrance anymore... it’s a pale shadow of what it was.... no depth, no lasting power... it was heartbreaking... I still have some edp, it has some age on it but still is so much more than the present bottles. I did buy the new formulation but returned it...sadly...

i've read that perfume goes bad or changes its sent after 2 or 3 years, do you know if that's true?

+fouyj refdbv perfumes do change and depending how you store them they can go bad. I protect my perfumes and I do not leave them in the sun or in hot spaces. I personally do not mind when I perfume becomes a bit seasoned. This way it smells more intense to my nose, but this is mostly the case with perfumes that contain more precious and mostly natural ingredients. Lets just say that CKone would not age well... xoxo

+kaztazable great question! They are slightly different. In a way the edt is a bit blander than the edp but it is in my opinion in no way less precious or of lesser quality. The edt and the edp should be used in different occasions. one is more for day use and the other more for evening use.

Trust me , I'm fan of overpowering perfumes Such as Angel , Amen , Tom ford - Black orchid .But my next question is Does Coco by Chanel has any slight /big common smell with Coco mademoiselle chanel ? or Shall I expect another whole perfume ?

To me its an all different perfume from coco mademoiselle. It literally smells like the eghties, while mademoiselle smells like the 2000s...

I don't have a big idea about in the eighties , I was born in 1992 XD ( well that's a joke ) but trust me , I stll don't have idea how eighties perfumes smells like lol . I'll give it a sniff next time , I hope I won't turn my closet into CHANEL boutique . Cuz I already bought Thierry mugler perfume collection and then I watched some of your reviews and I'm turning my sight into CHANEL !! Do you I see I'm capitalizing it . Unfortunately reformulated... but if you manage to get your hands on a pre-reformulated bottle, please do try it... its a time capsule... sending you on a magic trip through time and space! The first eighties Dior POISON has that effect on me! xoxo

I smell honey, apricots,peach and bergamot at the first spray then the sandalwood comes out through out the day. However its a grown up from fragrance which I prefer. I like all the Chanel fragrances they all say class.

I tried Coco today I loved it but I feel like I’m not ready for it yet I feel like it’s way too mature and grown for me at the moment I think I’ll wait until I’m abit more mature to try it again but I loved it smells very classy and rich ✨ I guess I’ll try coco mademoiselle and miss Dior for now

You can wear the EDT or EDP or parfum in the morning, day or evening or night. Depends on your chemistry and the temperature outside as well as the humidity.

Wearing my Coco today. Two sprays of this beauty. I prefer EdT as it hits me with "fraicheur"

I just get a bottle of the eau of parfum and I can see in the label says PARIS and down NEW YORK I buy it from eBay because the label is different I he's is pretty old formulation and this bottle really remain my more the Opium that I smelled as a teenager at list in my skin than the Coco that I remember. I really appreciate your videos I'm stard to buying those old perfums that I just to love.

I purchased the EDP ( French Version ) this week..LOVING IT. It has the sophistication I was looking for in a male fragrance but could not find. Eventually I will by the parfum version. Can you tell me what the difference is between the parfum and EDP minus the concentration ? Goes very well with a crisp dress shirts and slacks. The EDT was too thin for me. I prefer heavier fragrances.

+Christopher XXX the parfum is more aldehyde-y it carries also more bitter acid notes to my nose which is why I cannot stand it but thats just me. On me the best concentration is the edt... it develops so nicely on my skin... very natural warm... emanating warmth for hours. The edp turns a bit acidic on my skin but still very nice.. and the parfum just goes all acid on me... like pee or something similar... I cannot tell you though what it is that makes it go acid on me... all I know is that I do not like the acid.Othe rthan that the parfum is beautiful!.

I purchased the most recent formulation EDP and it smelled of spiced clove-ish sexy however incredibly subdued spicy water........ Weakest perfume i have EVER experienced. Ive had $5 perfumes that projected more and lasted longer. I returned it IMMEDIATELY. I ended up purchasing narciso rodriguez's new scent narciso in the white bottle, which gave me the similar sexy mysterious and intoxicating vibe that i wanted from coco. L'agent by agent provocateur gives me the same feeling as well. You should totally check them out.

+Ellizzie My CHANEL SA said they still use gold in the mix for the plating but that the gold is lighter and they prefer to go for a more faded look... Of course we could believe that the reason behind it is to save money but then again... the lighter gold tones are omnipresent throughout entire CHANEL collections as of late. After all is said and done, I miss the chunky bold CHANEL pieces from the late eighties and early nineties! That was CHANEL's (post Coco) golden era!

from the regular CHANEL releases my top would be on first place N°5 PARFUM, second place CHANEL N°5 EDT and third place CHANCE EAU VIVE

What are some similar fragrances to this beauty? I have a birthday coming And no one wants to buy me perfume because they know this is my number one. I've worn since my 20's. I adore, adore this perfume! I agree it's like a drug , I felt like a rich bitch when I wear it and gives me confidence.

+Lisa Fox Hi Lisa. The pure parfum is too intense for my nose. It has a sort of headache-y touch to it. It doesn'T sooth me but rather attacks me so I can never use it.

To me, the parfum is less layers then the EDP. EDP is the most complex composition

I use the tab from the stopper. Or I also place my wrist on the bottle opening and flip the bottle quickly and then back upright again. Then I would wipe off the border of the opening with my finger.

you need to brake the wax chanel seal, detach the skin/plastik around it and then lift the stopper off...

I need a new bottle of Coco Chanel. I’m out !!

Definitely not as powerful now. smells like a different perfume.

Months ago I used, of all things, a body wash from Old Spice in the "classic/original" scent. And believe it or not, it truly hearkened Coco for me. If it had a touch more vanilla or rose I think (some point of sweetness), it could have been a dead ringer for Coco. Furthermore, if they had re-sold that body wash as a fragrance, it would bring back Old Spice out of the "dude" image it's associated with now. It would easily be a luxury fragrance, if you will. I either need to get my hands on that body wash this winter, or lust after Coco until the day we can meet and actually be together. LOL.

Get the old version of the bath gel if you can. So, so, so divine!!! You'll be enveloped in such luxuriating scent for hours. I also use to have the after bath pressed powder. OMG....words could not descrive how lovely it was. It took my mum many years to finish it. I think she used it very sparingly because it was that great.
