Cockatiel Body Language & Behaviour | The Crest | TheParrotTeacher

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hi everyone, thanks for watching my video on the cockatiel crest and what it means in relation to cockatiel body language.
This video is intended as an overview as if I was to go into the technical side it would just be too long!
If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments as I’d love to chat to you.
All the clips feature our cockatiels Chip and Fish as I wanted to show you only behaviours I'm witnessing myself.

seems like the crest is used similarly to how a cat uses its ears and tails as an indicator of its feelings/reaction to its environment, in some ways im meeting my grandmas cockatiel today, so im watching a bunch of videos to try and learn how to appropriately communicate with him, and your videos have been a huge help, so thank you so much! i have a strong feeling I'll have to teach my grandma and mom about Appropriate Petting, ahaha. the lil dudes apparently super cuddly, and i know my mom and i are cat people (and my grandma bred dachshunds for most of her life), so were gonna have to remember the reaction we'd normally default to isnt right for a bird

In some ways yes! The cockatiel crest is almost like a cheat sheet to their moods. Other parrots don't have them so you need to read body language in other ways. Awesome, I hope it went well meeting the little guy! Also cool avatar, I used to love splatoon!

Just got a cockatiel today. Once we picked him up (we called him cookie), he stepped up from breeder's hand onto mine straight away. Then they put him onto my chest and it stayed there. The man was like yeah nah I could give you the box but you'll be alright holding him. For the most of the trip he was on my chest while I was giving him scritches. He didn't resist (until he got bored and wanted to get up the window which i let him do), he pecked me a little bit (did not hurt at all, he wasn't trying to hurt me) whenever I stopped. As i was scratching him he had his crest all the way down, but he was not trying to get away and just kept closing his eyes in relaxing way etc. Does it mean it was focused on getting scratches or what?:D I can say this is a first birb I got knowing that they are not toys xDD Though I keep reading about behaviours and stuff I still worry since I want to make him a happy birb. I know it is gonna take a while for him to get used to us, he is a good boi xDD The whole day ha preens his feathers, eats and sleeps xDD He is also fluffed up almost all of the time and stands on one leg even when he is not sleeping. And he watches me ALL the time x) Should I be worried or this is alright? As I said this is my first one and I feel like it is better to actually ask someone because the info from internet is a bit limited for me. Do you have any suggestions?

He chirped a couple of times and yeah, he eats and relaxes really a lot. He moves around the cage a little bit only, mostly when we are not in the room and then he is like "Wha? What you want from me?" But he still moves around sometimes in my presence. Sometimes he is alright with me passing his cage, sometimes he moves away. He is just 8 weeks old :D

Hey Valery, So he's a very young little man and likely only just weened. If he is acting normally, eating, drinking, preening etc then you don't have too much to worry about. The little guy is probably a bit confused and nervous of his new surroundings. I think many of the questions you've asked will be answered by taking a peek at a few of my other videos! But my advice would be to let him settle in, watch him carefully and interact with him on his terms. IE. don't push interactions and let him decide the pace!

Hey there, Is your cockatiel a Lutino? As that's a common problem with them. I'd check for any irritation on the skin (for example redness) and also see if he isn't scratching it lots. If you're concerned I'd visit an avian vet.

Hey Bella, Does she have any other cockatiels around? If she was in an aviary its possible she is screaming for other birds! It's also possible she needs more stimulation from toys, from being out/about and flying etc Another possibility is her diet. What is she eating? If it's all high fat seed it could be contributing to screaming!

@@bellahonner7082 Hey Bella, So at a first glance her diet isn't bad but it may have lots of sugar in it. Some pellets are high in sugar, wheat and salt so it depends on what kinds of pellet she is getting. We usually use TOPPS and Harrisons as they have the best ingredients! Also fruit every day may not be the best, again due to the sugar issue! Ideally, you'll want to be giving around 10-20% seed, 20% pellets and the rest vegetables, a little fruit, herbs, sprouts etc! It sounds like she has plenty of toys and it's great she is out lots too! It might be worth you watching my Beginner Cockatiel Care guide! Also my partner Sophie's channel has loads of good videos on diet/toys!

Hi I'm having a extremely hard time taming my cockatiel, he is always terrified, he doesn't want to fly, he is just standing on his ladder looking at himself in a mirror, he is afraid of sticks and a clicker, turning lights on and off, hand is like a gun pointing at him, and I have him for two months for now, I can lure hum with food to come up to me and even step up on my hand but as soon as I move food away he would just go back or even try to bite the hand, he is aggressively hissing when hand is near cage not in it. He doesn't know how to leave the cage, neither to go back in it. I live in a family of 4 people and he only step up on my hand and he is trying to sing but it sounds like he is learning it, btw I got him from a pet store, even my mother can't reach out to him, she has 14 years of experience with cockatiels and we are desperate we need help.

Hey Nikola, So it sounds like a difficult situation. You can still target train without a clicker and use smaller sticks. However as you have had some success bonding with him you should continue with just positive reinforcement training. You could also try having him step up onto a short perch if hands are an issue. It also sounds like he needs lots of de sensitisation work with hands around the cage. I have a video on bonding that may be worth watching. Ultimately my tips are : Continue working on bonding and de sense Try target training again Have him step up onto a perch if hands are an issue Remove the mirror as it encourages hormones and aggression If you are really struggling me and my partner run a consultancy related to bird behaviour called best behaved birds (link in description)

@@TheParrotTeacher Thank you so much for giving me this beautiful advice, I can’t explain to my parents not to bother him, I stopped using clicker a month ago, I clicked few times and it was like nope this is not going to work for us, he is so calm when I’m alone with him, when no one is at home, when I speak to him he would reply back with gentle voice, and when we all are at home he is screaming at me, even my mom tried to talk like me to him when she was alone and he is acting like deamon. I’m changing my taming routine. I had two buggies when I was a kid and they lived a long happy life, this is mine 3rd parrot and the hardest one, but I’m loving him even though he is like this.
