COBRA can be extremely cost prohibitive. There are definitely better (less expensive) options out there. However, some people would rather pay more for a short period of time to keep their same coverage. It's really meant as a stop gap.

Hi Carlos, glad to be of help! Just to clarify the price: there is no set price for COBRA because it depends how much your plan actually costs. Yes! You can actually get nationwide PPO coverage with a short term health plan. COBRA is very expensive and although it might be an ok short term solution, you would probably be better served with an ACA plan or a short term medical plan. If you left your job, you should qualify for a special enrollment period with ACA plans. Moving will also trigger a special enrollment period if you'd rather a marketplace plan than STM. Hello, my contract ends in July. I was told the July's paycheck would cover my insurance for the whole month of August and is said to expire on September 1st. When should I expect a letter (or some sort of notification about enrolling in COBRA) from my employer? Is this something that I have to actively seek myself instead of waiting for a letter from the employer? I called HR and they said I have to wait until my contract ends, but I was left confused. Also, how long does it take for Cobra's coverage to be in effect? I'm worried that on September 1st, I will have a gap in my insurance for whatever reason. Please help!

  • @iHealthBrokers

If your position is terminated in July, your insurance should carry through the end of July. HR has 14 days to contact you from the date of termination (although feel free to be proactive!). If you elect to enroll, coverage begins the first of the next month. COBRA is retroactive though, so do not worry about a gap in coverage! As long as you enroll within 60 days, you should not have a gap in your insurance.

You mentioned that I would have 60 days to take Cobra, so if I am able manage 1 month without insurance , I won’t need to take cobra. But on the hindsight if I need it, would it not be issue, as I would be enrolling for insurance after the medical incident

You have 60 days to sign up for COBRA but the payments AND coverage are retroactive. That basically gives you a two month grace period. However, double check the date your insurance with your new job will become active. Very often there's some type of probationary period before new employees become eligible. Congratulations on your new job!

Not necessarily, but the question is: why? Under ordinary circumstances, you only have a period of 60 days to sign up for COBRA. By the time you've enrolled and disenrolled in a marketplace plan, it hardly seems worth it. Also, you'd be charged retroactively for COBRA so you'd end up paying for two health insurance premiums during the overlap.

Did you by any chance mean Medicare (not Medicaid)? You should be eligible for Medicare when you turn 65. And yes, many do choose to supplement their Medicare with a Medigap Plan (and possibly Part D as well). We've got plenty of videos about Medicare, but you can also contact us at 888-410-0344 if you have any questions. Medicaid eligibility is not determined by your age, but rather your income. So, if your income falls below a certain level, it doesn't matter what your age is. Medicaid eligibility is determined by the Federal Government AND your State. So, you'll need to contact your Medicaid Office for more info.

That's a really interesting question...You'd have to run the numbers. Do you foresee a lot of needed medical care? If so, you may want to stick with COBRA. True, your premium would be high, but if you've met your OOP Max and your needed services are covered and being provided by an in network physician, it may work in your favor. On the other hand, if you don't foresee a lot of needed medical care, you may be better served choosing a new plan with lower premiums.

@@scottdavidson7543 Your best bet until open enrollment starts on 11/01 is likely short term medical insurance. It wouldn't cover your hernia surgery because that's pre-existing, however, you could transition to an ACA plan that would during open enrollment. Please feel free to give us a call at 888-410-0344. We're happy to help.

Hi Timothy. Your previous employer has to provide with you a COBRA election notification. If they haven't done so yet, contact their HR department. Best of luck!

Can I get just dental and vision through cobra ?

  • @iHealthBrokers

    @iHealthBrokers

    Жыл бұрын

COBRA is basically just a way to extend and pay for the insurance offered by your employer. So, if your employer offered dental and vision, you should be able to continue it and pay for it under COBRA. Thanks for your question!

Hi Cassie, yes you can. However, private dental insurance is actually MUCH less expensive than people think. You may be able to get a better plan than what your employer had offered for about the same price. You can learn more about our clients' favorite dental plan here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/loKArc9qXa-1cbg.html Also, feel free to call us at 888-410-0344 with any questions. There's no charge for our services and we're happy to help point you in the right direction. Thanks for your question!

Hi Faith. With COBRA, you are responsible for the entirety of the monthly payments. There are still a few weeks left of open enrollment for Marketplace Insurance. Many people are able to get very inexpensive plans this year under the American Rescue Plan Act. You may want to take a look. They will certainly be more affordable than COBRA. Best of luck!

We get asked that a LOT! Basically, whether you work with the company directly (calling the carrier), use healthcare.gov, or work with a broker (like us) there is already a commission included in your monthly premium. The monthly premium is exactly the same whether you use healthcare.gov, call the carrier, or work with a broker. Now some brokers DO charge an additional fee, but we don't. We work solely off the commission paid by the policy, not the beneficiary. Many people don't know that they can use a broker at no charge!

Yes, unfortunately COBRA can be far too expensive for many. However, under the ARPA, currently many are eligible for 100% subsidized COBRA. You can check out our video to learn more: kzread.info/dash/bejne/da6rwbiTosWsZc4.html

Can COBRA cover just my spouse? I was the primary holder and had her as a dependent when I was with the company. I had 2 jobs and keeping an insurance but the job I quit had better fertility benefits so I wanted to keep my wife on it.

Hi Joe, that's actually the first time we've encountered this question. When someone transfers to Medicare, their spouse and dependents can keep their COBRA coverage. Obviously, this isn't exactly the same thing, but perhaps it is possible. Have you spoken with your company's HR department?

Unfortunately COBRA is often VERY expensive. However, under certain circumstances it may be worth it. Perhaps you're finishing treatment with a specialist who only takes limited plans. Usually, it will be a better financial choice to pursue another option.
