A good sounding radio with low power is worth a lot more than a radio that sounds crap and lots of power. More power, about 30 yards further down the road. 😂

I disagree what by doing a tune per the service manual. I spend half my time fixing so called tunes where they cut diodes or transistors out and then turn every tuning pot in the radio which then takes me hours to realign this was nothing of the sort I just aligned everything to get peak performance.

I made it to 3 minutes 50 seconds and stopped watching there. As long as you are working on only your own radios then no harm no foul, but you should know that you messed that radio up with the very first tuning coil you chose to turn. You said you were using the service manual, but if that's true then you don't know how to interpret what you are reading. that first tuning coil you went for is the 54mhz harmonic suppression coil and you tried to tune it using a wattmeter and oscilloscope. that adjustment can ONLY be made using a spectrum analyzer and is adjusted for MINIMUM output at 54mhz. Right now you have no idea what you did to it, but i can guarantee you that it should have been left alone. you most likely increased the output on 54mhz which reduces the output on 27mhz. also you said that you turn the mic gain down and tune like that. that is fine until you get to the modulated stages of the radio, and then you HAVE to tune using a modulated tone in order to set it correctly. you just tuned yours for max deadkey meaning that you lowered the headroom available for modulation. my post is not mean to be insulting, only to point out that you put out a video that could really mislead someone who doesn't know any better and trusts your knowledge. im happy to help if you'd like to learn more about how this type of thing is supposed to be done.

Rather, it serves as a slimmed down demonstration of some of my fine-tuning process as you know there is lot more to it. I make an effort to keep things accessible by avoiding overly technical jargon and try to keep the video somewhat short, as my goal isn't to be a teacher, but rather to provide a little reference for those who might not be well-versed in the intricate electronic terminology. Your observation regarding L38 is astute and entirely accurate. For this specific tuning coil, the optimal adjustment involves tuning it to the lowest signal at 54MHz, focusing on the 2nd harmonic. Upon revisiting the schematic, I must sincerely acknowledge your correctness. Despite my extensive 40+ years of experience, a multitude of satisfied customers, and numerous successful repairs, I'm humble enough to admit when I've made a mistake. Even with my wealth of experience, I don't profess to be an absolute expert, as I genuinely believe that we all continue to learn something new each day, and making errors is a natural part of the learning process. In all honesty, I was initially a tad perturbed when I read your response. Yet, upon reevaluating my video, it became apparent that your observation was indeed spot-on. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, and I mistakenly identified L38 as L36. Perfection eludes us all, and fortunately, the radio in question is the one I use in my truck. I plan to remove it tomorrow and execute the proper re-tuning on that coil. While it hasn't noticeably impacted performance, it's now a minor annoyance that is going to bug me that I need to rectify. Perhaps it's high time for me to consider investing in a magnifying glass. Also as far as the modulation if you watch further in the video, I tune the modulation using a modulated tone personally I always start with carrier power then go to modulation that is just the order I like to use to set it correctly as it has always worked well for me that way. 73's!

@@TheElectronMan thanks for the reply! I definitely wasn't just trying to 'start !@$#, and am glad you noticed that. I'll admit that ive turned that same adjustment before not realizing i was on the TV trap. Thanks for posting CB videos as the world needs as many as we can get!

Thank you for the feedback and the sharp eye. BTW I went back and readjusted that coil, it really didn't make much of a difference as I was only like a 1/4 turn off but it would have bugged me just knowing it LOL.Live and learn right :) .@@LCRRRRR
