I loved the How I Met Your Mother episode in which Barney goes nuts trying to find out who "P.S. I love you" is about and all these awesome Canadian celebrities pop up during the episode: Dave Coulier, Paul Shaffer, Allan Thicke, Geddy Lee. One of my favorite episodes!

People in urban areas in Canada really don't have accents. we just have the generic north american accent. this 'oot' instead of 'out' stuff is really only from people who live in small towns in northern ontario and the parries. I've only ever heard a few people speak like this, and i live in southern ontario.

12345drizzy Francophones in Quebec and New Brunswick have some hefty accents, so do Newfies of course, and there's a general accent you hear a lot in Atlantic Canada. In Alberta and BC it's a lot more of a generic accent like you said.

Maria A. only Canadians who live in the northern ontario and some less populated where only white people live. that's where they say "oot" and eh a lot. But if you live in Toronto, Vancouver or the other more populated areas you wouldn't hear anyone say that because of the american influence that these cities have. I live in Toronto and oh man we have adopted a lot of american culture and their accent and language no one uses u in colour or favourite anymore.

Maria A. We do. It's hard to hear and it's not nearly as exaggerated as our American neighbours make it sound but it's there. It took me a while to finally hear it. I think the only reason I do is because I have a lot of family and friends in the US so I've spent some extended time down there over the years. Generally, Americans will say "about" like you'd say "owl"... where O's have a harsher A-type sound... "uh-bah-oot". Canadian pronounciation is tougher to find an analogy for but I'd say it sounds like "uh-buh-oot".

I'm an English person, have lived in Toronto for 8 years and Halifax before that for 2 years. I DO notice varying degrees of regional accent, in rural areas mostly and have noticed a few 'oots' being uttered here and there. I don't notice a distinct Toronto accent, however when we cross the border and I hear Americans (I'm talking Buffalo area) I do realise there are differences in the accents. I can't always put my finger on it though. :)

I wonder if Americans know that the funny sounding Canadian accent they think of is from a single province called Newfoundland.

garfoonga1 I'm going to go ahead and assume you're not from Newfoundland. I've lived here for the last 20+ years and have never heard "aboot" or anything of the sort.

Daniel Martin Never lived there, been there a few times. Have some family from there. Neither have I ever heard aboot ever anywherein Canada. But Newfies are the holders of the goofs accent that people think all Canadians have. You can thank Bob and Doug for that.

garfoonga1 Oh the ignorance...lol, I'm from Montreal by the way. Just Google "Canadians accents by Tremain McNeil" and anything under "Canadian raising". There you'll see how wrong you are and HOPEFULLY learn something at the same time. And Bob and Doug were not mocking the Newfoundland accent. That makes no sense. Why would they make a sketch clearly emulating Canada as a whole, but only using an accent found in one part of the country? Wouldn't they make it clear early on that the sketch would be about Newfoundland? Lol, the insecurity is strong with this one..

garfoonga1 I like how you're just gonna ignore 80% of my comment lol. I actually know Newfoundland accents, so if you think Bob and Doug is similar to or the same as the Newfoundland accents then I know you're just being insecure. Atlantic Canadian accents are way different then common Canadian accents. I suggest you look up what I sent you..

I don't know where in Vancouver she grew up, but I've never heard anyone here say "Oot". The West coast tends to elongate their "a" vowels, not the "o". But the stereotypical "Canadian accent" is actually an East coast accent. Honestly, those of us on the Lower Mainland of BC don't sound much different from people in Seattle.

i found out David Foster is Canadian because of how he pronounced about. i also follow a Canadian youtube channel from Toronto and they pronounce out differently too. *but* it's not as obvious as Cobie made it sound. in general you can't really tell the difference between American and Canadian accent until a word containing _out_ is used. there is a slight difference with their pronunciation/accent.

To all the people saying people from Vancouver don't have an accent or a distinct speech pattern, they most certainly do. It's just more subtle than that of Canadians from further east. I know this because I live in Bellingham, WA, where the hordes of the cheapest, least considerate people from the Vancouver area come to stock up on less expensive American milk and gas. In a town like this, you eventually start to pick up on some of the differences between American and Canadian speech, even if they're very slight.
