Cobbler Union | Shoe Shine & Initial Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, we polish 2 pairs of Cobbler Union shoes brought into our shop by a customer. Cobbler Union is a brand we have been recommending for quite some time now. We share our initial thoughts on this brand, while at the same time, providing a nice shine to both of these pairs of shoes.

    At 9:06, by "patina-work" do you actually mean the owner has put in a lot of time ax-kicking cinder-blocks and round-housing entire pineapples? Because that's definitely what it looks like.

  • @LoudCitizen

    Yes to the ax-kicking, no to the round-housing. Save the pineapples for a delicious upside down cake.

    Good video, guys! One observation, I own a pair of CU, great shoes. When I bought mine they came with a note from the manufacturer that specifically said not to use Renovatour on them as they could affect the patina. Mine are burgundy , darker than the ones you showed in the video. Best..

    When you visit Cobbler Union it may be worthwhile to inquire if they'd donate a pair of shoes to your charity project with Preston of the Elegant Oxford. You could do a tear down and upgrade with custom heel/toe taps. Also, when I checked their site this week I saw that they've partnered with a financing agent where you can buy a pair of shoes on three installments of $135. This definitely opens up options for people on a budget.

    You reference the 'patina' on the shoes. I just got a pair of these Cobbler Union chelsea boots in brown museum calf and wholecuts in burgundy museum calf. Killer shoes! It is a museum leather- leather that is pre-treated to give it a marbled effect and it is done to the entire hide, when it is dyed. Patina is something done to the shoe after it is manufactured, like painting it.

    I recently bought a nice pair of cap toe Oxfords there. The calve's leather is as good as you're going to find, and they use at least 3 lasts. 2 different rubber soles if you prefer those (Goodyear welted 360 with those). I'm fortunate to live only about a mile from PCM where their headquarters store is. Buying was a really good experience.

    This is a brand that I would love to try. Unfortunately the brand is widthist. I would love to know your take on saddle soap. Some say never use this product, yet many pros are using it. So how much is too much with regard to Saddle Soap?

  • @TrentonHeath

    @TrentonHeath

    4 жыл бұрын

    Phil Schiavone Saddle soap definitely isn’t bad for the shoe; however, it’s one of those things where you need to make sure to condition them after use. Some saddle soaps are stronger than others, and it’s important to make sure the shoes are conditioned afterwards. We don’t use saddle soap for every shoe shine. I tend to use it only when the shoes have build up or dirt that needs to be cleaned.

    Full welts add girth to the shoe, especially the waist and heel. You will find that most higher the shoes ($1k and up) are really more looks-driven, and will opt for a more streamlined look around the waist and the back of the heel, hence, the partial welt. Personally I prefer the stable feel of a 360 degree welt over the more elegant silhouette, but I see why others would disagree.

    Terrible experience with Cobbler Union. I bought a pair of oxfords and they were about a half size too small. Wore them in my living room for about five minutes, put them back in the box and sent them back for an exchange. The couple minutes I wore them in the house put some light creases in the vamp; I got an email back that this constituted them being “damaged” and ineligible for an exchange. A couple takeaways: first, simply trying on the shoes will crease the leather and make them ineligible for an exchange or return. Second, you’re taking a big risk buying from this company without tryin on the shoes in store.
