Thank you for this video! I have been abstaining from any cobalt pigments due to the unethical cobalt mining in congo! I got the cotman cobalt hue and it blends beautifully!❤

I've made my own PB72 Cobalt Blue from Jackson's pigment, because I find their tube paints a bit too sticky. I make my own gum arabic binder, I like my paints to set in the pan. It's a beautiful colour, and granulates perfectly

Cobalt Blue has become a mainstay of my favourite blues. I have Daniel Smith and Rembrandt versions. I often mix it with Ultramarine Blue and/or Manganese Blue Hue to get more varied blue skies for Mediterranean seascapes that I like to paint. I recently bought a Rembrandt Cerulean Blue Greenish, which I haven't tried yet, but the swatch looks promising.

Great comparison - thanks so much! It so happens I bought some Cobalt blue yesterday (D. Smith). I wish I had seen this before as I would have loved to try the Jackson brand too - there's always next time! I suppose there are times one would want more granulation and then times for less granulation - so good to know about all options. Thanks again!

In Australia Jackson colbalt is $15 for 10ml Daniel smith is $34 for 15ml and winsor and Newton is $50 for 14ml …..it all depends were you live in the world ….lol and Jackson’s is not aloud to send sell w&n paint to Australia….its a funny world we live is….

Jackson’s is now selling Winsor and Newton in Australia. However, it is not as cheap as it used to be when we could order it from the Jackson’s UK website.

Surprised to see that my artist grade Holbein Cobalt blue is W291 which is a CB Hue.

That is a Holbein reference number. The pigment is pb28,,,, at least on my tube. Holbein doesn't make it easy to find. It's right under the bar code, in tiny letters

Thank you for this series. I have Daniel Smith paints, but I also agree that Jackson's seem to have the edge. Having recently got into watercolour, I am curious as to how some of these colours get their names. Like 'Quinacridone', and why some paints have the prefix 'permanent'? I presumed most paints would be fairly permanent!! 🤔

From your swatches. I would pick the same order. I have yet to use Jackson’s. However this might be an alternative. I have enjoyed using the Windsor Newton’s over the Daniel Smiths brand. I enjoyed the Cotman brands as well, there is place for them in my tool box as well

My pallet is primarily Daniel Smith with a few Windsor&Newton and I think I’ve figured out the cost difference. Daniel Smith is about 2/3 the price as W&N in America. So it makes sense that Daniel Smith is so expensive in the UK. Country of origin and import duties are pretty shocking based on my experience. Regardless, I still dream for more W&N.

Thanks! I think they do both; the PB 72 is their current one, but it used to be PB 28. They sell both as dry pigment

thanks Lois, good to know. Think I will order a tube of the PB72, don't think my current collection has any blues that use this pigment, plus the Jackson's one I have is nearly empty! Thanks for all your postings, they are much appreciated. I rate your work very highly and love your gentle, down-to-earth presentation style. My favourite videos to follow are the ones where you choose a limited palette and then divide a sheet up into lots of rectangles to do lots of mini-studies. They are great fun to do and make lovely greetings cards!@@LoisDavidsonArt
